Arthur Morgan and all the protagonists from the GTA series (including all 3 playable characters in GTA5) could swim. John Marston can’t. For some reason Dutch or the people at the orphanage he was held in never bothered to teach him how to swim. But I think the real reason he can’t swim is because back in 2010, Rockstar didn’t want the players trying to go out-of-bounds map wise. They fixed this in RDR2 with you simply drowning if you go too far, but I guess Rockstar didn’t really think about it since aside from Red Dead Revolver, Red Dead Redemption 1 was the only real spaghetti Western they were making at the time. And in the GTA games, you could use a helicopter or a plane to get off the mainland. However helicopters obviously didn’t exist yet and planes were just invented a couple years earlier in 1903. Remember, Red Dead Redemption 1 is in 1911/1914. And Red Dead Redemption 2 goes back farther in time to 1899, with the Epilogue in 1907. And since RDR2’s Epilogue is set in 1907, planes existed but weren’t as popular as they are in RDR1. And obviously since the main game takes place in 1899, planes didn’t even exist yet. What I’m trying to say is, Rockstar simply didn’t think about having simple water transportation like rowboats or steamboats. Hence why both John and Jack can’t swim.

I love how you can interact with the dogs. However, i went to go fishing at some lake and came across a guy and his dog, He didn't want anything to do with me so i thought id go pat the dog. Wrong button. Shot the dog. Felt terrible. I was running with my horse through a bush and accidently ran one over. I didn't know I did all I heard was a whine so I went back to see what it was and the poor thing was laying on its side. I was away from camp for about 5-7 in game days when Charles found me and said he’d been tracking me for days cause Dutch was getting worried and then asked me if I would ride back to camp with him. I love the little details and hidden things you only get to see if you happen to (accidentally or not) do certain things. I have played many many hours of this game and this Charles moment only just happened many 100 hours into the game.

I recently got a trophy for running over 5 bunnies when riding a horse. This game has little ways to amaze us, even outside the story and the more obvious side activities. The best thing about it is that you really don't have to play through the story to enjoy it; there are so many other things to do. I got this game last year in December and I've yet to find something too bad to say about it. My only gripe would be that it wasn't released early enough for me to show to my grandfather who loved westerns his whole life. He passed before I bought the game and my first interaction with it was bogged down by those sorrowful feelings. RDR2 turned out to be the best thing to help me cope with my loss so it became a very special experience to me. Maybe it's a "gamer" thing that an ultra immersive rpg helped quell the grief but I'm not complaining. The game is fantastic so if you don't have it and really, really love cowboys and the wild west, you need to go ahead and get yourself a copy/download. *just a note that it took over 4 hours for me to download it on my ps4 so that's the kind of wait time you'll be looking at but it is WORTH IT *ps I'm the weirdo who's playing right now as they're watching videos just because the lone cowboy exploring stuff in the midnight bayou ambient music is quite chilling without other noise in the room #justsaying
