🎮 DESCRIPTION 🎮
This film tells the story of Red Dead Redemption 1&2 in Chronological order, while breathing insight into the meaning behind it. I have carefully weaved the story around a central thread and that is the break down of the Dutch Van Der Linde Gang.
A fair few narrative strands have been omitted or glossed over to clear the way for what I felt are the most important points.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Western-themed action-adventure game set in an open world environment. The game centers on Arthur Morgan, an outlaw and a member of the Van der Linde gang in 1899, in the waning years of the American Old West and extinction of the age of outlaws and gunslingers. The player controls Morgan from a third-person perspective. The game features both single-player and online multiplayer components. Among returning characters are John Marston and Dutch Van der Linde, the protagonist and an antagonist from the previous game respectively.

Same. I took care of my horse, feeding her every after a long ride, brushing her every time she gets the slightest of dirt on her. I even verbally apologize whenever I'm not paying attention to the road and accidentally ram her into one of the trees... When Arthur took his time thanking her despite the wild gunfight behind his back, it really broke me into tears. R.I.P Shadowfax (My Horse)

And Sadie, it would also be an horror watching a woman who suffered so much, most likely saw her husband get murdered, and still she rose as a new women. Even if fuelled by anger and revenge desire, she was friend of her friends. To Arthur, to John, to Abigail who helped her grieving, also having respect for Uncle, Charles and Jack although she had not a lot of interactions with him that we can see. Rain Falls surely died an old man, sad with life, but with some degree of dementia that didn't allow him to remind his past and his life as we would like if he had a choice; Tilly got married with a lawyer and both had at least a baby girl; I'm pretty sure Tilly somehow also got hands of some of that Blackwater money; Trelawny had a family (or more) of his own, reason why he had short reigns in the gang and was allowed to disappear during long periods. Of all the survivors of the Van der Linde gang, Sadie and Charles would be imo those with more chances to relapse to the outlaw life without help of some kind of emotional walls to support them and keep them on the path to their redemption. Jack is a mistery, but it's probably right he stop his lawless life when he shot Ross, the man reponsible for his father death and who knows the accelartion of Abigails death, surely mentaly destroyed after living for some years her dream of an honest life. Rockstar rulled with RDR1 and 2, manly 2 for because is set in time before RDR1 and still developers were able not to screw RDR storyline, on the opposite, they made an art piece with RDR2 characters development and in depth, and gave us the pleasure to play likely with the better character I've ever seen in a game. Great video, only saw it 3 years after being posted but it was really worth it and made want to play RDR2 again; I've been reading and watching some stuff that points to a RDR1 remake or remaster; it would be pretty great to play it also again but with improved features. Someone in the comments said this post, with all the story telling and top notch editing, that it really seemed a documentary. I totaly agree with that person. Cheers!

I'd be destroyed if he died in 2 I honestly hope he's the next main character of red dead redemption, if there's ever a third installment. @bastiat I never stated he was evil...I stated he was manipulative, which he was. Dutch is a very complex character, as they all are. You can see in RDR2 how he struggles within himself over what he once stood for and what he is becoming. That doesn't change that he was manipulative with his words and often utilized others to push his own self-interest. I'm sure he cared for many in the camp, but towards the end he began putting himself over everyone else and Micah was there to fan the flame after Hosea passed away.

This is a really good summation of the full story but I’m surprised in these kinds of videos, no one ever points out the moment after the trolley station heist, when Dutch receives a head injury when the trolley crashes. Until that point he would treat doubts with a level of hope and optimism, but after was much more irritable, and quick to anger. Immediately following it, during their escape I’m pretty sure it’s the first time Dutch reacts with anger and actively has a go at Arthur for having even the gall to criticise him. Supposedly something similar happened to Henry VIII after a jousting accident, and the head injury may have caused some brain damage which helped facilitate his descent into tyranny. The amount of focus given to it at the time in the game always led me to believe that this was major factor in Dutch’s descent too.

