100A Continuous 200A Spike PWM Speed Controller for Trolling Motor

In this video, I review a 100A continuous draw and 200A spike PWM speed controller for use with a trolling motor. I used a Minn Kota 12V 45lb thrust trolling motor for this test. The PWM worked as it should and was very quiet during the testing. This PWM should allow for the use of larger lb thrust trolling motors which tend to fail with the 60A continuous and 100A spike PWMs. The PWM is listed in the parts section of this narrative.

I have been using this for 3 months almost daily now on a 55lb Newport. It's on an 11ft Zodiac inflatable. I put it in a project box, I added a fan directly on the heatsink, and another fan to move air in the box. So far I didn't have a single problem with it and I ran it for about 20 min at 35A continuously. I have a temp probe installed and it went fro m 28C ambient to 32C on load, which is perfect. If anyone is interested in the components: there are 2 channels, one for fwd and one for reverse. For each channel, it has 2 relays with no inscription on them (they look like 80A each, so 160A per channel), 2 flyback STPS41H100CG Schottky diodes (80A per channel, which seems undersized), 8 mosfets STP75NF68 (80A each). The Mosfets have proper gate protection. The 8 capacitors are 470mf rated at 63V. As a tip for anyone, I am using an APC propeller (10x5LH) instead of the stock prop. My speed increased from 3.9mph to 4.8 mph, while the max amp draw dropped from 48A to 34A. It's a huge battery saver. There are some videos on youtube with tests for speed and amps. Anyway, about the speed controller - so far so good, seems like a well made board.

ok i use a Minn Kota 12V 55lb thrust trolling motor and 100AH battery. I have melted the board on 3 of these 100A continuous draw and 200A spike PWM speed controller in less then 30 mins running time. What is the best sound proof way to go from here.

With a 55lber you don't have really any other choice than another PWM.

I will give my 12v 56lbs 24v thru my PWM 70A that is in the mail... more volts and less A, and maybe give the motor max 900watt insted of the 620w it gives now ...

Great vid, that thing should be able to handle the larger motors some of us like to run. I do wish you had done a amp compare at the end with and with out the pwm.

So I just got into the kayak fun. Have a minnkota 50 thrust. I’ve tried 2 of the pwm 60amps so far. They work great at first but after 15 mins they start smoking. I have racked my brain trying to get this thing to work so I can use it. Using a 12v lithium battery. Both pwm I’ve used was off Amazon. Do you think this would work for what I’m pushing? I’m no electrician by any means. I was wondering if it the trolling motor was pushing to many amps for the one I had. The pwm I ordered all had bad reviews. I’ve searched for answers for 2 months now

The 50A max is close to the max draw of the unit. The PWMs have quality issues at times.

I have removed the circuit board from the metal enclosure and place it in a plastic box. Then I added 2 fans in the plastic box, besides the fan that it already has on the heatsink. I was able to use a 62lb thrust newport at maximum for extended periods of time without the board getting hot. Actually the original poster here has a video with a box with air flow - this pretty much what I did, except I added 2 12V fans that suck air out of the box - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nImZp5poipKKZtU

I have this same PWM that you have For some reason, mine is hooked up correctly, but it’s not responding I tested the trolling motor. It definitely works. Battery is good All wiring is brand new connectors are securely tight Red light will come on with fan If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it Thank you Great video by the way But it will not respond to the trolling motor or vice versa If you can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it

Thanks. Normally the pot has an on/off switch, this does not.

The potentiometer has a built-in switch. So after you turn it down to zero, keep turning and it will switch off. The separate button has 3 positions: forward, off, reverse.

This potentiometer does not have a switch. That is why there are only 3 wires to it.
