I’m writing this description from a caravan park whilst taking shelter from the rain, but Iuckily no sandflies this time around! This is our second episode of the series, and begins in Mangakino and follows our journey all the way to Wellington.
A huge thanks to the volunteers that allowed me to video them - and of course for all their hard work! The Timber Trail has been one of the highlights of the entire trip.

This video is a wee bit longer than the last but hopefully its still entertaining - just let me know if you have any feedback or questions!
And please subscribe if you’re enjoying the adventure and would like more videos!! 🥰

During camping do you need to lock your bikes? Do you have any issues with people stealing?

We locked them most nights and we didn’t have any issues (thankfully) but have heard stories of people having their bikes stolen 😬😬

Hi Great Video! I have a question about your bikes and the Timber Trail. What I have read is that you are advised to have a MTB with some form of suspension. I am hoping to do the ride on a gravel bike (which I don't own yet BTW :). What are your thoughts on bike requirements for that particular part of the ride?

Thank you! We did the Timber Trail on hard tails, but we did meet a guy on a gravel bike so I think you could do it on either 😬

Enjoying the videos. Riding in NZ is on my bucket list. Trail magic getting the chairs, fire and beers from the farmers!

dumb American here... I've seen in a few NZ bike videos now- folks just drinking water right out of streams.... is it safe with out purification or boiling?

Great question, we drank straight from rivers if we were either at altitude or somewhere remote! If we were closer to towns or farms we would always boil it. I’m not sure if everyone does it this way but we had no problems ☺️

Not surprised you guys enjoyed it so much, we Kiwis know we are really lucky to live here and you guys have a great attitude. I biked the same course with two late 60's mates in 2021, but we did the gentleman's version with good accomodation and meals every day and my wife driving as support crew, so we're pretty impressed with you folks who rough it! We were rapt with the whole trip, but the Timber Trail Day 2 history tour was a real highlight.

Thanks Seager! It’s such a great trail, would 100% do it all over again. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did ☺️

@@_kayleighbrown We enjoyed it so much that we did a South Island version in Feb/Mar this year, biking the back country roads and trails from Bluff to Nelson, same format. We thought we were pretty tough until we met a bunch of cheerful walkers in Geraldine who had started at Cape Reinga in October and had “only 500km to go to Bluff”. We also kept passing Sounds to Sounds riders (hard-case bike-packing maniacs) at various back country locations, a lot of them women and a lot of folk even older than us! The first rider we passed was the legend winner from Christchurch Joe Nation, who could even get a podium finish in the 4600km Tour Divide 2023 at his current progress. There’s a whole strata of bike-packing maniacs (including you guys) out there, and it was so cool passing and meeting them!
