It is just trying to show that wedding cakes nowadays are extravagant. Modern wedding cakes are often theme based and are trying to be unique and individual, like reflecting hobbies or the characters of the couple. Though I am admitting that the 2016 cake here may be not the best example to actually show and reflect that trend...

I think that in recent years the 'naked cake' has become very popular as a return to more simpler old fashioned rustic styles. It's where the cake has no icing covering it and is normally decorated with real flowers.

People in the depression couldn't afford a big wedding, but cakes were inexpensive if you had a place to make them. Even then, the cake was often served at a small reception directly following the ceremony. This kept the costs low.

Part of the high cost of wedding cakes is labor. The more elaborate or intricate the decoration, the higher the cost. The 30s version is very Art Deco in design, streamlined and simple (compare it to that of the 20s). Much less work for the decorator and less cost for the couple.

Em, I work as a waitress for a country house that hosts weddings, as well as having a restaurant and tea rooms. Anyway, I have NEVER seen a cake like the 2016 one in the year I have worked here. Probably most common is not a smooth, stiff fondant like icing but a cream one with horizontal ridges. These often left plain or are adorned with real or edible flowers.
