British garden centres have done really well. They've completely rebuilt Newton Regis by us, it was two greenhouses but it now has a two bay shop and covered plant area. Still a long way to go but the they're getting there. Planning permission for new toilets and cafe in place. Stalled by locks down. Cafe is very expensive though. But the meals seem reasonable.

Oh nice to know! I was so pleased to find that they survived the lockdowns. Cafes do tend to be a bit pricy don't they but then, i don't go to the garden centre to drink coffee. Just too oogle the plants. :D

Truly perennial kales were once less rare in Britain than they are now. Most have vanished from cultivation. One that has survived is Taunton Deane kale from the West Country which was preserved in the gardens at Knightshayes Court Tiverton in Devon. It is a strong growing plant which develops a woody trunk within a few years of planting and can grow over 2m in height in a favourable spot. A mature plant can provide plenty of good-flavoured, green leaves (with a purple tinge and purple stems and veins) throughout the year and these are replenished quickly after harvesting even in winter. It lives for five years or more and is best propagated by stem cuttings. Knightshayes Court is less than a mile from where I live.

I started my tomatoes but I always start them using the paper method. Wet some kitchen roll so it damp, pop your seeds in leave somewhere warm check after a few day, put in a pot when you see roots. Seem to have germination and don’t waste compost or vital propagation space. Do the same with peppers and chillis. Have you ever grown and got fruit from noire de cremee, I’ve tried for four years and haven’t got any fruit from it, I think some seed sellers sell it as Black Krim. I’m going for st Pierre, Alicante usual, then a heirloom cherry (for tray bakes)it’s a mixed seed pack. Ordered some new module trays 15 cell ones for small batches of seeds.

I sowed tomatoes today too. Not sure where I'm going to put them all... twenty-eight varieties! In fairness some of them can go in the back garden. Half of them are blight-resistant to some degree, my plan is to choose the ones that don't taste of cardboard and then have a go at de-hybridising them. I grew Cherokee Purple in 2020 and it was absolutely delicious, a good deep flavour and sweet without being cloying. It's definitely on my "grow again sometime" list! Just not this year.
@patriciahawkes3862 жыл бұрын
How do u de-hybridise them
@JessieatPlot372 жыл бұрын
Wow, thats a long process but would be amazing if you could! Glad Cherokee was a winner in your books, i'm so looking forward to it!
@artsyhonkerful2 жыл бұрын
@@patriciahawkes386 Save seed from the plants, then replant it. That's your F2 generation and they will be wonky. At that point, ONLY save seed from the plants with the characteristics you're selecting for. Eventually you will get a variety that breeds true. It's a little more complicated than that depending on the plant. Potato-leaf variety tomatoes cross with others easily, for example, so to save seed you have to isolate the flowers. It's also a lot more involved if you're doing something like carrots or parsnips that cross readily with wild plants, then you need to isolate them under netting but also make sure there are pollinating insects in there. (Plus they're biennial so everything takes longer.)
@artsyhonkerful2 жыл бұрын
@@JessieatPlot37 I'll let you know how I get on. Though at least one of the blight-resistant tomatoes I'm growing is already open-pollinated: Skykomish, available from Real Seeds.

I grew Brad‘s Atomic Grape last year and it is such a great tomato. It was one of only two tomato plants that did not get hit by blight. They’re so tasty and they hold well both on the plant and on the kitchen counter. In general I’m a big fan of Brad Gates (Wild Boar Farms) tomatoes. I grow several of his varieties. Cherokee Purple has been a standard of growers in my region (mid-Atlantic US) for ages. I grew it probably 20 years ago for the first time and it was a lovely tomato-smoky and rich tasting. My sister-in-law and I have been having discussions recently about how what’s being labeled Cherokee Purple looks very little like the one that we were used to growing over a decade ago. Both of us grew it again last year and both of us believe it is not the same. The tomatoes actually used to get purple shoulders or dark shoulders, sometimes a little bit of green as well, with the tomato itself having a reddish purple tinge. Now I’m not seeing that coloration. The tomato is much paler and doesn’t get those deep colorations on the shoulders. I’m curious to see if the Cherokee Purple you’re growing across the pond looks more like the Cherokee Purple I remember instead of the ones that I grew last year. Ananas noir is on my tomato-growing bucket list for future years.

