I've been considering taking the night train up north for ages, just never get around to it (it's kinda expensive after all, plus the stay in the north and maybe car rental etc and trip back home) I grew up traveling A LOT in the far north of Scandinavia, traveling around by road (caravan vacations), so the far north is my childhood stomping grounds XD I live close to Gothenburg so it was quite the journey too. I've heard a lot of good reviews both old and new when it comes to our Swedish sleeper trains, they're known for their comfort and facilities. When I was younger and before everyone had computers and internet with them all the time, the sleepers from Gothenburg (yes, they started in Gothenburg back then) to the far north, even had a cinema car on the train! What surprises me the most about this video is that you went to Luleå instead of going all the way to Narvik! You honestly missed the best part of the total journey as the views are absolutely stunning once you get past Kiruna and head into the Kiruna mountains and the train tracks are very close to the tall mountains and you can see the highest peak of Sweden at times, have a view over Torne Träsk lake and then some amazing scenery once in Norway. It's such a beautiful place in the mountains, I've travelled to Narvik both my train and car, though by train only from Abisko, Björkliden or Riksgränsen (small but rather famous locations in the mountains for skiing or hiking) I'd even go as far as saying Malmbanan (between Kiruna and Narvik) is the most scenic and impressive piece of railroad we have in Sweden, and it gets even more scenic once crossing the border to Norway. Narvik is also the northernmost town you can travel to by train in Europe, or possibly even the world

Lift integrated into the coach: I recently travelled by train here at home (Canada), and rode one of the newest trains VIA operates. On the way to the platform, the employee was telling me about the new integrated lifts, and he was speaking as if they were the best thing since sliced bread. When we got to the coach, they had to go get the manual lift, since the integrated one wouldn't deploy haha To anyone reading this and who needs a lift to get onboard: I am not writing this to discourage you from travelling. I was able to board using the "old fashioned" method, it was just funny to see the employee be so enthusiastic about something that, on that day, turned out to be out of order.

A small tidbit that might be worth it for you especially. If you travel with SJ most of the larger swedish stations has a small lounge area that is free (only seen Malmö and Stockholm Lounge but I think there is one at least in Göteborg too). It is almost like a lounge area for when you are flying. You can get free wifi, seating, electricity at your seating, basic ammenities and at least in Stockholm Central you can get some small finger sandwiches and juice. Not worth to purchase a ticket just for that, but first class does have some nicer seats with electricity wider width and even complimentary breakfast if you travel before like 10 in the morning. Well worth it and I think not enough people speak about it because their ticket prices are not that bad for first class. When I traveled Lund-Umeå a lot I think I often paid only 200 SEK extra on a ticket that cost like 1200 SEK anyways. Of course this was often off season and I booked well in advance but still. Very worth it. Not seen any train entiushiast channels talk about this yet and I think its honestly one of the nicest parts about traveling by train within swedish borders.

Honestly I dont see how you could see those extremely steep prices for the tickets as good value. Especially considering that before VY took over the contract, SJ ran the trains and offered much lower fares on the same route. The increased fares have also caused much fewer people to take the night train and instead opt for flights to get between Stockholm and the far north. Thankfully Vy's contract is being terminated early and SJ is taking over once again by the end of the year. I just hope it means the lower prices will be reinstated. Paying nearly 100 euros for couchette compared to the 70 euros it was when SJ operated it 5 years ago is criminal. Not to mention 70 euros was the most expensive it got, purchased last minute, not the starting price! A standard sleeper could go up to 160 euros but could be sold for as little as 78 euros all the way from Stockholm to Narvik!
@JiggyGinJoints

And don´t forget how Vy completely manhandles the train. Never clean, always late, no food or water, broken toilets and cancelled more often then running. And of course late when it runs. Vy and the norwegian goverment who owns Vy should get invaded for this.

I don't think I'd ever ride a train for fun. It would always be an ordeal to be endured. However, if I was traveling, I could imagine it might be the least bad option. Both in comfort and affordability. I don't like to drive in foreign countries so it could be more comfortable than driving. It could also be affordable, avoiding the need for a rental car and a hotel room.

I got lucky as I was able to have a vacant seat next to me but my mates that didn’t had a way worse journey than me. On the way back to Stockholm we had to switch trains in Boden and our seats were occupied so we got a free couchette upgrade from Kiruna but they hadn’t changed duvets so we couldn’t sleep in there and it was pretty dirty overall. It just shows how far the U.K. railways are lagging so far behind with a total lack of real innovation and vision - as a wider overhaul of the current SailRail product offering, an overnight sleeper train from Hull via Leeds and Manchester Victoria to Holyhead is needed - or are they really waiting for the high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin to get built first? Perhaps the plans by the Irish government to comply with the EU climate change directives and ban all short-haul flights between Europe, the U.K. and Ireland will be a good thing and a blessing in disguise, if it means better rail and ferry connections between Ireland and the U.K., including if Isle of Man Ferries decides to offer direct sailings from their new terminal in Liverpool to Dublin

Another great video apart from the overuse of that ubiquitous USA born term "super" in front of verbs. Best to vary with words such as really, very, amazingly, incredibly, exceptionally, extremely etc etc etc. Super is lazy and just gets repetitive and is dumbing down the English language. I find it super annoying ;-)

I travelled from Hamburg to Stockholm last summer. The train was over 7 hours late. In fact, all but one of our Scandinavian trains were either very late or not running - I'm not doing Scandinavia by train again!

Never had that experience, only time ive experienced a significant delay was when a snowstorm hit together with a freight train derailing. 3h delay. I take long distance trains basically once a month in scandinavia.