It took me a while to realize that by the time Arthur and John left, everyone that would’ve joined them was either dead or had left before them. Hosea, Sean, Lenny, and Keiran would have joined them if they hadn’t died, and Pearson, Trelawney, Reverend Swanson, and Karen would have joined them if they hadn’t left. One thing I must point out. Dutch wasn’t partnered with Micah in the epilogue and he wasn’t there for the money. I think this can be proven by one single line of dialogue. Its the line that Dutch says to John. “ Same as you….I suppose “. John, Sadie, and Charles went up that mountain to kill Micah, to put an end to all this, and most of all, to get revenge for their beloved friend and brother Arthur. In their minds, Micah prob killed Arthur because all they saw was Micah survive and Arthur didn’t. So they most definitely presumed that by killing Micah, it would serve some sense of revenge. They never went up there for the money, that was never the intent. By Dutch saying “ same as you….I suppose “. I think that at the moment of Arthur’s death, he didn’t just turn his back on his mistakes, or the gang, or Arthur. He also turned his back on Micah and all the money as well. At that point, he had a moment of clarity which can be seen when Arthur said “ I gave you all I had….i did “ and all he could mutter in response was “ I- “. In that moment, looking down at his protege, his son, dying by his feet, he realized. He realized he was wrong, Arthur never betrayed him and only cared about his best interest, and he realized that Micah was behind all of this. My guess is that some time after Arthur’s death, Dutch went on to live a life of solitude until hearing of Micah’s whereabouts just like Sadie. To which he ventured up the mountain to kill him. Maybe in his mind, killing Micah would give some type of penance or he would be forgiven, maybe it would give him peace. Of course, at the sight of Dutch, Micah is most pleased. I can assume so because he wanted him to join him so badly when they fled and was angry when he turned his back. This is what ultimately allowed Dutch to deceive Micah and in his words “ play him like a fiddle “, which can be seen after he shoots him and he responds with “ your shoot me- “. But at this moment in his life, seeing John and Sadie, and realizing he really did fail them, Dutch proceeds down the mountain without the money. He leaves, now realizing that the death of Micah served him nothing, and he will forever be tormented by the mistakes of his past. Which is what ultimately causes him to be so mentally unhinged in the first game. In the end, he kills himself, with John by his side once more. Any dream of living someplace else is now gone. The west might be forgotten, but Dutch never was, and neither was his demons. In the end, his only hope of getting away was to just give it all up, which is exactly what he did. Dutch is a special case in media because even though he messed up so many times, I can never see him as a run true villain. In my eyes, he will always be just a broken man, a man running from his pain. A man who couldn’t deal with the deaths of his closest comrades, the people he considered family. And a man who became a slave to the very thing he was trying to run from all those years before.

Not crying out of sadness, but because I know that in a few short moments, the man I got to learn, discover, and connected to, would be gone! I thought about all the decisions I made, I thought of the life that He had, everything would be gone. I thought about how Arthur leaving the only family he had ever known. In the end of it all, Jack is the man Arthur truly saved. Of course that is only because he saved John and Abigail who had at least a few good years together before RDR1. Jack is the one who escaped this life. Sure, he killed John's killer, but, from what we've seen in Easter eggs and such, Jack moves on and becomes a writer. He finally leaves the west and escaped the life that his father was doomed to.

At the end of John Marston in RDR1, I was absolutely floored that they killed the best character in all of video games. Fortunately, Jack's ending was so satisfying that it felt like there was no other way it should have happened. I thought for sure that no other character could ever make me feel like I did at the end of that game. I was super hyped for RDR2; I bought a PS4 Pro and a new 65" TV just so I could experience it in the best way I could. But who was this Arthur guy? I'd much rather be playing as John... Needless to say, I cried when Arthur died. Kudos to Rockstar for doing the impossible and make me love another character more than John Marston. If they release another RDR, and they do it again, I swear its going to be like an actual family member dying. Of course, if they don't right their ship, that isn't going to happen.

