Had the band switch connected mostly to L5 broken loose due to someone who was inside of tuner and reinstalled porcelain cone that holds L5 wrongly to circuit board which put weight of transformer/coil on wafer switch breaking it. The repair involved epoxy glue on wafer ,epoxy left to dry for 4 days. The switch was repaired reinstalled however wiper on both switches was wrong by 180 degrees so removed L3 and L5 and remove band switches again and rotate wiper 180 degrees so wipers match each others rotation . My repair was delicate should have taken more pictures but repair was successful.

I had expected to see ceramic switch wafers instead of phenolic in an antenna tuner intended for the 100 -200 Watt PEP class of transceivers!! Excellent video, thanks for sharing, de PZ1CD , 73

Ceramic would have been much better but to keep the cost down they used phenolic. It was a price war back then, Thanks

I purposely did not watch the 520 episode earlier because of my bios towards them.... But I now smile and thank the man upstairs for pointing here. As I mentioned before in my comments on other projects of yours, Your approach to these presentations are very inspirational. I was glued to my iPad with this one. The learning curve is pretty wide as it relates to radio. You make it look easy. Thank you. 73s

Thanks Pierre for following along on this. These are really great old radios and a lot of folks started their hobby with these and the 101's. I really appreciate the kind words my friend and glad you found it useful.

Excellent work Buddy! the wafer switch is no walk in the park, but when parts are not easy to come by, that is when imagination and creativity come in. "Well Done"

I like the way you work and troubleshoot. Thank you for posting this. I'm teaching an extra licensing class - I think I'll bring out a couple of antenna tuners, and see if the students can recognizer the type of networks used. You inspired me with this video.

Another great video. This is a very neat and compact transmatch. I didn't see a power jack on the back and I think it would have been neat for Kenwood to have that meter on the front lighted, especially for night time operation. I guess a good mod would be to put some 12 v. LED's in the meter case and fix some way to turn them on. To us who have been hams for 50+ years, it would be nice to see it! You know Harvey I was thinking the same thing about adding leds to the meter. Can power them from the radios 12 volt output connector. Think I will do that.

@@TheRadioShop You can power a few LEDs from a little rectified RF, if properly bypassed and filtered to avoid harmonic generation ....

Have you ever noticed it's always the wafer switches that's buried in the middle that always breaks. It's never the easy to get to one on the outside edge.

I have a kenwood AT-230 ,one of the plastic rods for the tune capacitor knob broke ,do you have any idea were I may find one . Thanks nice video
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl. I would have no idea where to find an original since that was a custom part. You may be able to find something to substitute it with like a plastic shaft from an old variable pot. Sometimes you can find fiberglass rods at craft stores that could be modified and used.

Very nice video. I plan to check the bracket fit to the bottom cover on mine, good thing to be aware of. I wonder of any old Kenwood parts radios might have an exact wafer in some switch stack? If so, maybe a perfect replacement could be done. Do you suggest any lube on the contact assembly such as the Deoxit type products? Thanks for the time to share this info on the older KW gear.
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jarit. Always a good idea to check the alignment of these brackets. Deoxit products are great. Another good assembly lube is G-n from Dow Corning. And sometimes silicone and while lithium grease is fine.

Appreciate the info and comments. There are several Deoxit products out there maybe. Will do some reading on them. Also good to know about the other products you have found useful. Thanks for all the good KW info.
