Not sure if you caught onto this, but most of the super slow pitches occur when position players come in to pitch. As you noticed, the scores of some of those games were crazy. And when the game is that lopsided (and basically a lost cause), many teams will bring in a position player (non-pitcher) so they don't have to tire out their pitchers. Especially in periods where a team might have to play a ton of games in a row without a break, it's usually better to keep your bullpen fresh for future games. And naturally, position players aren't experienced pitchers, so their strategy usually consists of throwing nonstop "fastballs" and just changing the speed, because they usually don't have experience throwing curveballs, sliders, etc.

In most of these, when it's a position player striking out a batter, the batter smiles or laughs about it.. Or his bench makes a huge deal about it.

@@Starman_Deluxe very true... but if I were a MLB position player on the mound, I'd be way more proud of a scoreless inning... and a 1-2-3 inning would be as good as a perfect game! And getting credit for a win (it's happened more than once).... who cares if it's a meaningless stat????

@@DNReactsTo be fair most records are probably set with slightly inaccurate radar guns. There's some guys who are really consistent with their speed to the point that they can instantly tell if a ballpark has a "juiced" radar gun. That said the record before Chapman was all the way back to Nolan Ryan, who was measured at 105, and back then they weren't measuring every pitch so he may have had some faster.
@kcgunesq
@kcgunesq 7 ай бұрын
@@psymar And the location the speed was checked was different. Everything I've read suggest Nolan hit 108 using modern measurement methods.

The Big Unit bringing it at 98 for the last out of the game is probably the most impressive thing about this video. Considering that it is probably around his 120th pitch of the game, to be able to generate that velocity is amazing.

A lot of those slow ones at the end are positions players who have come in to finish out a blowout loss. You should find a highlight vid for Trevor Hoffman, Padre great and one of the best closers ever
@gregcable3250

Fastest pitch was by Nolan Ryan which was measured crossing home plate. The 104 and all those measured now are measured as they leave the pitcher's hand. Moreover, Ryan was not trying to throw his hardest as it was a pre-game pitch used to test up the radar gun that they used then. A physicist was able to estimate the speed of that pitch, again a pre-game pitch at over 108 mph as it left his hand--- as they measure it now. His catcher for that pitch said they Ryan threw harder than that in every game he caught for him. Ryan threw the hardest. 6 no-hitters says it all.

5:24 that's actually an outfielder on the mound, #19 of the Boston Red Sox was Jackie Bradley Jr. traditionally he was the Left Fielder. so he usually patrolled the area around the Green Monster.

Actually Bradley was the centerfielder, so he could patrol the largest area of Fenway, the "triangle" right of center near the bullpens with a 420 foot posted distance to the wall. Bradley also has a cannon for an arm and has been clocked at close to 100 mph on throws from deep in the outfield to cut down runners at third base and home plate.

Awesome choice of video guys! That was fun. You have to remember how the pitchers usually set it all up with fastballs and then use the same delivery to hide the change-ups. The odd thing is that the pitchers here didn't really disguise the pitches. Great fun. Thanks!

We are getting close to Spring Training. It starts on February 13th. You guys really need to react to the National League MVP, Ronald Acuna. His 2023 season, was one of a kind. He set several records, such as 40 Home Runs, and 70 stolen bases. You usually have one of the other. A lot of Power, but not a lot of speed, or speed without a lot of power. If Shohi is the best player, he is certainly number 2.

Great reaction guys. You will notice that a lot of these eephus pitches occur in blowout games. Often the team has burned through a lot of pitchers during the game and they allow some guys who is an outfielder but used to be a pitcher in high school, to come in and pitch to a few batters to preserve arms for the next game. Especially if there is a double hitter (two games played by the same two teams in one day.) We used to get more double hitters back in the 70's and 80's. I think them scheduled more of them to reduce travel expenses. But nowadays teams have so much money that they don't need schedule them anymore. I guess you're expecting a pitch in the 90's or faster and the pitcher throws you a 60 mph or slower, slider or curve ball, often your brain cannot process the difference in speeds fast enough for you to properly to react. It freezes a lot of batters and if the pitch is thrown for a strike, your made to look silly. You rarely see these pitches during a competitive game. I have watched a lot of baseball games over the last 55 years and I don't ever remember having seen one thrown. Probably because I am quick to turn off a game if it is a blowout. ♠

I am not sure why, but I've noticed that quite often the speed announced by the commentators is 1mph different from what is displayed on the screen. Maybe there is more than one radar gun and the one the announcers use is different from the one the stadium displays?

The funny thing is that when you see these big leaguers throw one in the 60s (heck, even pitches into the 70s) the pitch looks soooo slow and the pitcher looks like they’re just gently tossing the ball with no effort, yet an average-sized guy with average athleticism in average shape would have to rear back with every ounce of strength and effort they could muster to throw a baseball 60 mph, and even still they might not be able to do it. I was never super fast or explosive but I was a decent enough athlete and fairly strong, and the absolute hardest I could ever throw a baseball was maaaybe in the mid-60s. Of course I was never really a baseball player either (my last year of organized baseball was at age 13) , so I’m sure guys who actually played the sport through high school could probably put a bit more on it, but still. If you really want to see first hand, go step into a batting cage and take a few 60 mph fastballs from the batters box lol unless you’re a legit baseball player or one hell of an athlete I can guarantee that you’ll have to start your swing before the pitch is even on the way to the plate.
@psymar
@psymar 7 ай бұрын
The thing about those Eephus pitches is the hitter is timing their swing for the fastball because otherwise they can't possibly hit it. They adjust for slower pitches. But you really can't adjust to the eephus, it's just too drastic. But you can't start throwing it too much because if a good hitter knows it's coming they might just sit back and wait for it and smash a home run and then you look like a dingus

I've had the privilege of being able to talk with various major league players from the past 50+ years... Most I've asked say that they find it MUCH easier to hit a 90+ MPH fastball than a pitch coming in at 60-70MPH.. It throws their timing WAY off. When you're trained to react to pitches almost instantly (I think you guys did a reaction to a video about how hitting a 90+MPH fastball SHOULD be physically impossible... and if you haven't it should be next on your list!!!) you can't adjust to a pitch coming in 20-30MPH slower than you're used to.

Study the "changeup" pitch.
@LiveFromThePorcelainPalace
@LiveFromThePorcelainPalace 7 ай бұрын
@@areguapiri As a former pro pitcher, I know what a changeup is. The difference between a changeup and an eephus is greater than the difference between an average pitcher's fastball and changeup. A changeup is just a pitch that looks like a fastball when it comes out of your hand, but comes to the plate about 5-8MPH slower than your normal fastball. An eephus is deliberately throwing a pitch as slow as you can. Jacob deGrom, and other pitchers have had their changeup clocked over 90MPH!
@psymar
@psymar 7 ай бұрын
Exactly. They have to start the swing early to have a chance at hitting a fastball, and then everything else is an adjustment from there. Greg Maddux used to be able to tinker with his fastball speed, too, and almost nobody could tell if a pitch coming at them was a 95 mph fastball or a 92 mph fastball -- and every once in a while he'd throw one even faster at 97, but taking a bit off the fastball was a huge reason why he had so many complete games. But also the ability to change speeds of a single pitch is why even if you did hit the ball you weren't likely going to hit it very hard. "Except" -- to quote Maddux -- "for that *bleep* Tony Gwynn."
