Deng and his successors were responsible for China being the economic powerhouse it is today with economic reforms, enabling China to join the WTO, opening up trade to west and welcoming foreign investments. China fostered good relations with other countries, there was a cultural exchange with foreigners coming to china to work and to visit, and chinese people going abroad to study and live. Things started changing when Xi wrested power... he's taking China two steps back to the Mao era, promoting nationalism and ideology(Xi Jinping thought and his own little red book). Clashes with other countries are more frequent now, public opinion of China in other countries is down, anti-foreigner sentiments are being pushed by the CCP/CPC, foreign cultural influence is being clamped down. I think he's trying to control the population with propaganda(50 cent army) and censorship. I'm concerned about what he has planned for China and SE/East Asia.

I am an expatriate in China since 1998. While I am not big fan of Mao, but people need to remember not only he brought the country into unity again, but he also laid the foundation for Deng. From 1949 to Mao's death, the countries life expectancy increased from 38 to 65, that's more than double the improvement in the world during the same period, that's equivalent to hundreds of millions of lives saved. Illiteracy rate dropped from 80% to 25%. He established social, racial and gender equality. Most Mainland Chinese regard him a hero with flaws, which I find more appropriate than him being branded a demon by people outside of China. This documentary also failed to mention that Tiananmen's Incident has a part to do with funding by the CIA, very much like the Hong Kong riot in 2019. More soldiers were killed than the students. Today, if we ask the Mainland Chinese the single person that they hate the most, one name regularly pops up, Chai Ling, the student leader who took money from the CIA to create the movement. She was as notorious as Li Hong Zhi, the founder of the Cult Fa Lun Gong.

What should be emphasized is not internal conflict but external aggression, which gave rise to the pursuing internal conflict. Westerners do not want to confront this reality. The formation of the CPC has been the response to this external aggression.
@ChnesRep中華民國OfTaiwan3 жыл бұрын
the formation of the CPC was a good example of forieng power collusion with the aim to overthow the Chinese nation. CPC could justify its existence better should it respond to Japanese external aggressions during the WWII by actively participating into combats and protect the country. Unfortunately they didn't intend to but focus on growing their organization and military power during the war time. I wonder if intenal conflict doesn't need to be emphasized, why on earth the annual stability maintainance budget is at the same level as the China's defense budget? Isn't China a happy society without much conflicts?
@woodensurfer3 жыл бұрын
@@ChnesRep中華民國OfTaiwan The creation of the CPC had been in response to foreign aggression, without which there will be no CPC at all. That the Soviet had became much friendly, less racist, toward China after the Bolshevik Resolution had been an additional factor. China's cultural weakness only became salient and obvious to the Chinese as China suffered from foreign aggression, even as the struggle over cultural change could well be regarded as internal conflict. The first emphasis should be on the cause, with the consequences to follow.
@ChnesRep中華民國OfTaiwan3 жыл бұрын
@@woodensurferyour comment is just too abstract, not coming down to the earth. Just Explain to me two things: 1. where does the hammer and the sickle come from in CPC's emblem, is that genuinely from China? (Compared to KMT whose emblem from Lu How dong and the ideology coming from Dr Sun yat sen) By foreign aggression, is that Japan or what? Hasn't that been a present continuous since 1840 at that time? Read the CPC 1st national congress history, it was meant to be the Soviet's subsidiary in China. So this isn't a collusion with USSR? It clearly violates the national security law if it's today. 2. Why is the stability budget so high. Where is the instability if it's been so successful as CPC has been claiming.
@woodensurfer3 жыл бұрын
@@ChnesRep中華民國OfTaiwan First, I have just told you that the Soviet after the Bolshevik Revolution had became much more friendly and less racist to China than Czarist Russia. Second, a symbol is just a symbol of a certain facet; it does not need acceptance in totality, regardless. The Soviet was the only power that had aided China before the onset of WWII, for China it was 1937. The US backed the anti-republic establishment. It was not perplexing that Sun Yet-sen had warm feeling toward the Soviet. The Soviet, unlike Czarist Russia, was a new friend by the triumph of socialism. This is one reason why socialism has been viewed as salubrious--by association. Then one should not forget the Soviet war against Japan starting 1945, after which Northeastern China, aka Manchuria, was returned to China. War-lordship is a kind of internal conflict that had been common in China throughout history. How it could have ended should not be expected as revolutionary, while the fervent embrace of socialism should be. What is instability? I don't know what you are referring to, but threat to territorial integrity is one source.
@ChnesRep中華民國OfTaiwan3 жыл бұрын
@@woodensurfer ah! So you are not a Chinese resident? Sorry for not providing the context then. You probably don't know that the Chinese administration nowadays is accusing almost everything of collusion with foreign power and external entity influence and considers these national security threat. that's why I keep arguing the CPC itself ever since its establishment was a collusion to threaten the national security for the Chinese government back then. I am arguing to Chinese people that you can't just keep finger pointing but pretending the Party is already great, glorious, and just. Two, regarding the instability budget. The Chinese administration hires millions of people to censor their citizen to an extent that it is on par with their expenses on defense. Just search for "China stability maintenance budget"

