We were really excited to take a look at this catamaran. At an estimated new MSRP of between $300,000 - $350,000, the Seawind 1160 Lite is one of the most affordable new catamarans out there. We wish that more catamaran companies would make smaller and more affordable ocean-going catamarans. The general theme of the Annapolis boat show was the "bigger is better" mentality which we certainly don't agree with, naturally so seeing a catamaran of this size was a nice breath of fresh air.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

Seawinds are known for being some of the best ocean going catamarans around. The curves are to add strength and save weight. As is the Spartan interior on this particular model. They are renowned for being fast, reliable, well made and safe. While also doing a good job of utilising space fairly well in a cat this length with narrow hills.The hull drag on this boat is far less than the Lagoon equivalent and it's ability in open water is far superior.

Also it has cable steering and not hydraulic steering, so you actually have a feedback when you sail it, and a spartan light construction does not mean only a faster boat, but more possible payload without having the boat overloaded and needing to use the engines in every not ideal wind condition. Consider also the foam core, much better and more durable then the balsa core of many competitors. It is indeed the best boat for a couple or a little family that wants to do ocean cruising, long passages included, having a low budget (spending twice or 3 times more you have obviously better alternatives) and that seeks more real quality then some more space and less spartan, but not more functional, interior. This not for racing, exasperate performance, just for real ocean cruising.

Don’t judge a book by the cover guys. These boats have proven sea keeping abilities over the years both in Bluewater cruising and charter here in Oz. They represent great value compared to the many overpriced cats out there.

Appreciate your thoughts guys! Seawind/Corsair have been around for a long time and build serious sailing boats for serious sailors. Everything on the boat is form-follows-function which is different than many 10 ton roomarans currently built in Fr. and SA. Curved topsides? Yes adds strength and sheds water easily in heavy seas. Down galley? Reduces windage of the saloon and separates food preparation from the guests on a crewed boat. It is a personal choice and not for everyone. All of the design choices make for a very light, strong, liveable boat that may have a 10% speed advantage over a long passage. This allows cruisers to cover more ground, outrun storms, and arrive refreshed instead of wild-eyed after a long passage due to the sea-keeping qualities. Call me a fan. I have no financial interest in Seawind but did own one of their early boats for 10 years. I also sailed extensively on Corsair F-boats and found them to be fast, comfortable, and sea-worthy.

Curves add to the strength without increasing the weight so that would probably be the major factor in design of the smaller cat.

I have never been to the Annapolis boat show - but I absolutely AGREE with your sentiment here - "The general theme of the Annapolis boat show was the "bigger is better" mentality which we certainly don't agree with, naturally so seeing a catamaran of this size was a nice breath of fresh air." For me, the key features of any catamaran has to be ease of handling short-handed (mooring and sailing) and effective use of available space. We would never need multiple berths and would prefer a workshop and laundry/utility rooms and just two berths rather than four or five berths.

It is better to tell the truth rather than just tell someone what they want to hear. I appreciate it because that is how I am. I can be hard to take sometimes, but it is not because I don't care and just want to fight with someone. Say no to Yes men or Yes women, instead invite constructive conversations.

New viewer. I’ve watched a number of your tours and really love your perspective. Hope you’re battened down and secure while weathering this plague we’re experiencing. The one thing I wish you would add to your reviews is the crew requirement of various boats. Seems like some of the bigger (50+) boats would be hard to crew by yourself and some have powered line systems that would help out. Mentioning these features as part of your checklist would be very helpful. Stay safe!

Your opinion on this cat is completely legittimate, as every opinion is personal, every one seeks different things in a boat. Still I would have liked if you would had considered in the review some features of this catamaran that not all the possible competitors at its price range or even at a higher price often lack. Things like the bridge clearance over the water level, so less slamming on the bridge by waves, or the foam core instead of a balsa one that can rotten in few years as the water finds a way in, so potentially much more durability, it is a cat designed to be able to do long ocean passages, not to be parked in some tropical beach and spend 95% of his life at anchor, not to be a floating apartment that can also sometimes sail and sometimes motor from island to island. Then a person can not need that type of catamaran and prefer other types with different capability, and it is perfectly fine, but a review should at least mention those things.
@peterfrebold
@peterfrebold 4 жыл бұрын
..... Hey Guys .... not for certain, but the curved decks could be structural for strength, with the price being as low as it is it could be a more economical way to get the structural strength .... sure it was a shorter boat, but the cabin still seamed to be of a good size even though the pontoons were shorter and tramps smaller ..... not sure about the engine access being from inside, but sure like the room around the engine for easy access ..... those sure were some big portals in the office area on the owners side, lots on natural light ..... Like you mentioned Randi, the obstacle course on the side decks was quite the turn-off ..... my preference would be a mono-hull and how cluttered the side decks are is something always take note of .... I am gathering you didn't put in your order on this one ....... great little video .... have fun be safe, save our oceans ......

