This is one of the most cinematic and well put together videos I've seen on topics such as these. Most videos on these types of topics simply cut together some grainy cold war footage. I can tell you took time to color grade and balance the footage to help convey a sense of dread and the seriousness the topic deserves. Also, the steady pacing feels as if the video is slowly marching toward an inevitable conclusion. Nice work.

It's important to note that essentially every single nuclear reactor that wasn't created by the USSR before Chernobyl is incapable of the devastation that is imagined if a nuclear reactor is damaged. Even nuclear material transfer containers are essentially unbreakable. They can be hit with a full speed train without a dent, and even if there was a dent, the imaginary green goop that people imagine nuclear waste to be doesn't exist; it's all solid. Nuclear reactors can most definitely be hit with a missile and continue operating normally, since there's enough concrete to, well, stop neutrinos. Even then, any slight vibrations in the soil or air will result in the reactor shutting itself down automatically anyways. Even if the shock ruptured the reactor and an actual meltdown occurred, it would be entirely contained within the reactor. The reactor core would simply, well, melt down. No explosion. Chernobyl was a disaster far greater than anything ever imaginable today. Fukushima, which for some reason is often compared in the same sentence, was a result of poor planning where all backup electricity was stopped, and there is not a single recorded death from radiation due to that incident. The deaths are all from people trampling over each other out of fear.
@demoniack81
@demoniack81 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Chernobyl might well be the single deadliest peacetime event in human history, but not for the reasons people think. It only killed a couple thousand people with radiation, but it undoubtedly killed tens of millions due to the widespread rejection of nuclear power that it caused. If it weren't for Chernobyl, civilian nuclear research would have continued, reactors would have kept getting cheaper and more efficient, and use of fossil fuels for power generation would probably be relegated just to poor and politically unstable countries. For example Italy was about to go full nuclear just like France, we had several plants planned and in various stages of regulatory approval, and one that was being built and was 90% complete. They were all canceled and the existing reactors were shut down. And so instead 7 million people lose their lives to air pollution every year, in large part caused just by heating and electricity generation (60% of the world's emissions are heating and electricity generation). And to say nothing of the devastating consequences of climate change that we're only just starting to see the beginnings of. And despite the fact we *know* all of these things, people *still* reject nuclear power even when it's clear that it's our only hope for salvation. Instead of eliminating that 60% of emissions, we're spending trillions to electrify cars which only make up like 6% of global emissions, and people think that's going to fix everything. Thanks soviets, you really did us a solid there.

It should also be noted that people are trying to find loopholes in MAD. Would you launch your nuclear arsenal if an opposing power used just one nuke? Two? Four? Some Western analysts reckon that, should Putin use a tactical nuke, NATO might respond with a massive conventional counterstrike to rapidly de-escalate an already very dangerous situation. But truth be told, no one really knows... And as for strategic nukes, once one of those birds start flying, its a pretty sure bet that they'll ALL start flying... Such as the MAD Doctrine dictates!

