Sorry, but "Paula Blart" was more correct than you think. While the city can't regulate flying over something like a park (the FAA owns that) they can, and do regulate and can enforce where you takeoff and land. Nashville Metro Code: 13.24.400 - Aviation. "No person shall voluntarily bring, land or cause to descend or alight within or upon any park, any airplane, flying machine, balloon, parachute, or other apparatus for aviation. "Voluntarily," in this connection shall mean anything other than a forced landing. Any landing other than one caused by mechanical or structural failure of the aircraft or any of its parts shall be deemed to have been made voluntarily, and this shall include landings caused by error or oversight, negligence or failure to comply with FAA regulations or rulings. This section is to be construed in pari materia with Section 13.24.240 of this code. The drone on the roof is a 3D Robotics Solo with Master Airscrew props, a Gopro Hero 4, and a very hard to find 3DR gimbal. Worth retrieving. These drones have a huge following still and the replacement parts pool is shrinking rapidly. These were $2k drones, pre DJI Phantom era, heavily touted as the first "smart drone". They were way ahead of their time. Used 3DR Solos can be found for $300 without the gimbal all day long, but fetch a premium with the gimbal and Hero 4 Black, the only camera that works with it plug and play for full function. New Solos can only be acquired through the 3DR $20K enterprise package, last I heard. Mine weighs in at almost 4 lbs all up with gear and flies great. Fast, nimble, and built rock solid. Still my favorite drone to fly on jobs with my Typhoon H a close 2nd.

But thats cool, i wonder if they have that for the dji mini 3 pro.. That thing can stay up in some serious wind that would give my bigger drones a hard time, its incredible. I wonder how much weight it could pull, probably not much but the motors and esc seem strong. Ive heard great things about the mini 2 and i want to pick one up to have with the mini 3 or maybe ill go for a bigger dji drone like the air2/2s. But the Avata is really tempting to me plus then i could use the goggles and controller for a FPV drone..that i dont have yet lol.. FPV is also cool on a rc plane i like flying it from like the cockpit area where i have the camera mounted and it almost feels like a crappy graphics simulator with the analog fpv lol but it works and its pretty damn cheap.

An incident occurred on September 3, 2023 and the PA State police now have my Air 2S. I was filming a hyper lapse video of the sunset when I received a critical battery error (my own stupidity) and the drone made an emergency landing about 400 meters from home. I could see that it had landed on a neighbors property and waited until the next morning to go there and ask permission to search. When I did they told me that they had found it and called the police who came and took the drone. I was happy to hear that it was found and figured that all I needed to do was call, explain what happened, and go retrieve it from them. I made that call on September 4 and was told that the officer involved would have to call me back. I waited a few days without hearing a word then he finally contacted me. He informed me that I wouldn't be getting the drone back soon if at all because there had been other complaints, about drone flyers in my neighborhood. I explained that I could easily prove that there was no malicious intent on my part by showing him the flight logs. I also told him that everything I filmed would be on the memory card in the drone and, if he removed the battery, he would find a sticker with my name, address and phone number on it. He didn't want to hear that though and was very arrogant and downright rude when he told me that he was gathering everyone in the area who had complained and they were taking me to court. When I inquired about a timeline he said that he couldn't even start the 'investigation' until he gets off of 3rd shift. Its been a month and he still has not started the investigation. Since then I've done some research and found that civil forfeiture laws exist that allow them to keep property indefinitely even if there are never any charges or arrests made.

What about a two drone rig? Two phantom, four pros with a string between them and the grappling hook section hangs from the middle of that string and you could have the two phantoms spread out for enough to be safe from each other. He would just have to have two pilots coordinating there drag and lift moves together. That way you’d have a double the lift. A master pilot like you can I want to be able to handle it… I’m thinking if you had them with say a 3 foot or 4 foot string between them with the grappling hook, hanging from the center, put both phantoms in tripod mode as soon as you’re up in the air, and very slowly maneuver it into place and drag and lift… I know I’m making it sound much simpler than it is but I could picture it. I think it could work.

