I thought the same thing. I recently read a book on this topic and it emphasized how good it is for people to listen and say "I love you" every time you feel it. It will never be a waste to repeat it if it is said when it really is meant. The human being is normalized to keep his feelings or feel ashamed when showing them, but the truth is that it should not be this way because the power of the phrase "I love you" can make people very happy. Many people choose to ignore or dont want to admit that men are taught to have been responsible and strong for ourselves as well as for women who are more vulnerable. And showing emotions is in general seen as a weakness. Just look at movies. The most badass characters are the ones that show no emotions.