@@sdwone MAD dictates that one cannot perform a nuclear strike on another nuclear power without destroying themselves in the process. However, destroying yourself and the rest of the world just for a show of force that killed nobody is not a good idea. MAD will not trigger less a nuclear power thinks that they're going to die anyways
@sdwone
@sdwone 2 жыл бұрын
@@neonbunnies9596 Mmmm... Not really sure what you're trying to say but picture this. Let's say hypothetically Russia goes for a tactical strike against Ukraine.. A likely scenario. The Russians are getting their asses kicked, thanks to all the modern military hardware we're giving to the Ukrainians so, Putin opts to use bigger weapons. Going along with some of the current war games being discussed, NATO then retaliates with a MASSIVE conventional strike to a) Punish Russia and b) to hopefully encourage Putin to de-escalate the situation because NATO didn't opt for a nuclear counterstrike. But Putin, losing the war and suffering heavy losses by NATO, now starts to think the unthinkable... Launch a direct nuclear strike against targets in Europe, now that WW3 has effectively started. The big question here is, does he go all out, or go for a limited exchange? Well... He's losing the war and he knows he has NO chance against NATO... Surrender? But then what? Russia, as he knows it, would then cease to exist. And because NATO struck first, he may well reason that MAD has just been rendered null and void anyway, because a nuclear power just struck another nuclear power... In a conventional strike. So essentially it boils down to either surrender and let his people live, or take NATO out and die. Stark choice! But one that, should he commit, he knows he has to go ALL the way, not to achieve victory, but to ensure the utter destruction of his enemy... AKA MAD! As I said, a chilling hypothetical! And the BIGGEST gamble in ALL of Human History, by NATO, that Putin won't invoke MAD because he was hit conventionally. But I don't know... The fact that he's already been flexing his nuclear muscles, makes me believe that, once NATO turns their current proxy war with him into a real war, and knowing that he hasn't got a hope in Hell of winning... He'll bring Hell to us ALL...
@neonbunnies9596
@neonbunnies9596 2 жыл бұрын
@@sdwone except NATO knows that Russia probably knows this and would prefer to not have WWIII with the largest nuclear power on Earth. Besides, NATO is defensive. So unless a stray Russian rocket accidentally falls into Poland, they have no reason to get involved. And why should they invade anyways? If they're choosing to subdue the Russian threat with a pre-emptive strike, they risk destroying themselves in the process, and Russia knows this. Even if NATO chooses the very risky decision to attack despite Article 5 not having a justification to be triggered, it's important to remember that Russia nor NATO want a full nuclear exchange. Most wars don't last long, because all parties can see where it's going and skip to the end. If one party has made massive pushes into another country but can only hold their position at a mountain range, then they skip to end and sign a peace treaty where the new border is at that mountain range. No need to spill blood over what everybody can see coming. Once Russia realizes it can't beat NATO, they can just skip to the end and try to sue for peace. No need to destroy the world. And "Russia would cease to exist?" What makes you think that? Western economists know that the economic depression of post-WWI Germany caused WWII, so they wouldn't do anything that could potentially radicalize the Russian population. Also, why would Putin choose to kill millions of people, including his by proxy, in a full nuclear strike instead of just going for peace? Putin's goal is to take over the world with Russia. He can't do that if the country in a nuclear wasteland. "Admit defeat and keep Russia alive" is probably the best option here, so they can hopefully recollect and reattack in the future.

U have to convince Putin that his family/ Russians ultimately will not survive nuclear exchange (war), despite deep bunkers. US has to train Africans in using heavy machinery to dig up Russians out of their bunkers, so that Africans can eat the Russians. US needs to distribute maps to Africans to show them where to dig for Russian meat.

I’m not at the kind of dark place where I think about it for any other reason, but when the missiles launch, I don’t intend to be around for their detonation. The mere thought of nuclear Armageddon is starting to become all too present on my mind, and it terrifies me how close we could be to the end. I hope that when the moment comes, history repeats and the world doesn’t end. But the likelihood is that the moment is fast approaching, and it won’t be a miscommunication this time. Hug your friends and family tighter. Love your pets more. Make peace with your mistakes and regrets. If there’s not much time left, make sure you make the most of it.

The situation The World is in right now is immensely scary... I had a nightmare a few weeks back, where I stepped out on my deck in the middle of the night, because it was as bright as day. As I stepped out the door, I saw a mushroom cloud on the horizon, I just muttered "Fuck... I'm dead..." Before I woke up in the most shocked state I have ever been. That feeling stayed with me for several days. To top it off, I rarely have nightmares. I'm usually calm and content, and sleep like a baby. That's all gone now.

I was born in 1965. I am old enough to remember 'Duck And Cover' drills and was part of CAP or Civil Air Patrol, which was a joke, it being in a Chicago suburb. But all my life I watched the skies for a distant flash, the hearald of the end. Sometimes I would lay awake at night, thinking about the glass of my windows blowing in at supersonic speeds, tearing my body apart as I slept or worse, Earth shaking booms that would wake me in time for my incineration...Or worse, a slow vicious death from irradiation mass hysteria, starvation, and a waterless dry throated death. I often tried not to think about these things, I tried not to think about Red Dawn where Powers Booth discusses what's left of China around a post apocalyptic campfire. Now, at 57, with kids in their teens, I know a terrible horrifying truth. My children are doomed. I no longer care about myself so much, I've felt pains of which you cannot imagine in my lifetime. May you never feel the pains, both physical and emotional that I have endured. Even to the worst of you I say this. But as I watch my country slide into Fascism, totalitarianism, and tyranny; and I watch as just the other day the polar caps had heat waves, I know that you all will be fighting over rusty cans of beans in the streets before long. This is the start. Putin is just one in a string of coming 'Strongmen' who will assume power and kill with impunity. Torture, starvation, enslavement, and Genocide are already taking place, even in our own country though smaller increments (here's looking at you, Home Depot, Walmart and Amazon) but they will grow. Soon enough, such things will come to our shores and all those people with their gun shops and gun stockpiles and yipeekayay bullshit will starve along with the rest of us, turning their weapons, not on Russia or China or Iran or North Korea or Saudi Arabia or Kazakhstan or Pakistan but on thy neighbor. YOU. And the Preppers in their little holes, the billionaires on St. Kitts or in Iceland or the rednecks up in the Virginia Hills or in Idaho or Wyoming, they might last a bit...but whoopdeedoo. It won't matter. they won't re-make our world. Those people can't think for themselves to begin with and the rest wont share or lend a hand. It's coming. Yeah, I am a doomsayer because I have been watching the skies since 1973 or so, when I was old enough to understand to do so. And I can tell you, it's coming. And you're all so god damned fucked. It's too bad, too. Because just a few tweaks to our genome, reduction in the population, reduction in our agrression centers through genetic or chemical manipulation on a massive scale or through some kind of virus, and poof....no more wars. But good luck with that.

