That term “drone” is what destroyed my beloved RC hobby. Now all RC aircraft are considered “drones” and subject to government interference. I tried for years to reverse the use of this terminology by only using terms like “quad rotor” and “multi rotor” but unfortunately the other hobbyists went right along with the government instead of pushing back. Now I have multiple aircraft hanging on my wall that I used to fly weekly, but now are too big and too fast and are subject to government rules and regulations forcing licensing and gps locators. Can’t even fly smaller aircraft in a local park anymore without being harassed by someone looking for trouble.

My definition of a drone is something that can fly missions autonomously (i.e. it has a GPS), even them, i still call them quads, planes, etc., if it crashes or goes off in a random direction when you let go of the sticks, it's not a drone. Seriously, they keep showing DJI and then suddenly switch to a reaper? Those are two completely different aircraft! No quad can go full tilt for an hour but i can still believe a plane can do it. If it's a hybrid then quads are completely out of the question, the weight would be far too much. Man, i haven't really flown my planes since lockdown.

That is far from hobbyist level. There are few hobbyist drones that will go 100mph and maintain that for a long period of time. That's military technology. Normal LiPo batteries just don't have the energy density for that kind of operation. You would have to lug around a battery the size of car - and most of that energy would be just to carry the battery :D

Its more so to keep track of it to make sure it doesnt interfere with air traffic, it doesnt show up on radar and apparently already almost hit a helicopter. It might seem like a lot to waste but its a smaller price than the potential impact it could have if it were to cause a plane crash. Its also possible they were attempting to track or block the signal going toward it, i would imagine most larger city police departments have a system that is made by dji that allows them to identify and track or locate the drone pilot. I also imagine that they had such a hard time seeing it because i don't really think those camera systems they use are really the best at tracking things that are closer and in the air since the majority of the time they are looking at things on the ground.

It’s an FPV drone. You can get it commercially from example iflight. You may believe FPV drones only can go for about 3-5 minutes, but if it’s like a 10” (inch) or bigger you can apply a HUGE battery like 20k mah which makes it available to fly for incredibly long. Those FPV drones can also go at immense speeds.

I think the flaw in the debate is assuming it was a battery powered drone. I can think of ways a nitro or other fueled single engine could power a quad rotor drone. I am a fpv pilot, the flight time definitely says this drone is military. I have seen the Red Bull drone and what it took to make a fpv drone move at 200 mph. longest-flying commercially available quad is probably the DJI mini 3, at just over 50 minutes, but that has a top speed of 35mph, and at that speed you'll be lucky to get half an hour of flight... 100mph for an hour plus? I been into drones for over 4 years now. I am a 107 drone pilot. I know drones that can do that 100 miles plus on BYO drones, but like this video says, they can only fly for a very short period of time. I fly DJI and have the Avata OG and Avata 2 and if I kept flying them at top speeds my batteries would be drained probably in around 15 minutes. I can fly up to 65 miles per hour, but only in bursts. The DJI FPV can do close to 100mph and that battery would drain quickly at top speed which it too cannot hold the top rated speed! Seems this kind of drone would have to be ones of those drones at top speeds flies more like a plane style at top speeds and hold them. This maybe military, but I kind of doubt it. Like other drone pilots that want to be professionals many other pilots that do follow the laws and don't do anything that is stupid especially flying anywhere close to a manned aircraft which is a huge no, no! That action can land you with huge fines, jail time and even forbid you from legally flying a drone ever again by the FAA and law enforcement. This kind of junk frustrates the hell out of me, because I believe that many professional drone pilots do the best they can to follow the laws and when idiots that do this kind of junk it only makes it worse on us and we get laws past to make it even harder for all of us to be able to either have fun or do our jobs with our drones in peace. I truly believe that helping to educate the public and show the positivity that drones offer will make it better for everyone. Sorry for the long reply!

Not seeing anything to say it was a Multi-Rotor. Those speeds and manuverability, plus the range and the altitude, could easily be a TBS Caipirinha with an FPV system. The right TBS modules for Tx and Rx can get 25 mile range with ease, and electric wing models already have shown 50 mile ranges in Consumer level gear. However, given the point of origin of the flight is at a military base, it's likey a border patrol UAV that wasn't supposed to be seen by local law enforcement.

I got chased by a police heli during an event. I was 10km away in a crowd. I managed to outrun the heli, land and hide it seconds before the heli arrived on top of us. I was then just someone in the crowd. Fun times.

Could be a foreign military drone doing recon on the military base....? If the report is even 50% accurate, this seems like something outside a hobbyist's budget. Also, we don't know if this was a rotor or fixed wing platform. A fixed wing could have a much longer flying time and higher linear speeds than a rotary by far, with much less battery weight. Food for thought.

I have a problem with them saying it was going over 100 MPH and running circles around them but they were circling it which means it was much slower than 100 MPH, but then its a helicopter that can hover so if it was slower why were they continually circling? And then if they could not see it how were they circling and how could they only see the belly light? NOTHING in this story is adding up at all....

They weren't chasing anything. They just needed an excuse to take the helicopter for a joy ride.

You can have 2 (or more) controllers with people in different locations who take over control to cover a longer distance. I also wouldn't be surprised if the pilot was on top of that mountain because you can get massive range up there with little to no interference.

They don't really mention the size of the drone. It could be done with a fixed wing or a VTOL. Very expensive and highly specialised but not impossible.

I would consider not thinking of it as a drone with 4 props. And instead consider it having wings to hold a heavier payload/motor/generator/battery/jet engine.

My 13 inch prop quad can fly for 45 minutes going around 60 mph. Most distance it can go is 30 miles away with 1.3ghz video.

4:31 Very unlikely this is a quadcopter drone. Not even a very high tech tilt-rotor quadcopter could do this. It is most likely a fixed wing craft.

5:17 Davis Monthan AFB is a maintenance and storage depot for decommissioned aircraft. Literal thousands of acres of mothballed planes they scavenge for parts before scrapping them. Doubtful they would be testing anything unique there. A hobbyist flying something where they shouldn't in order to get cool shots, on the other hand...
