Although it may not be the most cost effective thing, you could always put a thick layer of clear epoxy on the inside or outside and sand it down a bit if you're worried about the cracks bringing water in. Should seal up any potential leak hazard.

Awesome project! I built boats for almost 2 decades. First thought is to get a grinder with a chainsaw wheel thats used for log carving. second thought is that the cracks are from the wood drying and shrinking. It will do the opposite when its soaked. Most of the cracks will swell and seal. this is what we do with wooden ships. If they are on the hard for long they dry up and gaps open, and before we send it off we soak them for about 3 days to a week to make sure she seals up nicely. Thanks Ayo

Don’t worry about all the cracks, just buy a bunch of uv resin and pour it over the finished boat, leave it in the sun for a few days rotating it, so the resin cures and it’ll hold it together and make it waterproof too 😉👊🍻

This is very interesting to watch. You're probably going to need an adze and/or draw-knife. The adze is meant for what you were trying to do with the pick-axe in chipping out the inside. Next time you have a log like this, you could try getting it milled and build a plank hull. Good work so far! It's always interesting to see how much difference just one good piece of equipment can make to a job.

Dig this project! I think if you used boat epoxy to fill the cracks that might help. Total boat loves doing sponsors so you could probably get it for free. Also dont torture yourself just use the chainsaw on that bad boy lol.
@robertzalnis3162
@robertzalnis3162 5 ай бұрын
cut slots about 2 inches deep across the inside of the log with the chainsaw about 3 inches apart and knock out the pieces with your pick. it should co pretty fast. as far as the cracks just tar the outside with some hard setting roofing tar. If you leave that log as its current weight it will not float that well.

You definitely need to go to harbor freight and buy a chainsaw grinder blade. It's what they use for wood sculptures. I think it would remove more wood than the planer. Also, check out Xyla Foxlin's videos for some cool handmade wood kayak builds.