Otherwise great video, but the connection to nuclear power plants was a bit stretched to say the least. Nuclear power plants have nothing to do with nuclear war and the chance for a nuclear power plant to go critical - even during a war - is very low. NPP's are not just "quite safe", they are in fact the most safest form of power generation. More people have already died from Russia taking over the Chernobyl area than actually died in the accident itself. Why would an attacker even attack an NPP? They are so expensive infrastructure that the attacker would certainly want to use them themselves when they have taken over, not destroy them. Unless they are solely in the business of obliterating the other nation (which makes absolutely zero sense). And even then they might as well just use the nuclear bombs which are much more effective and powerful than trying to use NPPs as weapons.

@@hawtsauce1902 I am sorry what you are going through in Ukraine and I feel for you. I certainly have the privilege to take a look at the matter from an outside perspective, so take this with a grain of salt. However, that being said, I still think that even Putin is not that stupid that he wanted to utterly destroy whole of Ukraine. What would be the point of invading in the first place if it was? Wouldn't it have been quite a lot easier to just send a few nukes and be done with it? Putin in his delusions still thinks that Ukraine belongs to him and he is trying to take the country for himself, even if he does some damage on the way, the end justifies the means to these kind of a-holes. My point is, even to a maniac like Putin, Nuclear Power Plants still are not being used as weapons and they contribute nothing to the risk of all-out nuclear war.

I think his point was more in the sense of, countries will have power demands they cant meet due to Russia, so they will turn to nuclear power. Which is all fine, except if you have a nuclear power plant, you basically have the technology to make an nuclear bomb now too. Its a way to get into nuclear weapons but under good pretenses like "oh we only need all of this uranium and refinement for our power plants" but they could easily use all the infrastructure to then make bombs too

New nuclear reactors have passive safety features that, in the event of power loss, cause them to go dormant rather than melt down. Germany and other EU countries had it wrong by switching from nuclear to wind and solar. They had to use Russian LNG and local brown coal as backups to such intermittent sources. Even old light water reactors are safe compared to coal. Make new nuclear reactors and super deep geothermal plants with those new light pulse drills where the crust is thin enough.

Didn't the US supported and turned blind eye to murderous I$®@€£i occupation and forceful evictions of P@£€$tinians for more than 5 decades? 4.) Didn't the Cuban Missile crisis was all about the USSR putting it's defences across US borders in Cuba which is in stark similarity to today's Ukraine-Russia-US equation? 5.) Didn't the broken promise of US and NATO of not expanding eastwards resulted in this Russia's invasion of Ukraine?. I can't help but ask who is actually an "wolf in the sheep's clothing"?

I dunno the whole doomsday clock thing seems.. silly. I feel like instead of these clock times (which mean nothing to me) It should just be a degree of certainty. Such as a 90% certainty of nuclear war. (for example) Something that the majority of people can actually understand, as opposed to the silly boomer boomboom clock.

😡 Instead of posting such tripe on KZbin, contact the people behind the ‘Doomsday Clock’ and reprimand them for their foolishness . . . You are more qualified to hold an opinion on such matters as the survival of the human species 🥴!

@@sirmeowthelibrarycat I never implied i am more qualified on matters of survival of the species. Just that the clock analogy is lost on the majority of people, and the "minutes/seconds to" Doesn't really give a good understanding of how dire the circumstances are. I feel for something as important as nuclear war people should have a firm understanding of what it is the experts are saying. Though that's just like, my opinion.

I’m actually stationed in Europe right now and for some reason, I’m completely numb to any sense of fear for this situation. Once I get the call to act, My boots will probably hit ground in a matter of hours and I’ll just go from there
