Thanks for the well done video! I’m the dealer who sold that boat ( and several sisterships) new, and I’ve done a lot of miles sailing on Moody 54s. It is a wonderful boat to sail, surprisingly quick in all conditions, and very easy to handle. I have a comment about your reservations about the big glass “patio” doors, as many people have similar sentiments. It is widely believed that if you get rolled in a monohull, it will right itself, and by inference - you can sort yourself out and carry on. The reality is that in all likelihood you will lose the rig, the inside of the boat will be untold carnage with loose stuff flying around, water ingress, and injuries to the crew. The vast majority of rolled boats are then unable to carry on, and are abandoned. As an example, look at the fate of the rolled boats in last years golden globe race. All bar one were abandoned. The one that made it back to cape town was structurally damaged. Those boats were prepped to sail southern ocean conditions. Your average production cruiser isn’t, of course. As for catamarans not sinking when they invert, that observation is true - but what good is sitting on an upturned hull in a gale going to be ? As with a monohull in similar distress - in both cases you are going to end up in a life raft in all likelihood, with the boat at that stage, done for. The point being - patio doors are the least of your problems!

You guys missed what looked like something very important at the helm that helped your visibility forward in tight spaces. It has a camera looking down at the boat from the mast so you can see fore, port, and starboard on the screen. With all the backup cameras on cars and such, that is very cool on a boat.

I think that your concerns about the glass doors are amusing. In Europe, boats have to meet minimum safety requirements. The cockpit drains will quickly drain any water. The doors should be closed in bad weather, just like boards should be in place. The doors have been engineered (in Germany where they understand engineering) to withstand forces that are outrageously unlikely to be generated. There is less probability of these doors being breached by heavy seas than of a catamaran being flipped by lesser seas.

I saw this boat' or at least the same model at the Southampton boat show. I was really impressed with all the features you guys were also impressed with, excellent build quality and an unusual concept but nice layout and style. I do tend to agree about the sliding doors. It is a big boat for 54’ but as you know when you are out in open ocean it is small and a big wave over the stern could result in a lot of water below very quickly. Interesting to hear the builders take on it. As an aside, I rebuilt a boat at Moody’s boat yard which was in a Mecca of sailing which is the Hamble River in the Solent, UK. A H Moody & Son had built boats for many years from their yard on the Hamble but sadly the yard has gone, now a large marina and storage ashore, and the name sold to another builder in Germany I believe who also build Hanse yachts. I am a monohull guy but I would probably pick another yacht for the money if I had the money... Andy 🇬🇧

To shine a bit light on this rather amateurish talk about the "Glass Doors", this Moody is made in Germany, and it is CE-certificated Class A. Class A means the boat is certified for waves more then 4 meters (bluewater) and wind above beaufort 8, but not hurrycan strength. So an insurance has to cover that, and the builder had it certified, the doors will stand the water. Its a less then 1 minute look into the homepage, I´d rather do that, then guess about all that kind of uuhhh things - thing... Not to mention, this model is very popular in NZ, and I think there they have real weather, and real waves, and they know what is good.

Myths about solar panels: never walk on any solar panels, they will get damaged. PV cells in rigid panels will break instantly when you walk on them, flexible panels will break after repeated point loaded stress. Flexible panels will fail within a few years due to UV damage and may cause fire when they do. Only very rich people can afford flexible panels, as you will have to replace them often. Even the tiniest amount of shade will stop most panels from yielding ANY energy. Only Sunpower seems to have a technology where some shade does not affect the entire panel. Bottom line: install new rigid panels, preferably Sunpower. Avoid shade at all cost.

