Interesting. I can't imagine these songs or this conversation being allowed on modern TV (not because we've progressed beyond it, but because it would be considered too controversial, ha.)

Hats off to Tex McCrary and Phil Ochs for being able to have a civil conversation on topics they likely disagreed with more than agreed, Tex even ended the conversation by stating the importance of Phil Ochs’s songs to Americans.

During Vietnam I ran a laundrymate at Fort Mc Cellan. Soldiers would bring in their first week laundry ,but they would never come back to pick it up! I made more money off the unclaimed laundry than I did off the machines! There were a lot of desertions! Young men did not want to die in Vietnam! It was a crazy war!

Yes, hats off to both Phil and Tex. Their conversation was civil ending with Tex saying Phil’s songs were important to Americans. Phil’s words are full of truths and have meaning today.

I had the pleasure of singing with Phil's brother Michael. We were standing online, waiting for a store to open in Soho. Michael was ahead of me and he turned around. I thought he looked familiar, and mentioned that. He said that I might be confusing him with his brother...Phil Ochs. I was a HUGE Phils Ochs fan. When Michael heard that, he burst into The Marines Have Landed on the Shores of Santo Domingo. We sang it together ....in remembrence of Phil.

This TV appearance by Phil Ochs on Murray the K's 1968 talk show "The Sound is Now" is new to me. If you're a fan of Phil's, I think you'll enjoy it. The other guest (war correspondent Tex McCrary) says a few odd things about race and music, but his anecdote and remarks to Phil at the end are surprising.

He was a courageous man.Right now the same thing is happening, in that any poets with guitar in hand are shunned for singing truth. I believe he would still be alive if he hadnt been nearly killed in Northern Africa.Assassins ruined his vocal cords and he never sang as strong as he did. This led him to depression and alcoholism. There was no one better than Phil Ochs when it came to writing topical songs.

I spent my teenage years listening and learning from Phil. He motivated me to fight against that horrible war and the criminal draft. Imagine that you’re 18 and will finally graduate high school but what next? The draft prevented us from dreaming and planning on would be be next. I miss him so much. Luv ya Phil, RIP.

CBS made Dylan a superstar, even though Dylan couldn't play and couldn't sing! At the same time Phil was banned and considered controversial because Phil sang the truth! Phil was a victim!

Yes indeed. Phil Ochs declared “The War is Over” well before John Lennon even imagined it. Phil’s suicide was a major shock. Ironically, Lennon’s murder would occur shortly thereafter.

Phil might have been walking a thin line between law and lawlessness but he was right in the end. Cannons of Christianity is a weak song melodically and Phil has so many better ones. Tape from California, When I'm Gone, Flower Lady, etc. The Bible is trash. Religious people believe in a fairy tale and they or so often sanctimonious and caustic to non-believers. The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. But most religious people have no idea why this is true. But god is worse under Jesus's time when moral people with little free will (most of who we are is from deterministic causes as science knows) will find themselves in eternal hell. Hideous. Worst than the reckless god in the Old Testament because now we scare everyone into obeying and following for fear of their lives or rewards or punishment. I know you don't follow or have any defense or you will just ignore that Jesus is evil, so similar to Allah. Jesus supported slavery and knew nothing of Germ Theory! OK, I see, he was keeping all scientific knowledge of the future to himself because "god works in mysterious ways" though usually in ruthless ways. Tell me is it worth it all? I marched to the religions of the world so long and they must have killed about a billion or more. I guess religion gives one false hope and that's good in a way but it creates division among people and the Muslims want to kill Infidels, just as Christians wanted to during the Spanish Inquisition.

Your a wacko, I knew what I was before I was saved, I know what I am now and who I owe my salvation to. The one that shed his blood for me, and not for me only , but for the sins of the whole world. I pity you.
