I stop by this video every year on the anniversary of his death. Thanks for uploading this footage. This song means so much to me.

I have been of Phil for about 40 years and I not only still love his music but love it even more today.He was just so special and honest.Such a trajedy what happened to this great man.Thank-you Phil for all songs and your dedication to so many great causes. Your music got me involved in many of your causes. I became an active anti-war and civil rights advocate.Your songs opened my eyes to so many things. Thank-you so much Mr.Ochs for all you did.

I love Phil Ochs. Just watched his 2010 biography which is available on Netflix streaming. He has been a source of inspiration to me my entire adult life. I will miss him always. Phoenix. Of Blue Phoenix Radio and themuseslair

First time I ever saw this video and I think it really is one of the saddest video's I have ever seen.I became a fan of Phil Ochs,and got to see him once,when I was a teenager many years ago.But this video ,to me,is so sad because it seems like Phil thought there were really no more songs as he was singing this.Miss you very much Phil.

Wow. That's an incredible story. This thing is great - a music video from Phil! And his last recorded song - great song. Thanks for posting.

Such, such sad lyrics, especially where it sit's in Phil's discography...the last song of his last album, and then him eventually taking his own life.

Lostislandboy said it seems Phil is singing to us from the other side and after many times watching this video that is a feeling I get also.It is eerie,sad and beautiful all at the same time.What a treasure Phil Ochs was and still is.Because the very things he wrote about are very prevelant in 2013 if not more! But for some reason the government felt he was just to dangerous,carrying around a guitar and all, so in my opinion they killed or had him killed.Love and miss you Phil. Peace

What you are listening to IS gold. Anything by Phil Ochs is. I wonder where this footage was filmed? I'm absolutely fascinated, I'd love to find out more about it.

Was wtg to go onstage when news of Phil's death came.(I was known for "Love Me...Liberal.") The backdrop for the stage, was a HUGE flag... Changed my whole set to only Phil's, began w/ "Liberal" & ended w/ "When I'm Gone." As the last strains of the latter drifted off, a *gasp* travelled thru the audience. Only later I learned the brackets holding the TOP of the flag had given 'way & the flag *slowly* wafted upside down--into the "universal distress" symbol. (Just got chills,'member'g)

Incredible! Thanks. Never saw this before. One of my favorite songs ever. Sean Penn should've done an Ochs bio-pic.......now he's too old.

Well now, I'm only nineteen. Guess you're not the only [Phil] Ochs fan under forty (40). Also, I do not have the best hearing, so I can't catch everything he sings here. Still a great song! On another note, just from reading the title I think of "Bye, Bye Miss American Pie". A resemblance could possibly lie somewhere. Lastly, We always need more poets!!!

You should be informed if you do not realize, the man with the stethascope is John Byner, allways up to antics on the show in his name. Oh yeah, great footage of the man "Phil Ochs".

@VJ254 I know, I feel exactly the same way! I listen to his music all the time and I've been working on collecting all of his records because I've grown to prefer listening to his songs that way. I sometimes can't believe the lyrics he would write because he seemed so ahead of his time. Something just clicked between me and his music and I wish he were here today still writing songs...

I swear to God I have, like, a spiritual connection with this man. Like, all the stuff her did and said, including all the stuff that made no sense to anyone else, I got it. I mean even the crazy stuff where he changed his identity and everything. I just totally get what he's coming from, and I guess I'm being sort of esoteric and conceited to say, "I'm the one who gets Phil Ochs." I'm sure there are others. It's just, how often is it that you meet someone who had all the same problems you had, same thought processing, same temperament, same heroes, same goals...reading his biography always makes me shudder because it feels like I'm living in an alternate history where I killed myself instead of surviving all those attempts I've made and getting better, etc. I don't know, man. It's weird. It's also cool how all of Phil's fans seem to be over the age of 40. I guess I'm the only teenage girl with a crush on a long-gone folk singer who was beautiful inside and out -- most girls my age are more interested in brainless boys with six-packs. Oh well. But it is cool to see all these forty-something guys and chat with them. Really. I actually get along better with guys old enough to be my father than I do with anyone my own age (like Phil, I had hardly any friends growing up). If only I lived in Greenwich Village, maybe I wouldn't be so damned lonely all the time. One last thing -- it always baffles me that Phil was a socialist! I always felt he was too perceptive and intelligent to be a socialist (sorry, I'm a libertarian -- the one thing we don't have in common). I mean I can't say I'm surprised that he identified as one but I find it hard to believe he was as banal as that. Of course he wasn't Dylan -- he actually took a stand instead of floating off into space -- but I always felt that in spite of everything, he stood on his own soapbox. He was unequivocal and uncompromising. Anyhow, commies, capitalist pigs, fascist Republicans, anti-American Democrats, flip-flopping moderates (love me!), we can all enjoy a damn good artist like Ochs and hey, it brings people together, and isn't that what he was all about? Bringing people together to celebrate a cause greater than themselves? Anyway, enough with my rambling. Phil's songs are just as powerful today as they were 40, 50 years ago. A real shame that he isn't up there with Dylan and the Beatles as one of the greatest artists of all time. Have a nice day y'all. Oh, and of course. RIP Phil Ochs.

I’m probably 6 years too late but I’m 15 I have six pack lol but Phil was writing bangers or what I would consider a banger, I have read up about him and it’s sad to see his progression to suicide through his songs especially this one
@rachelzack44794 жыл бұрын
lol I mean I’m still on this acct but I’m not a teenager anymore 😂 I think I was...17 when I wrote this? I’m 23 now. Ngl when I read it now it’s pretty cringe but the general idea is still the same. I got into ochs at 15 too; good on you, zoomer, for keeping the tradition alive into the next generation.

Probably intentional foreshadowing. Phil most likely felt that life was already a dead loss at this stage. Thanks to John Byner for putting Phil on his show. Does anybody know if this actually made it on tv? Phil was pretty much blacklisted from the American boob tube.
