@@skyoom1I wish you and other riders would stop promoting trail braking so much. It’s not a realistic technique for most “non-track riders” who spend their time on city streets. Trail braking wasn’t meant for city streets. You’re taking almost every single corner way too wide, crossing over the yellow line nearly every time, while relying on trail breaking to save your skin. Literally, you’re relying on one single technique to keep from sliding. I already said it in another comment but look at your speed before the slide. You were doing 50 mph with 15 feet left before the turn. You started letting off the acceleration way too late thinking breaking would be fine. When you slid you were going 43 mph. Not a ridiculous speed, but when a half a second earlier you were going 56 mph, that’s just too fast on a semi wet road, to be relying on trail braking. I’m not trying to get on you. You admitted it in the video. And I’m very glad you and your GXSR are ok. Just consider talking about the negatives of trail breaking as the primary method of cornering in the city. Remember, a lot of new riders are going to emulate you and they’re are going to be dropping their bikes left and right when they try this. The other thing is concerning yourself with “chicken strips”. Who cares?! Seriously. City riders are not going to be doing 50° leans around every corner in the city. It’s not practical when you’re sharing the road with cars who just use roads to go to the store. People look up to you. The city is not the track and new riders need to know this. Ok, glad you’re well. Sorry to preach. Off my soapbox now. I’ve been looking for a good time to say this and this was it. Take care.

@@TheSteveSteele I say what he is doing is not trail braking, more like late braking. He is not getting on his brakes early and trailing off. Another problem I see is him using using all 4 fingers for braking. Canyonchaser has one covering that.
@TheSteveSteele6 ай бұрын
@@sk8moto He did attribute sliding the bike to trail braking at some point in the video, but you could be right. He didn’t use the clutch but he rolled off the throttle, so technically you are right. My main point is that I don’t like when channels promote trail braking to beginners. It’s not an appropriate technique for novices riding on city streets where the speed limit is 35 mph. Imo, it should only be used on tracks or by experienced riders who have good control and balance. And even then, in the city, with tight turns, bad roads, cars and bad drivers, it’s not an optimum technique. Again, just my opinion.

I've been seeing videos of a lot of experienced riders going down lately, so the message it sends to me as a newer rider is that biking is much more dangerous than cars, and it's much easier for things to go wrong, so always double up on the margin of safety and gear up, especially on cold and rainy days. Also, even when you are seemingly doing everything right, something can still go wrong, so never make exceptions when it comes to wearing gear because it will be that one quick trip to the store up the street without gear that becomes the day you fall off the bike. Thankfully, you always wear your gear, so no major injuries resulted.

It’s a common misconception that bikes are more capable than cars, but that only applies to acceleration and top speed runs of liter bikes. 2 wheels will obviously never be as stable a 4 wheels much bigger contact patches on each tire & no leaning involves so even a loss of traction that does happen won’t as likely be detrimental
@kvernesdotten6 ай бұрын
@@X11CHASE Oh for sure. Go to any track that allows both cars and bikes, and I guarantee you that the track record is held by a car. Motorcycles have the advantage of extreme weight to power ratio and being a fraction of the cost, but cars are inherently more stable and much less likely to hurt you if something should happen in the first place

@@drumhopttv I wouldn't call it an excuse at all. When riding, you have to be aware and understand the risks. It's more of a mindset to have, like "dress for the slide, not the ride". It happens, people drop their bikes, even the guys at isle of man. Some people may never crash, some may die tomorrow. Sometimes its out of their control, sometimes it could be rider error. Which this video demonstrates perfectly. Point is, yeh, crashing is common, light or severe. I think bringing this to peoples attention is a good thing, not glorifying or normalising crashing. But bringing awareness that there's always a chance it could happen to anyone, anywhere. We just need to mitigate that chance.

Glad you weren’t hurt man. I call those types of crashes, “ the universe looking out for you”. Because obviously it ALWAYS sucks going down. But it’s literally almost good thing to have every so often. I know for me in my experience. USUALLY 1 of 2 things happen when I go down. -1. Get too comfortable, and that feeling when you haven’t gone down in a while can be very sneaky and comfortable. ( Basically being too comfortable is literally a gateway for many other bad things to be in combination with, which then in combination creates accidents. *1.2. Being too comfortable again, but this one is allowing your thoughts to be to consumed with a bunch of stuff that it shouldn’t be at the time. Combined with being too comfortable, usually is allows this to happen in the first place. -2. Pushing your skill level (which is a big role in how you get better and become a better rider) In doing so you will sometimes anticipate there not being as much dirt/sand/debris in the turn, when you should be anticipating it being there ( especially in certain areas) Of course there are many different ways accidents can happen. Just out of my literally countless crashes on and off road accidents. I find these 2 things are the most common reasons why the accident occurred. *( I’ve been riding dirt bikes since 4-5yo, street motorcycles since 17-18. Like actual street legal larger motorcycles) I ABSOLUTELY KNOW I can go down any time and NEVER think to myself that I have full control of the situation. I do have control of what I do, but never have full control over everything in this world/universe. So I always try to just be ready to react or adjust to. A lot of being able to do so in a reflexive manner is solely from experience, pain, practice. Good videos man, thank you. Sorry so long. lol. Just wanted to share my 2 cents on going down with. Also, I disagree with how you feel about front tire loss & im beginning to develop some new ideas about it. From your experience, the experience of the example video, & my own experience, losing the front happens so abruptly that I think we do a disservice by attributing it to rider error. I’m not saying we don’t fuck up cause I definitely did & im willing to bet you’d say the same for yourself. But, when losing the front it’s easy to not know why at all. Yes, you may have trailed longer than you should have, but I don’t see a difference in your pressure during the lean & it almost looks like you were standing the bike up when the front folded. It almost feels like a zone probable accident cause we have seen people lean more, use more brakes, & complete the turn. I fell cause my lean angle was so small my brain didn’t recognize I was slightly on the side of the tire when I added brake pressure. I didn’t think I was leaned over enough to fold my front, but that’s exactly what happened & though I’m inclined to take blame, it still doesn’t really feel like my fault & this makes me weary. I can’t see you committing egregious acts & the wheels still slides, but some idiot counter balancing at highway speeds keeps his bike up somehow… I’m in the rough stages, but I want to understand the front wheel fold, why it happens so abruptly, & if there is any thing that could be done outside of slowing down. Not that slowing down isn’t important, just that it’s too late to take that action in these types of crashes

