The hardest video I’ve ever watched on KZbin. I work in a rock quarry and did strictly maintenance for 3 + years. Changed belts, bearings and gearbox’s on the regular. Now that I’m a supervisor I forbid impacts of any size near a taper lock bushings and push bolts. My theory is you can feel it before it breaks to see if you need a torch. Glad y’all have this done by now and I hope you tightened all bolts evenly on the taper lock.

Just a Fyi. My granddad worked on legs. when we had to change motors , gearboxes anything heavy we would rig a pulley at top. attach broken piece to top. Then go to bottom and attach new part. When you carefully lower old part it will bring up new part. lot easier to control and you dont hurt yourself. make sure pulley and rope are rated for wieght.

Smart idea to lower the gear box by rope. It was good to rehearse the procedure in your mind. Your discussion about the squirrel getting involved in jamming the belt brought back a hunting memory when we were moose hunting up in northern Alberta. We were taking the moose to the butcher and there was a truck accident on the main highway to Hinton. We had to stay in a motel overnight. We returned to our 5th wheel trailer the next afternoon. The fan motor was making a terrible noise. The problem was that a mouse got caught in the furnace squirrel cage fan. It only cost about $250 to get it fixed at the RV dealer when we got back to cowtown. I paid the bill. I figured it was reasonable accommodation for $250. The mouse did not fare very well. It was dead. By the way, the moose tasted great. We split it three ways. 😊

Maybe the gearbox is back at the top by the time I’m writing this but we had to do the same thing. I’d recommend a pulley and a long rope. Either hook the rope to a side by side or pull with a couple guys on ground. Much safer to get it to the top. Be safe!

I crush gravel besides farming. Those dodge gearbox’s and bearing are some of the best there is. Unfortunately there is no ryhme or reason as to when they are gonna fail. We change the gearbox oil every year. Either 220 or we switched everything to synthetic 150. Yes those gearbox’s can be rebuilt, that’s what we do when one fails just make sure it’s a dodge you get back not a Chinese one. There should be one around Alex as central specialties would have lots of gearboxes to be rebuilt. Not sure if superior in morris would have anything like that either

I agree with the pulley comments, but I'll go further. Marine grade stainless pulleys won't rust up on you, dacron rope won't degrade in the sun, and a nice cleat to tie it off securely. Not only is it nice to raise and lower equipment, but you can have a 5 gal bucket full of tools up there waiting when you get to the top of the ladder.

When you go to install the new gear box get a 3 inch pulley, 100 ft. Of rope, tie one end to the gear box, run the rope thru the pulley that you mount on top of the leg, then Dougo ties the other rope end to the bumper of the “Struggle Bus” and over the radio tell him to on the count of 3 to floor the gas pedal of the Struggle Bus until he hears a loud bang…then stop. Come on guys, at least give it a smiley face!!

One of the best videos I’ve seen in a while! Dodge Industrial makes a decent gear reducer. 80% of the time a failure is lube related. So if it was properly filled at install it should be ok at 3 years. Really no huge leak indicators on the outside. With that said, standard oil is good for 4000 hours, synthetic is good for 8000. No way you have anywhere close to that many hours in three years on a grain leg. Ditch the belts and go to a direct drive SEW.
