You know, Steven, mad respect to you for being so respectful about all of this. It is so incredibly frustrating when you see videos of people going to other lands and cultures and laughing about how 'gross' and 'werid' the food is. Like, yeah, ofc u think its weird and gross, you're not used to it, you don't think other people see us eating cows and cheese and think "what the fuck"? Loved this video. With my family we lived in China for almost 4 years. The durian in the market!!! Ahhhh. What a smell. It's somewhat like jackfruit being grown in Konkan region of Western India and the region which you have visited looks like Konkan. breath taking with beautiful surroundings. Nature has blessed them with bountiful of fruits. As the gentleman said, trees are grown by grandfathers & fruits are enjoyed by generations. Hope this green patch remains unspoilt... Hey steve, nice show and very kind of you to introduce durian to our western friends. May i just add in some tips hopefully our western friends can overcome the overwhelming smell in the first time. The taste can be simply divided in to 3 types, sweet, bitter and both. I would advise first timers to try the sweet one as its more acceptable by the taste buds.I did this to my American collegue when he came to Singapore and asked to try the durian. He was enthusiastic at first until he smelled it, I told him, hold your breath and put the durian in your mouth ,Do not chew or swallow, just compressed the fruit with your tongue and upper part of the mouth and let the taste explode, think of it as a custard or thick yourgurt, savoured the sweetness of it. He finished the entire durian although he claimed that its a bit 'rich' in taste. hahhaha..... want to know the trick to open the durian and get rid of the smell after eating it? First ,look at the base or the butt we used to call it here in Singapore. you will see a 'star' like lines where a few of them joins together. Follow the visible lines up towards the stalk or stem, that is the cue and clue to tell you how the durian can be opened up. It can be pry open just with a pen if you know how to. i ususally do it with a flat face screwdriver. Just poke through the point where all the lines joint together at the base, twist it towards where the visible lines are seem, when its pry open, you can just slide your thumb on the lines and the shells will open up. After eating, do not throw the shells away, take one of the shell and go to a running tap, let the water runs inside the shell and you wash and drink off from the base of the shell, all the smell will be gone. One more thing, if you are worried about getting too heaty, filled the shell with some water, spill a little bit of salt in and drink it. Greetings and best wishes from Singapore.

yeh penang durian is very outstanding . when i were a little my dad was a durian farmer we only plant very good durian taste , if he taste the durian not good he will cut it and plant new one . some of the durian was 100 years over and some still taking time for the harvest and my dad past away many many year ago. in my village in balik pulau was a durian famous durian farm what making balik pulau durian is famous is because old folks only plant good taste and its plan uphills . that is why this place produced a tasteful durian varieties .

Have u tried durian in d Malay traditional dessert? It's called pulut durian, it's sticky rice eaten with durian with a splash of coconut cream, it's like how d Thai eat sticky rice with slices of mango. We also have 'pengat durian', durian cooked with coconut milk n palm sugar, n it's also eaten with sticky rice. Perhaps u did try some desserts made out of musang king durian like ice cream.

Thanks. I've never been a fan of Durian flavoured foods. I learned that they often use chemicals to get the taste and I have found it disappointing and sometimes just not nice, so I tend to avoid them.. but I am still happy to try..👍🙂

That's super expensive Tess, there is an air of mystic about the fruit which keeps the Price High. I was told it's because it has a short Harvest (4 months) but I did not include that side of the story as I think that is nonsense, All fruit has a short Harvest, Apples don't grow as the seed is planted, not peaches or Strawberries. It's a fascinating fruit but the prices should never get like that. Hopefully you ca try it one day.

I've had a durian milkshake before to me it taste like a mix of mango garlic onions with a hint of juniper. There is an Asian Market in town that sells durian and some day I will buy one and try it straight up. But as with any fruit nothing compare to eating right off the plant.

i believe that's the case. durian needs to hit the ground to complete the ripening process, so that it can be consumed almost instantly. and the slight numbness on your tounge can only be obtained by eating a freshly dropped durian

not sure if its overated. But try it once and decide for yourself. Very expensive now, but its quality is high and consistent, otherwise you got ripped off. Also get it in season and not before or after. You dont wqnt to buy it when its going bad or too expensive for first harvest.

@@Steve-Owens i believe some people think MK is overrated mainly because it's way too expensive just like Black Thorn. other than that, MK is without a doubt a solid & consistent durian. with its attractive yellow colour, thick flesh & the trademark bittersweet taste, i think it will still continue to dominate the market for many years to come.. at least for another 5-10 years.

Durian tastes very much like the odorant put in cooking gas. It contains a "thio" chemical compound characterized by a sulfur-hydrogen bond (SH group), which chemists call a "shit group".

Durians are way too expensive. Consumers are conned. Vendors should sell by opening the durian fruit and then putting the seeds into a transparent plastic box or even a styrofoam box and then weigh from there. That would be fair, otherwise consumers are just paying for the husk for nothing. Remember, here the consumers are absorbing the cost of seeds too. At RM60 to RM70 per kg, durians are too pricey compared to say a kg of good rice which is only RM6. Moreover, sometimes durians can make you sick. Beware!

iTelephone 8 is it not easy to harvest a good quality of durian, try planting yourself how very challenging, time consume and lot of resources needed and knowledge needed plus it has its own season. Have you seen durian tree grow in lab?, best quality is grow at the hill side. I been there helped my late grandpa manage small durian ochard less hilly, mostly only 40% can be consume , only 20% can be sold as good grade. We took a lot of afford in growing and maintaining the ochard. If it very easy to maintain such as rambutan or watermelon ..can be harvest any season sure can be sold at cheaper price.

@@idhamnasran Crude palm oil estates or for that matter those of small holders are also very challenging, time consuming to manage and require a lot of resources and knowledge too. Refined palm oil which you use to cook is going for like maybe RM2.50 per kg and the plastic bottle is included. Good quality rice is also only going for around Rm 5 to 6 per kg and both these goods are difficult to plant and manage too. Rice comes nicely packed too with prints to give you more information. I am protesting that at the very moment a consumer pays for the durian the husks are of no use at all and the seller immediately throws it away. I am also saying that because the buyer is absorbing the costs of the durian seeds already. If you search youtube videos, you will see an old man who told his assistants that there was a durian peak but he wanted the buyers to pay more. Sure you can get rich but I am thinking the Government should step in for such items too before the sellers run it up to cause inflation in this country. You would know by now that even the Black Thorn is sometimes about Rm100 per kg. Sure if a person can afford it, pay then but then I think it is the sellers who are playing the market because at about 1 am in the morning, there are still plenty of durians unsold. How do the sellers play it? I am not sure but throttling the market is one day, lying about supply is another.