At the end of the day I am just happy that a fellow biker survived a crash :) stay safe and love your videos!

Skyoom you are wrong about what trail braking is. Do not brake into the corner, that is going to overload your front tire. Get all the deceleration done before turning in but gradually release the brakes through the turn. Trail braking is not applying more braking during the turn. Trail braking may allow you to apply brakes in a turn because it does not disturb your suspension as much to increase braking if you already have the brakes applied vs applying them to begin with, but increasing braking into a turn is not trail braking. Hopefully this is clear. Trail braking is gradually releasing the brakes through the turn instead of fully releasing the brakes when you turn in which will pop up your front suspension and now underload your front tire. The goal of trail braking is simply to be smooth when releasing braking pressure so you do not disturb the suspension mid turn. You crashed because you were braking into the turn.

i see his finger is hovering on the lever but i can't see any pressing on the lever. Where is the trail braking

Repeating your nonsense here, eh? And then you feel insulted when people say that you are wrong. Well... you are wrong! Skyoom's right
@literal_lee6 ай бұрын
@@46rrodriguez He has 2 fingers on the lever, and most definitely rolls off and applies the frontbrake. It's not like a custom bike that has 70 degrees of throttle rotation, bud. Maybe 2 degrees at that speed.
@SushiArmageddon6 ай бұрын
@@literal_lee why are you being so aggressive? I literally took a class on trail braking yesterday. Why don't you let Skyoom speak for himself. Adding brake pressure into a turn is not trail braking. Reducing brake pressure throughout a turn instead of suddenly releasing the brakes as you start your turn is trail braking. If you disagree them please explain why instead of just insulting me. If you can't manage that leave me alone.
@SushiArmageddon6 ай бұрын
@@46rrodriguez he literally said he "trail braked" too deep into the corner. I took this to mean he was adding braking into the corner which is not trail braking but it is why he crashed. You can see he is decelerating after he is already leaned over.

Looks like you didn't brake hard enough prior to the corner, continued increasing braking while heavily leaned over, the frontend was unsettled by the crack and you didn't correct because you were multitasking. Good to see you weren't seriously injured and the bike didn't seem damaged. Thanks for the video.

Could have been a gravitational wave, you never know! The funny / ironic thing is you were narrating a vid explaining how not to do stuff like that, but hey shit happens. I have little 1/8" chicken strips (on rear) and I intend to keep them because I ride on sketchy roads and my XSR900 suspension is crap and I'm old and don't want to go down. ✌

Glad to see you’re OK and riding 2 days later 🙏 My 2 cents, may be, in order to be right, your gf did spread some gravel in the turn, waited for you to wreck and get away, then removed the gravel so that the road is perfectly fine when you came back 😂 All the best to you! Nothing stupid nor to be ashamed about.

Ironic how this video comes up after the previous one. Props for owning up to it, i can imagine what it feels like to have that happen to you as you are trying to teach other people. I'd never be able to think and speak like that while riding so sporty. What it feels like to me after watching it a few times is trail braking was the missing ingredient. The road also being sloped? (can't find the word now, not a native english speaker) gives you a false sense of confidence as it straightens out once you come out of the corner, effectively making it be like adding lean angle.

Doesn't have the right concept of what trail braking is. His bp was just bad, he has the same bp on the ktm as the 1000, more cheek off the seat and more chin to the mirror. Tries to come across as experienced yet has little experience (on SuperSports) is the reason for this comment. Thumbs up for posting.

Glad to see you are OK. One of my thoughts here is that recording a video while riding at that level removes a good bit of your concentration on the ride. I'd bet if you had been just normal riding and not recording we would have seen a different result. This is one of the reasons that even though I sport tour I never listen to music when riding, it seems to decrease my concentration. Yep the road could have been cooler, damp or whatever but your level of concentration was definitely down. AND you were very lucky in this outcome! On the street I just refuse to wipe away chicken strips without a 1/4" to 1/8" spare, save that for the track where there's ALMOST nothing to hit.! BTW I'm 70 now still riding and have been riding road since age 15. Still on a 1000SX Kawasaki.

to me, a guy was only few months riding, it just looked like you went in a little bit hot. You said you are very familiar with this road, id say maybe you just got a little complacent and zoned out for a moment before setting up the corner. perhaps the road was a little moist yet and still a bit cold. who really knows lol. we come across these peculiar incidents all the time. Its a good reminder to be on the look out at all times.

Oh man that sucks! Glad your okay. Yepper, you were hitting those corners hot. I thought the one before was going to be the low side you were 50-45 mph in the outside lane during the trail braking. The low side you were 53-44 mph on the inside lane a much sharper turn lane to be in. It is good a car was not coming the other direction around that corner too. Great channel, thanks for sharing!
