I used to work at a commercial rock crushing company and we crushed river rock. The jaw we had was three times the size of yours. There was a screening deck that fed the jaw the larger rocks. The smaller rocks fell through and were sent either to cone crushers or another screener to sort out round rock for concrete. We easily had two miles of conveyor belt to transport the rock into the crusher area. Our jaw crusher didn't crush down as small as yours; we used cone and roller crushers to dial in the aggregate sizes we sold.

Ironically the hopper when you put it on initially is actually backwards from what it should be. It should be feeding from over the engine which is what that hoop on the top is for as it attaches to the hopper to shake it. The shaking action of the crusher will automatically feed the rock in with the proper chute and will keep it from launching those harder rocks. Also you need some way to move the rock away from the exit point, be it a hill side, a raised mound or a pit with a exit chute.

You know the gravel coming directly down is probably a major part of the problem with it. You already have it elevated a bit, you could get a used slide from a kids playpark or something and mount it right underneath to guide the gravel off to the side a bit where its easier to get with the loader. No need for a belt.

If this becomes a permanent installation, I think it might work well to build a raised platform for the crusher, where the new gravel will drop onto a sharply angled slope below, going off to one side. For example, looking at the crusher from the engine, rock is brought in from the right, gravel drops to angled channel going to left, where it can be pushed away using the power-blade of your choice. Lots of labor setting up the installation, cement to make concrete, but it should be cheaper than buying and maintaining conveyor belts. You could probably have a minor side hustle of performing gravel conversion for people who bring their own rocks(except the blue ones).

@jayaar59788 ай бұрын
I like your ingenuity -- I operated big Rock Crushing systems (Jaw/Cone/Rolls) for 8 years. I stood inside the crushing chambers and lifted heavy rocks up over my head to the next guy, many times. Don't be offended at my critique/suggestions...I want you to be successful (and live)). Hard Hats and Safety Glasses are Mandatory -- for the feed man, the loader operator and for bystanders. Those round rocks can jump 12 feet into the air, and do when you're not looking. Even with a hardhat, they will knock you silly. Knife-sharp rock shards are continuously being shot out of the crushing chamber. If you value your sense of sight, you will have safety glasses on, and don't stare into the chamber with rock going through. They can hammer your forehead also (actually, should have a face shield AND safety glasses on underneath, if looking in. Develop your sense of the crushing sounds to be your eyes, to know if it is running low, overloaded, or if a round one(s) are stuck at the bottom and won't crush, backing up the feed. DON'T poke that steel rod below the top of the crushing dies. If it gets between the die and a rock it can break your wrist, or shoot back out and into your skull (it's been done many times before). Don't let anyone convince you to dangle a chain, or weld a backhoe tooth on the steel rod and poke it it there -- people have died or become dismembered doing this. If plugged, let it run for awhile to get any fines to possibly pass through and create voids. If you have a gap between the Moving die and the first rocks, you can add some small rocks there to get them to hammer the bigger stuck rock forward and get a shift to take place. Then it might start crushing again. For a bouncing rock that won't get a bite, you first try to slowly reduce the throttle incrementally, but not enough to lose your torque and stall out, smoking the drive belts -- kill it quick if this happens. When you hit the right speed, gravity holds the round rock down so that the dies can get a bite without spitting it up into the air. If you end up shutting down to dig out, then first secure the flywheel -- like with a chain through the flywheel hole and around the frame, cinched with a binder. Otherwise, if you get a stuck rock loose, the flywheel can start turning and the dies will be moving, pinching arms, legs, feet that are working in the chamber. Next is to dig a gap between the Stationary Die and the bigger rocks, to give space for the rocks to move forward into. Get out every small rock you can -- you need voids to get the big stuck rocks to shift into. Pack small rocks into the gap between the Moving Die and the first big rocks. I always liked to dig a hole, if possible in the corner(s) of the moving die. That's a sweet spot for getting a shift to take place and then get a bite and crushing resumed. I don't know if your engine will have the power to start with a full chamber. (First remove the chain securing the Flywheel) Engage and Disengage / repeat to get a rocking of the flywheel. Time it so that you engage just when the flywheel starts rocking forward (after rocking backward). Go forward until it is peaking, then disengage and let it roll backward. Then engage when going forward again. Once you get a full revolution going, you should be good to go. Start at the minimum speed you can run without stalling, but will quickly need to speed up if you hear the crushing bogging down. You should be able to crack the offending rocks at the slower speed. Empty completely before entering new feed. Need to get it up on stationary wood blocks -- solid. You'll shake it to death sitting on rubber tires and the leveling jacks. The rear right jack handle is rotating constantly while in operation, so it is continuously going down and the unit is running out of level - and shaking. Don't fill above the jaw dies -- they are manganese alloy. Any other steel above the dies will eat out in no time. I cringed when watching the excavator filling the snowblower up to the brim. I like your second method, of hand-feeding it off the plate, as the jaw takes it and no more. Ask Santa for a controllable vibratory feeder. )) You might need a guard (mesh screen) on the inside of the flywheel for the drive belts. Even a 1" fly rock can knock 1 belt out of it's groove, and then it wipes out the entire rest of the belts -- been there, done that! Torque your die bolts every day, or twice a day, until you know they are holding. A loose die wears it's backing steel out quickly. Well there you have it, I wrote you a mini crushing manual....don't send it to China! Stay Safe, and Keep it Fun! ))
@ModernSelfReliance8 ай бұрын
This is great! Thank you for taking the time to do this.
@jayaar59787 ай бұрын
@ModernSelfReliance A lot of what I said about getting unstuck won't apply until you wear the ribs of the dies down close to flat. The ribs put all that energy into a focus, to make the rock explode. When flat, the rounded rocks won't get a bite and will just want to squirt upward. Sometimes adding a bigger rock on top will hold it down to get the bite. Sometimes you then add more feed on top of that. And then you might be digging it all out when fully plugged. But I was working crushers I stood inside to wrap chain and pull the offending 4-foot diameter boulder out with the front-end loader. So I'm probably making a bigger deal out it with your situation than what it is. Hopefully your dies are designed to flip, when the bottom half is worn flat. Look close at the bottom, to see you haven't worn the die past to where you are crushing against the mild steel base support. Rebuilding with electrodes and a hand grinder is a b__ch! Best Regards, and Stay Safe! ))
