Well, I never look an opportunity in the eye and don’t take a swing. If you read this, and thing Pete would have an interest; I’d sure be interested to hear, if he were to start with a blank sheet of paper…. What would he do with a 1200cc Honda Goldwing engine from the 80s? I think they are fascinating engines and I’m treating into one as an exercise in insanity…fuel injection turbo etc What I wouldn’t pay to take these two to lunch and chat

@@GregQuirin It's one of my favorite American 4cyls. Poor man's Cosworth! I did that project back when Jr sprints were still cheap and fun to race on dirt tracks. Never was really sure why they called it the Lima engine when the same plant made another 4cyl, the HSC, a pushrod affair based on the old straight 6.. went into Tempos and Taruri (Tauruses?). I wish I had video to share of one running with a Volvo head on it (the Pinto "Lima" engine, not an HSC)

As a machinist I have alot of respect for what it takes to make unique components like Kevin is able to. I am wondering now if my "crazy idea" of running a ford head on my mitsubishi to turn the 4cyl 8 valve into a 16 valve head. Billet would be the ticket but why not reuse what I can if i have the capability to make it work. Love the video and the history. No scripts and retakes total armature, however I realize the importance to capture what Kevin and Pete are doing and they are willing to share their talent with any and everyone. Most stuff online is all pre planned and scripted and I understand it shows better however I think telling like it is represents how stuff goes down in Pete’s shop and on the race track. Thank you Greg.

Around the 32:00 mark he talked about making a pattern from the 3d printed part. There is no need to do such a thing. Modern foundries have the capability to print wax models or use a sla printer to make patterns. If he can make an accurate 3D model his ideas can be realized quickly and not to costly. Even an entire head could be printed and cast afterwards.
@kevinbraun6272
@kevinbraun6272 Жыл бұрын
We are trying that with a two stroke engine I’m working on. However we have had problems with the temperature of the aluminum not being hot enough and leaving ash that contaminated the casting.
@DevilFruitUserLogia

@@kevinbraun6272 If you are using a 3d printed pattern you need a special resin that leave very little if any residu there is also a PLA variant that is designed for casting. With a wax printed pattern the wax is removed by heating the mould, afterwards the metal is poured.

Love It!!! AMAZING AMERICAN ENGINEERING AND INGENUITY At its very BEST! Working with what you got and what you know! I remember reading all about these engines when they were actually being developed and run in Hot Rod and many other magazines like car craft and also things like Popular Machanics. These guys unfortunately are living history and so glad Greg you are making this kind of video documentary about so much important advances in technology which has been (borrowed), (stolen) and possibly bought by today's modern car manufacturers! To basically set the record straight on where these amazing developments originated from to begin with. A Dream and a machine shop, with lots or capital and a extremely talented machinist. All coming together to achieve success and sometimes failures. This is how we all learn as to what works and what doesn't. Me personally am no fan of overhead cams, and there's a good reason for this. Ask corvette why they've been a standard camshaft location since day one? And somehow they have still won almost every year against all their competitors who are deeply immersed in the European OHC and 60 valves per cylinder BS. This is a concept that works well on paper, but definitely doesn't perform nearly as well in reality, the dyno results don't lie. The overall loss of torque has still not been overcome by the increased RPMs and top end HP results from a conventional 2 valve standard camshaft configuration of the old days! Not to mention the overly complex methods necessary in order to run the OHC designs suck! Like putting band-aids on band-aids basically. What's to be gained by increasing the parasitic losses of extremely tight belts, and the extremely heavy extra masses gained in weight and rotation mass by adding 3 more camshafts to a engine? Loss! Same deal with all the extra valves. When it comes down to fluid dynamics like anything else, one bigger open hole is going to flow much more volume with less restrictions than adding multiple smaller valves, guides, seats and ports for the fluid to have to navigate through! I'm not saying that it's wrong, I'm just stating obvious facts from physics. This is why still to this very day Top Fuel dragster engines are limited to 500CDI and still are running a antique style 2 valve hemispherical combustion chamber style cylinder head! Because they work and are as simplistic as possible when it comes down to flowing air in and out! Period. At the end of the day any internal expansion engine is nothing more than a air pump, by removing the fuel. It's not a case of making power through adding more fuel unless your talking a diesel or particularly a Nitromethane powered engine which carries its own oxygen source to enhance the combustion of said fuel like Methanol or Gasoline. It comes down to the meer fact that the most air that can enter and exist such a cylinder and head in the most unrestricted manner usually wins in the HP and Torque departments. It's much more involved than just flow though, many other aspects I'm not even going to get into like Port Velocities, combustion chamber shapes for swirling effects along with scavenging of the cylinders all play huge rolls in the overall development of big numbers on the dynamometer. Hope that clarifies my reasoning behind why I don't particularly like these kind of designs, numbers and physics don't lie. But because I'm always open to new concepts and designs when it comes down to engineering in general, it still fascinates me enough to maybe learn something new or different that's been overlooked by history! 😊❤