My personal dislike for KMT was their leader let Rape of Nanking happened. The soldiers trapped the Chinese civilians inside to slow the Japanese down. The nationalist soldiers wore civilians clothings to escape. They did the same thing in Taiwan with White terror. Anyway.. I asked this question and got some great responds. See the source for the credits. Can anyone explain to me why KMT lost to the CCP with only a few hundred members? Philip Ting: US supported the nationalist during China independence war because it allow Western colonial power to continue to own the land and businesses. They lost the war despite having overwhelming fire power and escape to Taiwan. The communist won because they were supported by most of the Chinese people as they were impoverished. Taiwan is still a colony of US. Maybe an autonomous colony. DG CU-T: The generals of CCP were more united and won several decisive battles, where as KMT was relatively corrupted and internal conflicts among different fractions only exacerbated the situation. The "evil CCP" depicted by the western media occurred probably 20 years later after the civil war; the warrior who slaughtered the dragon become dragon itself. Michael Zhang: Before ccp, there was a party called KMT that was corrupted and plunged China into poverty and civil war. Come here to China ask any elders beyond 70 yrs old hows their life before ccp. You'll know how grateful they are. (Yes I'm telling you from my personal experience because all the elders in my families love ccp.) Yin Zhen Yang: kmt has too many faction infighting, its run by ex noble and big landlord families. In a country consist mostly farmers and peasant and drought, feminine run wild. Every soldier u train potentially coming from poor rural farmer family, the vision of a country where everyone were equal, every fortune are share, is.way more attractive that fighting for the landlords whom doesnt treat u like a human. Basically kmt is in the situation of every collapsing dynasty, overthrow directly or indirectly by the peasant or farmer uprising. Source kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3TcnZmPZ5afabs The fact is the economy was destroyed before CCP took over. Go to check what ROC did in Shanghai. The commodity price are rising every second, even university Professor’s monthly wage can not afford one meal. Further information you can go to check the results of the first 5 years plan and first 3 years plan. -Chaos Andy China was in deep poverty ever since the Qing Dynasty lost the Opium War and robbed by the western powers through treaties. KMT's corrupted government brought China into even deeper trouble. When KMT retreated to Taiwan, they transported hundreds of ships of gold with them hence China was basically valueless. CCP was left with nothing. -Jeff H If you're still reading, check this out. Chris wallace: Mao became a leader for the Chinese peasants by sheer grit, at a time when they took on both the brutal Japanese occupiers and the self-serving business elite (the Nationalists). Americans are appalling ignorant about China during the difficult years (1930's-40's). The US foreign service in China at the time (a highly competent, knowledgeable and professional group of civil servants) recommended that the US support Mao but the US government turned them down, kicked them out of China and replaced them with an inept but politically responsive legation that supported the Nationalists. This led to a freeze on Sino-US relations for the next 20+ years! 神州 Shenzhou: Mao Zedong saved China, he transformed China from a weak and divided country into strong and unified one today. When Dr Sun overthrew the previous Qing Dynasty China and established "democratic" Republic of China (1912-1949) China was divided into several areas, we lost control of Tibet, and various warlords ruled different parts of China and even Japan invaded China twice during this weak period of Chinese history. Dr. Sun tried to get help from the Western powers, but they laughed at the thought of China copying their democracy. They even gave away the Shandong province (which had been occupied by the Germans during WWI) to Japan, instead of returning it to China (even when China was part of the Allies during WWI). In the end, Dr. Sun died without ever realising a unified China under democracy. But then Mao Zedong came along, and he accomplished what the ROC could not, and reunifed China under communism, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949 and Tibet was finally returned back to China in 1951. If not for Mao Zedong, China today would still be weak and divided country, fighting among ourselves, instead of the strong unified country we are today. The CPC had 600 battles vs the Japanese and kmt. A lot of brave soldiers lives were lost. You're right in the sense, that a wise benevolent and immortal dictator is inherently more effective in getting things done for the good of the people compared to democracies - even the ancient Greek philosophers and Niccolo Machiavelli also attests to it though they also recognise its catch. As unfortunately, the only one whose CV matches those requirements is God, as Man is inherently flawed, where even the best of us makes mistakes and we aren't immortal to perpetuate such wisdom. Hence, democratic systems inherently lends itself to better governance (but not necessarily all the time) as it allows for greater checks and balance, and allows the citizenry to choose the best person to lead them in the direction that they wish to go (even if it's a bad one). Hence, like authoritarian regimes, democracy sometimes messes up when the majority makes bad choices especially when bitter pills need to be swallowed, but that's the inherent nature of choice. It should also be noted that not all "democratic" nations implement democracy well and have well functioning governments. On a side note, I think part of the rapid rise of the Asian Tigers was because we fast tracked the entire industrial revolution phase. Back when the Western powers were industrialising, they were still working on the R&D of the steam engine and globalisation wasn't that big a thing yet, so things were moving much slower.