Yeah, I probably think Red Dead 2 is my favourite game of all time at this point. I finished the Story yesterday and the epilogue in the morning and good grief the way they made you care for Arthur and the way he tries to change for the better before he passes, I just felt it 😪 his relationships with the characters and how he tried to help Dutch see what was right and knowing no matter what honor you had, you couldn't keep him alive just broke me. Even Charlotte, I felt so bad for her til i found out she was aware he didnt have long 😕 and Riding that horse back to the sound of 'Unshaken' was just the epitome of self reflection. The game's Immaculate and I will probably play it again very soon without a doubt

Amazing breakdown and analysis of this breathtaking franchise. For me when I played the game I always had a lot of compassion for Dutch since, I always loved his speeches and charisma ,the timing for his lines and his way of knowing how to get the best out of his gang really made have an interest in the character. In my opinion if you really look in depth at the trolley crash in Saint Denis, Dutch suffers severe brain damage, in the sense that he starts getting really agitated , and verbally attacking Arthur on several occasions. Which is a big sign of brain damage as I know from personal experience. Dutch completely loses the plot and does whatever it takes to get to Bronte. (Regardless of nearly having his Enforcer devoured by an alligator) Once he gets to Bronte and he’s on that boat it’s just him and Bronte, in his mind and he knows he’s going to come out the victor, showing a complete reversal of the whole concept and idea of his character. Once Bronte is finished off, he gets bloodthirsty , feeling like he’s on top of the world. Knowing that he’s taken down the king of a major city, which only fuels his ego even further. Once he knows that the Lemoyne National Bank robbery is his last big job before paradise. He rests on his laurels knowing that this is it and that his dream will finally become a reality. But once Hosea is killed and all the money goes down with the ship he loses it. Knowing that his best friend and most trusted advisor is dead and gone the realisation sets in. Allowing Micah to take a hold of him and feed him nonsensical ideas and visions. Leading Dutch’s descent into madness even more intriguing from my perspective.

it's really a shame how john said "I turned my back on them after they turned their back on me" when there is no mention of Arthur, who, as his last chance at happiness, saved john and his family from those who were after them.
@GlennDavey
@GlennDavey 3 жыл бұрын
In general though, it was true. You really wouldn't mention that little bit of help from Arthur at the end every time you tell people the basic story. He's dead now. And really the story is true, he felt like he didn't have a home there anymore, Dutch went crazy, so he turned his back on it all. It's excusable. But I always had resistance to Arthur from having played John first.
@bakeyboi3958
@bakeyboi3958 3 жыл бұрын
@@GlennDavey it sucks that dutch's mental decline was caused, in theory, by the trolley accident with lenny and Arthur. Also Hosea was holding Dutch together, he made him see what he was doing wrong. After he died, it just got worse and worse. He leaned more towards Micah because he was submissive to everything Dutch thought. Dutch just through those 20 years of loyalty away because of the ignorance of one six-month-long gang member
@egg-cf8bt
@egg-cf8bt 2 жыл бұрын
Well the actual reason is because he didn't exist yet the canonical reason is most likely because he went for the money instead of helping John because why else would no one even utter a word about Arthur if he hadn't has betrayed everyone I mean there's probably a reason high honor isn't the only ending
@deathbyslipknot
@deathbyslipknot 2 жыл бұрын
@@egg-cf8bt No, the canonical reason is that there's no reason to mention Arthur in RDR1. In the Epilogue of RDR2 John tells Mary Beth that he thinks about Arthur often, but he doesn't like to speak about him because it's painful. 12 years have passed since Arthur's death, John is more focused on the basics of the situation which is: The gang did leave him. They did leave him to die on the train heist and he has to hunt them down.
@deathbyslipknot
@deathbyslipknot 2 жыл бұрын
@@bakeyboi3958 The trolley accident theory holds no weight. Dutch was always a bad person, as made evident by him ruthlessly killing Heidi McCourt in the Blackwater heist long before the trolley crash, and his insanity was worsened by the strenuous situation of the gang falling apart, people around him dying, and the law constantly closing in on him. He got desperate and greedy and Micah was one of the only ones that stayed with him. That's why he favored Micah in the end, because Arthur was questioning his authority and Micah wasn't.
