I love how Shirley is now singing it as, "She's trying to figure out if she's a girl or a boy." 🖤

Sophia Hawkins why does it matter if she sings he or she?

@@marmaladeplague6627, I think it was a concious effort to not erase who the character in her song is. Trans girls are often conceptualized by the cis gaze (just being matter-of-fact here, not being denigrating) as boys who want to be girls. Or boys who think they are girls. With that sort of conceptualization, you get a whole mess of "wannabe" and dissociation. And it goes beyond that intentional or unintentional violation of personal dignity, mental and emotional autonomy, and one's very self... It goes into justifications for violation of bodily autonomy. It matters a lot, probably more than Shirley even realizes, but she does realize and acts on it, and that's both important and powerful. Trans girls embracing who they are is so personally and socially important, and being regarded as they are by society (including Shirley) helps protect us from the dehumanization which justifies human rights abuses, a true visibility and then a protection which leads to the equal rights we deserve. It matters a lot.

It's weird to see your idols of youth get older, it just makes it worse when I realize I'm 37 not 14-16 anymore :'(

@New Rose no, obviously there's no way of getting younger (although that'd be nice sometimes)!! But often, on the treadmill of everyday life, you don't realise how much time moves on and things and people change. You often remember people (and places) in a certain way, particularly if you were close for a specific period and now see them alot less; and so when you revisit certain places and see those people, you might be shocked at how much things have changed. Which then makes you realise how much your own life, and life in general, has evolved from that time period