The USA has never been a responsible world nation....it has been a profit-orientated nation that has shown little respect for human rights and democracy in countries it exploited or controlled. China may be authoritarian but internally it does have exchanges of opinions and democratic processes within the party. The western popular democracies are not like the original ideas of western democracy which was restricted to a minority of the population, only gradually it was extended to women and to people without means. If the group or party in power has integrity and shows good governance some of the elements of modern western democracies may not be important. A serious weakness of western democracies is that the voters generally are not very competent in what is necessary to make a country prosper but are easily influenced by misinformation, distortion of facts, media coverage, and single events. Also, it is basically impossible to make very long-term targets for future development. In reality, different interest groups seem to be the true drivers of the "democratic" process in the western democratic model making it nontransparent and maybe de facto less democratic than China.

And worst, even make up lies about other countries, and then go in and kill their people destroy their homeland. And you westerners call this a "responsible" behavior? How would you like it if China does exactly the same way as America when it becomes the world leader?

Images of starvation showed in this video were taken during the war with Japan in the 1930s, not during the 1950s. The Cultural Revolution was the biggest mistake the then Gang of Four inflicted on Chinese cultural heritage. It's time to rebuild what was destroyed during this period.

42:20 I think prof. Wang has made a wrong assertion that the American way is "liberal" and "rule-based", while the Chinese way is "authoritarian" and "China First" and "non rule-based". First of all, China has proposed the idea of "shared human destiny" and not "China First". China will set up a rule-based order too, not unilaterally like America did, but with the rest of the world; and then follow the rules too, not the self-exceptionalist way like America. America way is "liberal"? Sure, it's liberal in the way that only America itself can write the rules, interpret and manipulate them the way it likes, and puts itself above these rules. Other countries have no say in writing the rules at all. And you call this a "rule-based" world order? You have to wonder, whose rules are these?

Unlike other ancient civilization, Chinese sustain five thousand years and expect to continue, there is one very critical characteristic, the ability to domesticate foreign invasion. Various religions entered China and absorbed Chinese philosophy, various ethnic nations invaded and conquered China and naturalized into Chinese, various cultures entered China influenced and merged into native culture. Communism is the same, it entered China in the era of civil unrest and poor needed a push to rise up; however once the incentive is gone, Chinese soon modified the doctrine to their style. Today China is basically operating the same as empiric dynasty, same way of electing government officials, same political culture, same governing method, same Confucian based thoughts and same deep rooted Han center traditions. The only thing communism left is the name and the some propaganda slogans. Communism in China has long died along with Mao who never believed in communism in the first place.

Not bad but fails to mention multiple points for China. First is the fact that it’s high growth was heavily supported by an oversized housing bubble, second is the aging population and low birth rate, third is the destruction of the Environment through industrial pollution of water sources. Fourth is the Chinese governments “wolf warrior” diplomacy, which involves basically insulting other countries for no reason and then inciting nationalism by making it seem unjustified. Fifth is the ccp aggressive expansionism, which includes claiming the entire South China Sea as its own, contradicting international agreement that it is international waters. Is this enough to prove that this is pretty heavily biased towards China. If not, you can continue with the Chinese government failing to uphold its promises such as democracy in Hong Kong. Let’s not forget the ccp actively trying to create debt traps for other countries in order to gain land and resources from them. Is that enough yet?

I don't see how the Chinese CPC's increasingly alienation stance towards the West will help her further her position and agendas on the international stage. In fact China is making a big mistake! In late 1700s, Qianlong did the exact same thing, by refusing to allow the free exchange of trades and ideas with the West, barely 50 years, China was already on the brink of collapse. The only way China can move forward is opening itself up more to the West, more relaxation and reforms of Government policies and ideas, and gradually introducing more democracy because the Chinese society has become more sophisticated, intelligent and able to make informed decisions about their collective future. This is what China needs, not an authoritarian regime governed by an authoritarian who refuses to leave, wants to be leader for life, overstays his welcome and frequently making threats to the West like a frightened animal. Learn from North Korea! It doesn't pay to be engaged in long term conflicts with your neighbours because China isn't self-sufficient and there are many things that China needs from the outside than it wants to admit.