I hooked it perfectly, pulled the drone slightly upward and then... my air 2's engines errored out and did an emergency shut off sending the air 2 toppling to the ground and leaving the M2P stuck in the tree. The next day my work hired a tree trimmer to go retrieve the M2P, apparently they didn't quite understand the assignment because we basically paid them $400 to gently retrieve the drone with their ladders and they literally showed up on site and threw a rock at it knocking the drone from the tree.

Centennial Park does have rules on their website regarding the takeoff & landing of drones being not allowed, they cannot however tell you that you can’t fly over the park since it is a public park. While some people have their opinions on how you should have handled the situation, my guess like anyone else’s is that she was probably told by her boss to tell you about the rules and that you couldn’t fly. Being polite and informative are the way to go with these interactions as a lot of security guards & police are ignorant to the actual FAA regulations & rules where I do take opportunities to inform them and be respectful. If they call the police, let them because most of time police will not do much other than ease the tension with the situation. I would like to hear your opinion and knowledge on this matter as you stated that you have been “flying there for years”. All the best to you & God bless you.

Is there anywhere I can go and read about where I can fly and if somebody tells me random stuff like the security guard told you; how do I know I'm correct to fly there for sure?

I hear that Plano Texas has ordinances against flying drones in their parks. I don't know if those ordinances are enforced well, however.

actually some city parks do have rules about drones. if i was yall i would have just left peacefully instead of making it an issue then maybe came back later and talk to park management about it or something
@skyspectre8954 Жыл бұрын
Methinks an Inspire 2 would be a worthwhile addition to your fleet. Probably could have yanked that thing off that roof without breaking a sweat. On the other hand, you probably wouldn't want to take that kind of risk with a $10k drone. Great video!!
@antonyh37 Жыл бұрын
Any inspire should be able to retrieve that drone. Over 6 lbs of drone lifting power.

Hey Ken great video man! I think you handled that situation in the beginning very well. I'm sure as much as you fly you get approached often and I have seen you be so polite to people that are just nasty to your face. Just politely informed them and keep doing as you are! 👍👍 Btw Barkley seems like a really good guy to have around in a critical situation, lol very calm and informing you the whole time. Great PRM "pilot Resource Management"

Actually very disappointed in the way you handled that in the first minute when the lady walked up to you. You as a grown man acted childish and rude.

NC has laws regarding where they can be flown. Some parks you can some you can’t. Some of it it federal law some of it is state. What’s on the books in NC is basically you can fly over your own land no problem, you can’t fly and spy on your neighbors. There is a list of state and county parks you can’t fly but not really a list of where you can’t. Also drones can’t be used in taking game or assisting of taking game including using them to fish. To sum it up, NC is fairly restrictive.

Nice try though. Would the Mavic 3 have more lift power? If it were just that drone alone, you probably would’ve had it. I suspect that external camera on top of the older drone what tip the weight over what the P4 P could do. You also had the additional weight of the section of fishing pole. I don’t know how much that was with the rope.

I always balance my props. The drones fly better and quieter with balanced props.

Ken it was 3DR solo drone. They r a heavy weight drone. Still got mine
@RonaldBrown59 Жыл бұрын
That 3DR Solo was probably heavier than your Phantom 4, nice try though, you almost got it to the edge of the roof. Glad you were able to recover and not loose you P4 up there. And you even avoided another run in with the security guard. Great video, thanks for sharing.

I like your car but police might not approve of how closely it resembles theirs. Crown Vic's also look cool in all black, dark blue or a really dark brown undercover style, along with your decal of course.

For drone rescues try lowering a neodymium magnet and stick it to a motor. Not that it would have worked here, it's just safer for your wallet.

Use a magnet on a string would probably be the easiest way wouldn't it....for the smaller drone up on the rooftop...

What about a fishing line reel attached to the P4 using same hook but instead of lifting the drone you slowly release the line toward you, pull it and catch the drone with a net. Nah, too crazy.
@mannythehunter Жыл бұрын
Wondering if maybe a fishing pole with a treble hook. Fly the hook up and drop then pull on the line with the pole.
@Bobster986 Жыл бұрын
Hey Ken! Guess what? That wasn't a toy drone, its an old 3D Robotics, Solo with a optional 3x gimbal and GoPro Hero 3 Black. I think you should go back with the Inspirer 2 and grab it! 🙂
