100 on TOEFL in 90 DAYS!? How Long to Fluent English?

How long does it actually take to learn English? The answer might surprise you. People love talk about the 10,000 hour rule, but it actually takes way longer to become "fluent" in English! And you can definitely get there in a year if you put in the time.
Obviously it takes hard work, but most people just say they've been studying English for x amount of time without actually knowing HOW MUCH TIME.
Never tell someone you've been learning English for x years. Know these things and think of it this way instead.

分享一下我个人的英语学习经历吧。我英文从初中开始，一直到大学2年级，都是在及格线徘徊。尝试过几乎所有的方法去提高，最后都失败了。唯一剩下的，没有尝试过的选项，就是“背单词”。 于是，大学二年级的暑假，我硬逼着自己，去背4级和6级的词典。最后，就是随便翻开任何一页上的任何一个单词，都能说出中文的意思。然后，大三的时候，我同时参加了4级和6级的考试（同一天，一个是上午，一个是下午）。然后，两个都过了。现在，我已经在英语国家取得了微电子方向的博士学位并工作了。有的时候，最蠢的办法，恰恰是最有效的办法。 I want to share my personal experience of English learning. My English study started in my secondary school (junior high school). And I was struggling for barely passing the exam in almost 8 years (until sophomore in university). I tried every method on my hand and failure was the only outcome. The only one I did not tried is "rote memorization". So, during the summer vacation, I decided to give it a shoot. So, I brought a dictionary for CET4 & CET6 and I forced myself to memory every word in it. By the end of the summer, I can tell you the meaning of any word in that dictionary in Chinese. During the 3rd year in college, I went to the CET4 and CET6 on the same day (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) and passed both of them. Now, I have received my PhD in Microelectronics from the University in English speaking country and working there. Sometimes, the most effective approach is the most "stupid" way and you have to bite the bullet.

我个人体会在国内能学好英语，对于大部分人来说行不通。首先，语言和开车一样是个熟练工种，用的越频繁进步越快。其次，国内普遍上课教的东西很教条，有些表达方式或单词外国人虽然懂意思，但根本不会这么用。再其次就是学习方法，找到适合自己的，能激发兴趣的方法把被动转为主动学习。最后，也是最重要的客观条件就是没有语言环境，出国只要不扎在华人堆里，别的干嘛都要听说读写英语，生活里学习里工作里就练了。综上所述，国内或许只能打打最初的基础，但想说的道地，说的流利，踏踏实实出国学吧！

Because I found mostly Americans pick up phrases instead of verbs, like burning off my dinner, go through my whole story, throw in the towel, showing my color etc. where am I supposed to go? I am a Chinese who have been a life language learner. My daughter is born in the U.S., and attended school there. She rated my colloquial English at near native speaker level. My written English could be rated very high, because my essay score on the CBEST (the test to get teaching credential in California) was a perfect 5, and I passed CBEST in one shot. The studying method I devised on how to speak and use words better is to make it into a game for myself. I would first use the new word to make ten different sentences, and then use those words in conversations in the next 3 days, regardless whether the word would make sense in the context of the dialogues. I would also ask my target audience to help me if I mispronounce or misuse the words. This process helps to convert short term memory into long term memory. The next step is to find all the synonyms and learn the fine differences between related words. I would apply the aforementioned process to each of the words learned. Each person learns in different ways, and the first step to effective learning is to find out which sense is the most effective for you, and apply it first. For example, I know I am a visual learner, so cue cards are my primary tool. Explore and experiment.

马老师您在视频里多次提到学习方法，我想请教一下有效的学习方法应该是从哪里下手呢？是从单词还是句子或者语法呢？思考过后我觉得想要提高英语水平不止是这些的，口语是非常重要的，比如很多时候我在纸上可以写出正确的句子，但是和外国人沟通的时候同样的句子也会出现语法错误，可能由于我们从小都是应试教育的原因，说得特别少，我想努力去改变这一点，还有一种情况就是很多单词我上学的时候学过，读的时候有很强烈的印像，但就是想不起来中文什么意思了，甚至我能拼写出这个单词，工作这么久了再回头学习英文，我的记忆力已经远远不如二十多岁的时候了，所以我想找到能够属于自己的英语学习方法，或者先参考一下别人的方法去学习看看，辛苦老师了！感谢🙏

我觉得文言文吧，其实大概看懂半文言文的水平就可以了。四大名著读懂了就已经进步很大了，纯古老的文言文中国人自己也不太懂，大部分要借助注释或网络查询理解。但诗词可以多看看，意境太好了

3500很少...社区大学直接开文科入学..强行刷A..刷一年就OK啦.用心做.社区大学很简单老师也用心教..所以一年就能流利..我雅思四分进个社区大学从两千五到现在6000＋。没有背过一个单词全是看多了就记住了..也许我不适合背书..无法单独学英语课..要用科目掩盖语言的无聊就能学了..天天背英语没有目的实在学不会

I did involve lots of effort in learning English during my senior high and colledge period. The problem is, if I listen and watch some English news(Fox, CNN ,BBC etc.), or someone's (like Trump) speech, unless caption added on, even if I've tried to listen several sentences over n over again, it's still tough for me to capture the meaning.