Read that there are around 10000 varieties of tomatoes, never going to live long enough to try them all. I grew Principe Borghese for drying this year, they were good producers but I thought they were too small to use for a decent dried tomato, so I used my smaller Romas instead. Roma tomatoes were magnificent in Adelaide, Australia this year. I estimate about 50kg (from 10 plants) over many weeks so far. Tried Black Russian after seeing you grow them and trying them from a local market. Love, love, love them., definitely a keeper. Wish I’d grown more than two plants. Didn’t have great success with Tigerella this year. Hope your year is a good one.

You’re gonna love black beauty. One of my faves to grow. Great flavor. Brads atomic grape are fun to grow… I like them because they have a bit more structure.

Love your video adventures on and off the plot. Great MacGyver trick with the plant tab needle! I grew Black Krim for the first time last year and fell in love; it will always be in my garden now. I am also growing Ananis Noire after watching a gardening show last year. It also has a long growing season but it's a beautiful and hopefully delicious tomato. I will also attempt to grow 2 short season toms, Stiletz and Early Wonder, both under 60 days but still full of flavor. The last 2 are Curtis Cheek and Super Marmande, prox 70 days. Still pretty cold here to seed start toms until another couple of weeks but excited for the new growing year!

I love Black Krim too, especially when it's cooked. Did you know that the "Krim" part refers to the Crimea?

@@kerrydunbabin8380 Regarding to Ukraine? I did not know this!
@kerrydunbabin83802 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, Sherry. Can't remember where I heard it and forgot details. My geography isn't that good. When I think of the Crimea, all that pops up is the charge of the Light Brigade . . .
@JessieatPlot372 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sherry! Yeah, thats why i'm assuming Black Russian and Black Krim are essentially the same. They look identical in Photos and Krim is that whole peninsular. It wasn't a conscious decision to go with the Ukrainian version over the Russian but very timely!

Built a polyhouse to your design last year for a neighbouring plot, and like yours, suffered a little damage to door and window plastic, but other than that all good! Will build one for myself this year.

Fab! Yeah, i wasn't expecting the door/windows to last as long as they have to be honest. Got a few minor modifications to make with the new ones but basically i was happy with them!

Hi there 👋🏻. I have been enjoying your channel for a few months now as I’ve been learning all about growing from seed at home and I’m loving the videos. 🤗. I’ve got a question which doesn’t really belong here, but I thought I’d ask on your latest video. So I’ve been sowing seedlings gradually this month using John Innes seedling compost and things have been going well. A couple of days ago I sowed strawberry 🍓 and carrot 🥕 seeds using the same module tray, but sowing separately if you know what I mean. I have noticed that there are very tiny little wiggly bugs in the soil and am unsure what to do, they’re hardly visible to the eye and I haven’t noticed them in any of the earlier sowings. I’m wondering if they are in the compost bag and may have just hatched, because it is very wet after being stored outside at my local garden centre. Or is this quite normal? There’s a lid on this tray at present and I don’t want them to spread to other trays, especially as I’m sowing indoors. Do I throw the tray away and the compost and buy new? I’d appreciate your thoughts if you see this and have time to answer. Thank you 😊 Ps you always make me want a glass of 🍷 🍺 🥂🍸 😂

Did nobody else spot Danny Clarke in your clips from the show who co-presents Filthy Garden SOS on Channel 5? I had to rewind - I’m sure it was him sat chatting with some others at the table. 😄

Hey Jessie..Thanks for lots of good little tips there. Where did you get that nifty tubular net frame? The one over your broccoli.

Thanks for the update Jessie , Great as usual much appreciated , I am not planting my toms for another few weeks yet but wondered what kind of gap do you have between each one x
@JessieatPlot372 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim! I plant them quite close in the poly, about 35cm apart. that way i can fit a good number in but i do keep them very trim and upright. And only in a single row around the bed so they get the air flow.

@@JessieatPlot37 thanks Jessie , I am hoping to do something similar with my wilko greenhouse instead of using 1 pot per tomato plant I am going to replace paving slabs with a small u shaped raised bed , that's the plan anyway 😀, keep up the good work xx