Interesting boat, but if I were to go for a 50-footer, it would be a Discovery, the older Discovery 55 being my favorite, maybe y'all can find one someday. That being said, I had trouble getting the layout in my head, but from what I can tell, there were two staterooms aft and one big V-berth forward with some additions berths. The Gallay was up in the main cabin; I'm to assume? She a Slutter rigged sloop, liked how you showed the full mast and boom this time, but a mast fuller on a $750k boat? I'd have a Schaefer boom furler/reefing system on that lady. I don't understand the thinking behind the Solent rigged foresails, with this rig, you can deploy one foresail or the other; the only advantage of the Solent rig being you can have two different sails ready for two types of wind or reach. However, your still not going to get enough square-footage of sail up to get that heavy gal up to hull speed in anything under 25 knots on a broad reach. She's a marina queen, pretty but heavy. I go with a cutter rig, the inner stay from about 8-foot aft of the forestay and attached to the mast just above the spreaders, in true cutter style. This way, you can run a big foresail with an inner staysail together, and dang, that's a pretty sight.
@paulfata75815 жыл бұрын
Cajun Wolf you did a better job describing the yacht than they did! Nice to hear someone with knowledge describe and give an opinion. Minimal experience at sailing and describing a boat they never sailed on as good/bad on a passage.
@CajunWolffe5 жыл бұрын
@@paulfata7581 They know their stuff but hurried at a boat show, and it wasn't the best choice to review, but one takes what one can get. I'm an old sea salt, learned to sail from my paternal grandfather on an old wooden ketch rigged cutter back in the late 50s. We're talking wooden spars, canvas and hemp lines, tared, real sailing.
@CajunWolffe5 жыл бұрын
@@paulfata7581 Actually, I made a typo in calling it a slutter rigged sloop when it's a Solent rigged sloop. A Slutter rig is like a Cutter. However, the inner and outer forestays are masthead rigged and still not quite enough room to run two foresails, actually not advised without extra rigging because the mast can only handle so much load form the sail square footage. With a fractional rigged inner stay on the cutter, you can't run that big of sail and makes it easier tacking with two foresails. The inner staysail can auto-tack.
@paulfata75815 жыл бұрын

WoW Beautiful Boat! But...... The big windows are a nice touch however a good size wave could knock them out.... And the freeboard is just to high! The mast is it bolted to the deck or on the keel this causes the mast to become weak... A couple of ares to look at when buying a Sailboat.. How the deck was bolted to the boat How the Keel is installed on the boat is it bolted to the keel (stronger) or enveloped in fiberglass (very cheaper installation) The Hall is it hand laid fiberglass (stronger) or done by a fiberglass Chopper Gun (faster and cheaper).. I'm not a fan of the double helm.. It takes up a lot of room.. So one more thing about the mast being bolted to the deck, it gives more room inside the boat, because who wants to walk around the mast when it's bolted to the feel all day.. The Mainsail how is the mainsail attached to the mast is it in a grove or by a track... The cabin is laid out very nicely lots of room.. The wood is nicely finished.. The electronics are the very best on the market..

I disagree wirh the assessment it’s trying to be a catamaran or that someone should just buy a cat if they want sliding doors or other features like that. Not everyone wants a cat or all the characteristics that go along with it but they may like the design features. I think people say similar things about trucks, they see someone buy one loaded with features and say “if you want leather seats and a fancy interior just buy a luxury car” Well that’s not a valid statement really, a Cadillac can’t tow their camper or boat across the country and they don’t want to deal with a base work truck or deal with multiple vehicles and multiple vehicle expenses and insurances.

They (Moody) should know what the self righting moment is. They should even be able to tell you that and how long it should take before it self rights. But I suspect this was not really designed for blue water boat ... sure it can, just not its intended design purpose. Likely for the carribean or med cruising market. So sliding doors should not be an issue for the most part. BUT I agree, it just looked like it was trying to be a cat. And for that price why try to look and be a cat when you can just get one. Shame because I liked the moody boats of old, but meh guess they have to do what they need to do to stay in the market and still going.

(*) ( I felt the swamping being of concern with the high bulwarks but High bulwarks along with the windows you were talking about need of concern when life depends on it why wait till life depends on it . ) ( I know it must have been hard but what we wanted to see most with your mentioned in the beginning of this video was the salon and I know it was crowded and hard to get video but we didn't get to see not even half of it . ) ( Not long ago I heard the opinion of a few boat engineers that explain how high bulwarks can actually rip a boat in half if the boat is swamped . ) ( It would have to come with at least two 4 to 6 inch high-volume trash pumps as bilge pumps then I might consider buying one . ) ( with the way things are built just to fall apart on us today would be nice to find a Builder for all the vessels we purchase in life that will guarantee the upkeep and maintenance for the life of that vessel a minimum of 25 years and I would make that type of purchase . ) ( I truly see a beautifully built death trap at the price of a quarter million dollars not for me but thanks for the tour and the lesson !!! ) ( and it would truly have to come with a few extra life rafts . ) ( is anybody ever going to put together airbags for ships and boats that would keep that ship or boat afloat if it ever got swapped no matter how bad the seas are I know the possibility and every vessel should have them . ) ( I think this is a wonderful idea free to anybody who wants to pick it up and run with it . I choose not to hold it to my thoughts I'd rather give it to all freely . ) :peace. :light. :loving-gratitude. :ph-balanced :equalizing-freedom. I'd consider it a pretty safe boat as long as you are not on board and I would be subjected to your jibberish.
