That Spooner High School shop sounds really fantastic. When I was in high school, I did metalwork and we only had lathes, a shaper, bench grinder and a forge from memory. I don't recall a drill press, but there may have been one. Nothing like what SHS has and will be having. Good on them for having such a variety of good equipment for students to learn on. That's great that you are donating more tools for them.
@tetedur3775 ай бұрын
It was what we call now "middle school," but back then it was just school. We had metal shop and we had wood shop. We had a forge, a stick welder, and an ox-accetalyne setup up, and that was it. We could learn to stick weld, cut, and braze, and that was pretty much it.

Well deserved 100K award.. content and ways of working as presented represent the realities of a working machine shop. The other high cost item for any machine shop is Metrology ala measuring tools and assuring they are measuring to reference standards. One single out of cal measuring tool can ruin/scrap a pile-O-parts. Folks new to venturing into starting a machine shop tend of focus on the machine tool often not realizing the cost of tooling and cutting tools which are consumables and measuring tools can easily adds up to FAR more than the cost of the machine tool.

I'm surprised to hear that the Spooner high school doesn't have more shop equipment. In the 1960s when I was going to high school, the school shops were very well equipped, mostly with government surplus equipment produced for WWII. Machines had brass tags stating that they were still owned by the US government and on loan to the school. This was a way to make certain that there would be people to operate the equipment if needed like they did in WWII.

Congrats on 100K subscribers! I hope it's putting a little jing in your jeans. +++on tooling costs. Mr. Pete told me years ago as advice to a new apprentice that you should if you can but another tool you NEED every payday. I would add, try to buy HIGH QUALITY tooling and avoid the cheap stuff. I have found that you can often find the good stuff gently used at a fraction of the new price. Last thing, buy high quality tool boxes. Don't waste money on the cheap stuff, you'll regret it. as a hobby machinist the tooling is the most expensive part i agree i will always say that a tool made by the big american name brands that cost 235 bucks same tool from china 9 to 13 bucks i will always feel the american manufacturers are extreme price gougers i know thw quality is much better and i would always rather buy american but i have both and ive been using chinese turning tools that are over 30 yrs old with no issues the inserts are the key but you will never get me to believe if china can make the tool for 10 bucks there is no way the american companies cant make and sell the same tool for 30 to 40 bucks and make a profit and at 30 to 40 bucks many more people would spent the money with the american companies but at 250% higher us middle lower class just cant justify it same goes for starett and other machinist tool manufacturers they can do better but they are all greedy the vernier caliper you bought used should cost about what you paid new but i know some will disagree but i worked for industry and i know what kinds of profits american companies make 2 examples a loaf of bread you buy for 3 or 4 bucks only cost the manufacturer 6 to 8 cent to produce and the bag cost 5 cents or ladies panty hose they are abour 10 cent to 15 cent according to what packaging is used so i know a little bit about cost to make verses actual selling prices

BS, tooling collects along the way, getting a working, not worn out machine that makes good parts, is the hard part.
@TopperMachineLLC5 ай бұрын
I've been doing this 25 years, helped set up a few shops for other companies before starting my own. The machine is the cheapest part of the whole equation. Just try buying.measuring tools for everything you will need will break you. Just my boring mill, cost me 10x what I paid for it to add all the tooling and accessories.
@donteeple61245 ай бұрын
I 10000% agree with Josh, The machine is the easy and less cost part, all the incidentals and tooling add up quickly and absolutely easily surpass the initial cost of the machine by 3/4/5x...We've been doing this a longggg time, its BS you're thinking the tooling doesnt cost as much.......
