Hi Alex you have done a wonderful job restoring that mill. I also love the paint colour. You should be proud mate. That's going to be one great looking mill and I hope it gives you yrs of service. Just brilliant my friend

Alex obviously has his doubts, but we do not! Looks like you're doing fine work, and I can't wait to see the end product!

Must got posters of milling machines on the ceiling for Alex, he’s responding well 👌, keep up the great work.

The answer is High Tack by Permatex (well it's been my preferred method for more than 30 years). Spray a nice even coat on your gasket, wait a while and you have a nice sticky coating that keeps a gasket from sliding around and helps it seal. I concur with the other viewers, the voice over is preferred, it shows your character and livens up the video. Nice series so far BTW, enjoying it quite a bit.
@BurtonsAttic5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian! I have used high tack before and indian head; it works. Weather strip adhesive is an old mechanics trick as you can assemble immediately. Less about sealing and more about your gasket not moving. If you take it apart again in the future usually the gasket will stay on the part, like a water pump for instance making the block side easier to clean up. Never had an issue with it sealing as well. Thanks for commenting.

Great job. From what I understand those are great machines for the home shop. When it’s up and running you will have a nice mill
@BurtonsAttic6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it really is the prefect home shop solution. I don't have the room for anything bigger. It maybe slower or less robust than a larger machine but that's ok. I think they where mostly made for the US Army. That would explain the size/footprint and versatility. If anyone really knows let us know. Almost done with it!

Burton's Attic my Lagun is a beast for sure but I’m satisfied. It is much better than my bench one. AC in NC in the summer is a blessing in the shop I’m glad I have it

What a wonderful machine. Two ways for machining, I will look for one like that, horizontal and vertical on the same machine. I got a question here: How come there is no drawbar inside the horizontal tube to retain the tool in operation. Then the machine would have to be farther from the wall to insert the drawbar. Thanks for these so interesting videos, I store them in my favorites. And yes I did subscribe.

I noiticed the spindle a little bit tight, isn't it? U have to check the clearant of the bearing with feeler gauge when u tighten the nut. The machine look awesome anw!!!
@BurtonsAttic6 жыл бұрын
I just made it snug. Not to tight with zero play. The same way you tighten a 4x4 hub on a truck. It was actually much tighter when I removed it as I indexed the adjuster nut and the lock ring and lock nut. Should be ok. After it runs I will check for play again and change the oil (debris check). Tweak as needed. Thanks! It coming together, hard to believe the rusty turd I started with is looking as good as it does! I really don't think it was used much, it was just neglected in it's former life!

Wonderful job. Do yourself a favor and start replacing your snap ring pliers with Knipex brand. Not cheap but what a difference. Very neat and tidy gasket making. _Dan_

just discovered your channel and really enjoying this rebuild. what material are you using to make the gaskets? thanks

Thanks livinlos1, Fel-Pro 3157 good for sealing oil, coolant and gas.

Great work but just a point to mention is there meant to be a gasket between the halves of the gear box? I have an old AEW HORIZON vertical mill and was going to do the same and put a gasket in between but I found this was not done due to a gasket allows some movement and this can lead to bearing problems mine is just a bonded joint nice work though cheers
@BurtonsAttic5 жыл бұрын
It originally had a gasket and the case is pinned to the casting.

Too kewl... I feel compelled to ask if that light oil was all you used on those big tapered roller bearings though ?

By chance did you get any numbers off of the bearings & races? I have a horizontal that I am contemplating tearing down.
@BurtonsAttic4 жыл бұрын
I didn't document them Ed since they didn't need to be changed. From the video they are Timken and should be clearly marked with the part number.
@edschaar28684 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah I am not too worried about getting the bearing numbers, but if you had them I was going to source them ahead of time. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy seeing that horizontal in action ... has even given me some ideas on more uses for mine. I need to get me some more NMTB tooling. I mostly use mine for hogging out key-seats in shafting, so use the arbor and various cutters.

Congratulations to that fantastic job. Yes I do mean it. I have the same machine, almost the same, I do not have a horizontal mill shafts in my machine, it's an older one must have been in a school before because the table is drilled in it's pretty bad. Not having time,room and energy enough I just did the necessary work with tools I have, the faster I could because I wanted to use it. Some of the work is on my channel and some more will be up eventually. I was glad to see your derailed work as now I saw things same with my machine which I have not touched yet and unless I have to, I will leave all alone. I hope you will not work on this museum piece you made, Rockwell did not make it that well. Unfortunately these machines are still far from a real milling machine. Not rigid enough, you'll notice it. Nevertheless you did a remarkable le job, congratulations.

Tip for you ... when making your own gasket, use the round part of the ball-peen hammer to tap around the edges to cut out the gasket. :-)

@@BurtonsAttic plenty like these types of videos because they appreciate the effort or repairing or restoring on of these old workhorses. However, they may not know what they are looking at or why you did what you did. Voice over for me.
