Smart idea to lower the gear box by rope. It was good to rehearse the procedure in your mind. Your discussion about the squirrel getting involved in jamming the belt brought back a hunting memory when we were moose hunting up in northern Alberta. We were taking the moose to the butcher and there was a truck accident on the main highway to Hinton. We had to stay in a motel overnight. We returned to our 5th wheel trailer the next afternoon. The fan motor was making a terrible noise. The problem was that a mouse got caught in the furnace squirrel cage fan. It only cost about $250 to get it fixed at the RV dealer when we got back to cowtown. I paid the bill. I figured it was reasonable accommodation for $250. The mouse did not fare very well. It was dead. By the way, the moose tasted great. We split it three ways. 😊

The hardest video I’ve ever watched on KZbin. I work in a rock quarry and did strictly maintenance for 3 + years. Changed belts, bearings and gearbox’s on the regular. Now that I’m a supervisor I forbid impacts of any size near a taper lock bushings and push bolts. My theory is you can feel it before it breaks to see if you need a torch. Glad y’all have this done by now and I hope you tightened all bolts evenly on the taper lock.

Just a Fyi. My granddad worked on legs. when we had to change motors , gearboxes anything heavy we would rig a pulley at top. attach broken piece to top. Then go to bottom and attach new part. When you carefully lower old part it will bring up new part. lot easier to control and you dont hurt yourself. make sure pulley and rope are rated for wieght.
@BornToFarm101MN
@BornToFarm101MN Жыл бұрын
Maybe the gearbox is back at the top by the time I’m writing this but we had to do the same thing. I’d recommend a pulley and a long rope. Either hook the rope to a side by side or pull with a couple guys on ground. Much safer to get it to the top. Be safe!

I crush gravel besides farming. Those dodge gearbox’s and bearing are some of the best there is. Unfortunately there is no ryhme or reason as to when they are gonna fail. We change the gearbox oil every year. Either 220 or we switched everything to synthetic 150. Yes those gearbox’s can be rebuilt, that’s what we do when one fails just make sure it’s a dodge you get back not a Chinese one. There should be one around Alex as central specialties would have lots of gearboxes to be rebuilt. Not sure if superior in morris would have anything like that either

I loved how your dad looked at you when you were talking about something tragic happening “shut up is what he said with his eyes” I watch every video and never comment, but this one had me laughing and freaked out all in one. Be safe and maybe a harness bungee when your in those bins tied to the top of the bin entrance so if anything ever happened you guys would be ok. Just a random thought.

That looked like a real pain, but at least you were able to get it down safely. Wonder if a belay device would be of use to you, you know the stuff rock climbers use to let themselves down a rock face. Easy to use and can handle a lot of weight. Good luck! Good job getting it down and keeping us entertained. Thanks

Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Well I believe you found your problem. That gear box has come apart inside. Wow. A mess. Might take a bit to rebuild that gear box. Pretty heavy duty box. But that is the problem. Now you need the fix. Either rebuild or get a new one. Probably costs a few dollars. Oh my. Seeing Dougo and Chet working on top of the grain leg was a good comedy show for sure. Ok my you two. Hilarious it was. Parts everywhere. Using that rope to get it down was hilarious. Now how to get it back up there once fixed. Oh my. You two put on quite a show. Don’t mean anything negative just giving you both a bad time. Know it was not easy situation. You two together is the best. Totally enjoyable. Let’s us know how this cones out please. Thanks for everything Larsons. The Iowa Farm Boy.

One of the best videos I’ve seen in a while! Dodge Industrial makes a decent gear reducer. 80% of the time a failure is lube related. So if it was properly filled at install it should be ok at 3 years. Really no huge leak indicators on the outside. With that said, standard oil is good for 4000 hours, synthetic is good for 8000. No way you have anywhere close to that many hours in three years on a grain leg. Ditch the belts and go to a direct drive SEW.

I agree with the pulley comments, but I'll go further. Marine grade stainless pulleys won't rust up on you, dacron rope won't degrade in the sun, and a nice cleat to tie it off securely. Not only is it nice to raise and lower equipment, but you can have a 5 gal bucket full of tools up there waiting when you get to the top of the ladder.
