Saw Shirley and Dolly Collins do this at the Bristol old Vic a few hundred years ago. I for what it is worth I am delighted by your interpretation which I have many times repeated.

A spirited live version from 10,000 Maniacs who do a fairly good job, as ever, of an English folk song. There are many versions around but if you get the chance make it a quest to hear the version by UK folkies Barry and Robin Dransfield before they parted company. IMO the definitive version. It used to be on KZbin but sadly appears to have been taken down.

Happy Mayday! This was a great & special show, part of a three night stand for Hope Chest, a compilation of their earliest indie records.

First! I miss the Maniacs with Natalie, but they are still good with Mary Ramsey. Thanks for uploading this, 16111948!

I was there at this gig. Gutted to have missed John and Mary (who in 2015 are now back in 10,000 maniacs) who I think are one of the most underrated bands ever. Should have been as popular as 10K M "the clouds of reason " is sublime and as good as anything that the Maniacs ever did

Went to one of the Maniacs benefits in 97. They talked to the fans after it. Except John, who was sitting in a chair on stage. Guess he was tired, but He was the one I wished to talk to. Went up on stage with a chair, plopped it down in front of Him & was asking Him questions about home recording studios. Hell of a nice guy!! They sounded great & I'm disappointed They never really achieved the Fame They rightfully deserved....

@@leehope6948 In the UK they were were reasonably successful selling out medium sized venues. But the band lost momentum after Natalie left in the mid 1990's.

@@keithbate9405 I agree, however Natalie's lyrics fell asleep after around 1987. Don't know much about that Alternative Rock phase, but the songs She wrote between 1981 & 1985 were absolutely unique. I just wish she stayed along the same lines. Mary was a great replacement, even more musically talented, but Nothing will replace those teenage-library lyrics that Natalie wrote in earlier years. Don't know why the critics just label Them as Folk. Guess it's out of style. Hope they keep going.

@@leehope6948 Natalie's early folk tinged music was greatly influenced by the British folk rock pioneers Fairpoint Convention esp when the late great Sandy Denney was in the band. Personally I like all the albums that 10000 Maniacs released. But I consider "In my tribe" (1987) to be their greatest achievement. One of those albums which is a full of great eclectic songs like "my Sister Rose", "the painted desert", "Don't talk" and my all time Natalie /Maniacs track "Verdi Cries" Incidentally John Lombardo and Mary Ramsey were also hugely influenced by Fairpoint Convention and Sandy Denney.

guess that this tune and lyric would bring tears to the eyes of John Keats

@@joemcardle7728 I am aware of those two points. But I am unclear as to why a tale of a sailor meeting a young woman by a river - they have a roll in the grass, the women gives the sailor twenty pounds telling him if they meet again she will give him more, the sailor promptly departs to a pub spending the money on booze and women with his shipmates - would bring Romantic poet John Keats to tears. Unless, that is, they were tears of laughter.
