Look at you Nicola! Eating tomatoes there and in the tomato pie! OMG I'm craving a hoagie now. For the roast pork, I used to work 5 minutes away from a place that made Italian Roast Pork sandwiches. It's not even a taste that you can describe, but you crave it. It's like nothing you've ever tried before. I miss it! As for the price you can tell that Philly is a worker's city. They do food that sticks to your ribs and it's comfort food. It's going to keep you going for hours. It's also big enough portions that you can share or save half for another meal. It must be so fun for you to visit all of these different areas and compare the foods that were shaped by the culture and what was available 100-150 years ago. They've taken these foods and learned to cook them to perfection. This looks like it was such a fun trip for both of you. Thanks for a great video.

Two things: the standard veggie topping for authentic roast pork is broccoli rabe, but John’s refuses, using spinach instead. I am so glad you guys got to sample other foods in the Philadelphia area. Water Ice or as the local say "wooder ice" is amazing. It's a summer staple in the Philadelphia area. You could have gotten a good water ice at any Rita's. Rita's is all over and I think they are going nationwide. My wife screamed at the screen when you got her favorite tomato pie without cheese. I can take it either way but it's a no deal for her without that cheese. I screamed at the screen when you went for condiments at John's Roast Pork. Thankfully you tasted the sandwiches before ruining them with ketchup. My family revered the pound cake. Mostly the ones from Sara Lee. It was served after dinner with either coffee or tea. Sometimes if the evening was really special my mom would top the pound cake with strawberries. When the woman behind the counter said that the rolls in the case were "snow flake" rolls I got a special warm smile inside because my father would take my brothers and I to the bakery every Sunday to get a dozen snow flakes. Soooooo good. The Hog Island story for the hoagies is the one I'm familiar with from my childhood. Just like my comments about your cheesesteak video you can get a great hoagie at any mom and pop pizza place from anywhere in the Philadelphia area but I've got to admit the one you got from Riccis looked fabulous. Great video and I look forward to seeing your next adventure.

That tomato pie is amazingly inexpensive! I've spent more on just a regular loaf of sandwich bread. It looks more like focaccia than pizza. I really appreciate the research you do when you visit a city. You find the best, most authentic places, rather than just go to the tourist spots. If you ever make it to Hawaii, you should try shave ice. It's another version of ice with syrup, but the ice is scraped off a big block by a special machine. This technique gives it a light, fluffy texture, almost like snow. They sometimes serve it on top of things like sweetened azuki beans and fruit. Thanks!

John's should stay open to at least 6pm on a Saturday. Look at the line. Maybe they figure if they are open until 6, orders will go out until 7 and they will be cleaning up until 8 or 9.
@thebritstryАй бұрын
We completely agree! Keeping the store open longer would definitely help accommodate all those eager customers in line. I guess they have to close at some point though and you make a good point about the clean up time

If you happen to go to Maryland for steamed crabs, crab cakes, and cream of crab soup, you should absolutely try the authentic Smith Island Cake. You'll find it on Smith Island of course in Maryland. Another Maryland favorite is Berger Cookies.
@jeffhampton2767Ай бұрын
Yes Maryland should be next. Love jumbo lump crabcakes 😊

@@thebritstry As I mentioned months ago...Pappas is the place to get the best crab cake and cream of crab soup. It's one of Oprah Winfrey's favorites. ENJOY!! I'm actually taking a trip back home to Maryland in a few days to meet my new granddaughter and see my grandson. I'll be stopping at Pappas for a crab cake before heading back down to South Carolina where I live now.

Everyone from Philly, or, South Jersey pronounces "water" as "wooder".

I love a good hoagie. The roll is what we call "Italian bread", it's very easy to make at home. My favorite pound cake is lemon flavored, with lots of lemony powder sugar glaze. We do love our jaw-breaker sandwiches. Check out the Dagwood cartoon. I love spinach and onions on my cheesesteak. It seems like wherever Italians settled, they developed delicious food traditions.
@thebritstryАй бұрын
Absolutely! Italian bread truly makes a hoagie special, and lemon pound cake with glaze sounds divine. Food traditions really do bring people together! Thanks for watching

Yum, the pulled pork sandwich looks wonderful! For me, the pulled pork takes it over beef, although I love both. Give me a pulled pork sandwich made from scratch on a great bun and I'm in heaven! Great video!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The roast pork was delicious . We are craving another right now. Thanks for watching

Pulled pork is something different. That is a roast pork sandwich. Pulled pork is shredded pork from a barbecue smoker.

Pound cake is good with strawberries and whipped cream, like strawberry shortcake. A drizzle of chocolate is welcome. Subway is awful compared to other places. Especially the local shops anywhere.

Nichola, the best way to eat a hoagie, for those of us with small mouths, is to take bites from each side until you get to the bottom. Then two bites takes care of the bottom. Then return to the top of the sides, taking alternating bites. This also works for the cheesesteak and the roast pork sandwiches
@thebritstryАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your technique! Eating a hoagie can be quite the challenge, but your method sounds effective for those with smaller mouths. Thanks for watching

I am a lifelong Philadelphian and loved all of your choices, except Stock's. I live just a few blocks from Stock's bakery. You said that a pound cake has "a pound of butter ... " Which is why I hate Stock's "pound cakes"! They admit that they don't use butter in their cakes. They use margarine! No wonder they taste so weird! Better off with Entenmann's pound cake for an authentic taste.
@thebritstryАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's always interesting to hear different perspectives on local favorites. We didn't know about the the butter vs. margarine change! now we want to come back to try another version.

I often eat a similar sandwich at a nationwide chain and they do toast it exactly the way I like, but it doesn't hold a candle to what you two are having. This is the limitation of living on an island as opposed to the mainland USA.

Im a lifelong Philadelphian, this is a really amazing list of places! Stocks bakery is an all time gem, as is Coropolesse (pronounced "corpo-lees") but you could have stayed in south philly and gotten the best tomato pie at Cacias! Also, the cheese version of tomato pie is just a dusting of pecorino, it's not like pizza and most people like it that way, I know I do. The ultimate tomato pie move is to take it home and then top it with a good anchovy and cover it in olive oil, kind of like a philly pan con tomate. The BEST
@thebritstryАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your insights! It’s always great to hear from fellow Philadelphians about their favorite spots. Cacia's and the tomato pie tips sound delicious! Next time we will give it a try.
