Yes according to my personal conversation with management at Master ... the "ML" shape of the keyway definitely stands for "Master Lock" The ML shape of the keyway has an interesting patent as well .. It is registered as a Trademark or Service Mark ... The idea being Trademarks and Service Marks do not expire like regular patents of course. The K on the baseplate indicates a Master keyway, the cylinder for this lock is made on the Master side not by American. The side ball bearings allow Master to make multiple "Keyways" for different Locksmiths so their keys do not interchange .. there are a multitude of different combinations where the side ballbearing pins can be drilled.

Thanks for showing us the gutted core. I really expected better pinning.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
+Random I also expected better, but the lock is no slouch... it has the same pinning as comparable Abus products. Sometimes we forget how remarkable the pinning is in normal 1100 locks for the price point. That said, I struggle to understand why the downgrade compared to normal 1100s.

Nice video!! I was trying to work out the function of the dimple on the key , I finally twiged as you gutted and explained key control . excellent thanks for sharing....
@lockpickinglawyer9 жыл бұрын
+Tony Holt Thanks... passive pins like that really don't cause issues for pickers like us (except when they are put in nasty places, and block access to active pins during false sets -- like on some Abus dimple locks), but they are good for stopping illicit copies, and for making bump keys less effective and harder to make.

Thank you for the spp, it's nice to see that you hold the lock body.

+fat KoRn Thanks, and thanks for the sub. Shooting a well-framed video while picking a lock in your hand is surprisingly hard. I don't remember this video in particular, but when I try to shoot a video of a padlock in my hand, I usually end up shooting the video a couple times because I go out of frame.
@SilktheAbsent14 жыл бұрын
Huh. I just noticed that the actuator is horizontal, making the anti-bypass wafer that's shoved up in the body rather superfluous. Way to go, Master!
@brianhignett89548 жыл бұрын
Hi Harry, Been away for a week .... interesting comparison with the two " ML" style keyways. Not a padlock that we would see down here, but as you said the Lockwood appears a lot tighter. ML, could stand for Master lock, I guess, although I think it's probably designed to make altering existing key blanks to bypass this keyway a lot harder. Well picked ... of course. Regards, Brian.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Hignett Thanks. I thought it could be ML = Master lock, and had added that to the description... after all, this is a Master Lock keyway, adopted for use in an American Lock padlock. That said, I doubt they put that much thought into it. And the Lockwood is definitely a tougher keyway. I've spent some time on the Lockwood without any luck. It might be possible with easier bitting, but the combination of warding and bitting makes the restricted cylinder that you sent me VERY difficult.
@johnrich69284 жыл бұрын
@@lockpickinglawyer hello LPL, have you by any chance been successful with the Lockwood since this video?
@kdawson0202793 жыл бұрын
I have access to the 5570 with this exact core. Just a bit heavier. I was a bit surprised at how straightforward it is to open. The Master 410 still gives me fits, but the big American with the Edge core comes open rather easily.

American went downhill, change the keyway and then take security keypins out. very upset my favorite lock has gone to the crapper
@lockpickinglawyer9 жыл бұрын
+JB Not quite the crapper... it's still pretty nice considering other locks at the price point. But if this is any indication, its going downhill.

+LockPickingLawyer I just ordered a 2 new Americans that I don't have the big one you like and a steel one with 4 extra restricted keyways. $18.99 for the big one you like. good deal so I grabbed it. I will add wafers and a pin if I need to. should be here by early next week. a guy on ebay offers free shipping

My local electric utility uses American locks with this same restricted key way on large commercial switch gear. Not in 1100 bodies though. They use solid brass American lock bodies. I don't recall the series. I've always wanted to get my hands on one.

Playing with a series 1105 that's probably 20 plus years old. Got tired of popping my Master #3 open with a few rakes. So far I can't get anything to bind. So I'll let you know of I am ever able to get this beastie open. Lol. It's got a super tight core so I'm assuming it's definitely got security pins.
@jon_byler Жыл бұрын
I’ve got a box of these padlocks, and I thought maybe had the wrong key, as many were not turning properly. Turned out to be the lubrication had gone bad, and cleaning/lubing again made them open much easier. The cores do seem to have pretty tight tolerances.

Nice picking sir. I just picked my first American Lock A1105 gutted it & it had all serrated key pin /drivers. Got an A1100 Gutted it & found all standard key pins, all master spool driver pins. A1100 date code was May 2013. could the absence of serrated pins be from Master, Merging with American? sorry for the lengthy comment.
@lockpickinglawyer8 жыл бұрын
This core is from the master lock product line, thus the use of Master pins. American Lock cores still use the serrated pins

Do the ballbearings block a blank key (with no dimples) from being inserted? Or do they jam up against the thing that surrounds the cylinder and prevent the key from turning?
@realchicagophill5 жыл бұрын
How hard would it be to pick this lock from the bottom of the keyway. I got a starter lock pick kit and I've managed a master lock, a kwikset deadbolt (took forever), and a door handle but I can't get this A1100 open. The one I have has been beat on a bit and been weathered.
@kdawson0202793 жыл бұрын
Late to this party, but American locks tend to bind when you tension bottom of keyway by design. It may still work, cores are not necessarily standard even within a series.
@davidmorris64397 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "key control"?
@lockpickinglawyer7 жыл бұрын
Key control is the idea that you can restrict someone from making unauthorized copies of your keys by including unusual shapes or features into the key blanks which can only be obtained through authorized distributors. This is VERY important to business and institutions which must trust their keys to large numbers of people. Key control measures give them some confidence that when keys are returned by, for example, a departing employee, that employee doesn't retain unauthorized copies.
@davidmorris64397 жыл бұрын
That's an amazing explanation! Thanks!
@tamalodg1965 жыл бұрын
Actually there is a Meaning behind the Master lock version!! Look at the Key profile notice how it looks like a E for Edge! Plus look at how they spell Edge on the key, you will see the imprint of the word Edge the E design matches the profile. Yes that's the meaning behind the keyway!! Im pretty sure you know this by now anyways but was just adding it incase anyone wondered lol...

+LockPickingLawyer I just orderd some replacement cores from a locksmith on ebay, he had or best offer on 4 items with a hour to go so he accepted all my offers. he said they are restricted k7 k8 keyways whatever that means. getting 4 cores with a six pin key specified radical key bitting. is that a k7 or k8? I don't know

very controlled picking bud, nice! yeah a shame to take away the more difficult security pins and just replace it with a tighter warding, do they not know about us, we'll get in most things if given the chance?? if they want to emulate the ML they should have the tricky warding and populate the lock with high end pins too, i'm sure Lockwood have. very enjoyable, cheers ;)

The is no such thing as a restricted key way. With the proper machinist tools I can create almost any key blank that is restricted. Even accomplished this for Medeco "Sky" blanks many years ago. Yes they say its a one of a kind key way, custom made for you, you give them the number of keys you need and that's all you will ever get, no reorders. Confucius says, "locks only keep honest people honest, nothing stops the thief" (or a dedicated locksmith from providing his customers the best service). Keep up the great videos, always interesting!