Previous 1160 lite models had two 20hp 4 stroke outboards, one fitted into a well on each sponson that could be tilted up to clear the water; Now I see they are putting the Yanmar saildrives in instead of the outboards. I don't like saildrives because they add a bunch of maintenance despite the potential fuel savings over the 20HP 4 stroke outboards. If I had the coin to get a 1160 Lite I'd mount a Yanmar D Torque 50HP diesel outboard in a well as an auxillary motor.

I have a 2019 1160 Lite. The standard is two 20 hp Honda outboards. We opted for the optional 25 hp Yamaha high thrust outboards. The last Seawind we owned - a model 1000 - had dual 9.9 hp Yamaha high thrust. I prefer outboards. SOME Lite's have been fitted with the two diesel engines, but not typical.

The advantage of the galley down is that if you live aboard and have people over, you don't have to worry so much about a couple of pots in the sink you haven't cleaned yet. The long + narrow design forced by the hull shape also makes for good bracing in a seaway.

It's interesting that you don't see the hull length to beam ratio advertised on these boats, it's an important criterial for ruffly figuring the performance characteristics of a boat. The thing that really jumps out at me, though, is how far forward the bridgedeck extends. Going to weather, it's very likely that you'll have waves slamming into the underside of the bridgedeck. It is a smaller catamaran, so they going to have a harder time fitting the accommodations in a shorter length boat, but I'd be afraid to cross the Atlantic in that boat.

@rabukan5842
@rabukan5842 4 жыл бұрын
@@kevinjohnson3521 The 1160 Lite has 20-25 hp outboards which provides more storage space, and can be easily removed for repair, etc. And if one totally dies, they are much cheaper to replace. However, I am partial to diesels for torque and longevity - although my Yamaha 20hp dinghy engine is pretty easy to maintain, etc. In truth, if I were to buy one of these, I would look into eventually removing any gas engine and going solar/electric with a DC generator to power the engines. In that case, I would imagine having 2 outboards would make a conversion effortless compared to having to remove the diesels, lines, etc.

@@kevinjohnson3521 Spoke with Shane at Seawind - electric engine sail drive conversions are easiest with the diesels because of the way they had to design the 1160 lites for the outboards. Right now, electric is still iffy as far as range and storage, so for bluewater, probably at this stage, diesels are best, but for coastal cruising, these outboards are probably the way to go.
@heikorommele8668

@@rabukan5842 I'm also interested in going fully electric on a sailboat. I think if you replace the petrol outboards with electric outboards, like two epropulsion 6kw, it might work. During passages the outboards can recuperate up to 1000 watt each at 10 knts. of speed and 270 watts at 7 knts. I guess the 1160 is easily capable of reaching this speed. Add a couple more solar panels and you should be fine even if at mooring. Any thoughts?

i don't know if you guys read comments on old videos, but i'm curious to hear your opinion. i'm just wondering if those trampolines on cats are even necessary anymore. maybe 20 years ago when materials were heavier, and the need to cut weight up front was a greater issue. but now, with the improvements in design, construction materials, and a better understanding of weight distribution, , i'm thinking the trampoline is on the way out. i've noticed on several newer models, the trampolines are getting smaller and smaller. in some cases they almost seem like they are more an homage to the past rather than a necessary feature. even a little trampoline is going to introduce a lot of spray onto the foredeck. why not just axe them and add to the living space.

When you sail a Seawind and experience the duel helms you can't go back. You can sit on the hull and sail them like a dingy which is amazing. When I get on other cats a go into a tack I feel myself wanting to walk to the other side. You can't judge them on the dock you have to sail them. Also the low free board gives you a much greater feeling of speed. In my humble and very subjective opinion for the money I think the larger 1260 is the best yacht ever made. And they did not show him actually walking awkardly forward on deck or going back awkardly to the cockpit. Just standing still.

1160 , 1160 lite and 1190 all use the same basic hull . For the price I find them difficult to not like . Randi 's "meh" well , she wins as the boat doesn't talk to her "soul" so not a boat for her . The 1160 lite and 1190 still use the outboard motors , which I like as easy repair and no sail drive "issues"

I didnt find any videos where you looked at a wharram catamaran. Any plans to look into one of those?

I'd actually really love to get aboard a wharram. They're kind of hard to find in FL though.

word of the day today appears to be "interesting". Your boat tours are nice, but I find that I enjoy the tours that you have the boat to yourself and are able to take your time. These Annapolis tours are great for the variety of boats you're getting but the quality seems to be quite different.

I wonder how the visibility would be in a busy area looking forward through the windshield from so far aft?

Uh. Horrible. As we’ve searched, toured and sailed a few different cats, we pretty much find these low mounted helms unworkable. Anybody that thinks it’s ok to force the helmsman to look THROUGH the cabin have never sailed busy harbors or at night in the rain.

@@joesmythe8232 I agree. Night, busy area, rain, glare and reflection on the glass from everything. I always thought it would be cool to put the helm inside, up front to the windshield so you can see where you are going.

I saw this boat at the Annapolis show, and was amazed at how many trip and fall hazards there were on deck. All those curves does not add confidence. Plus that master bed was way too high off the ground, climbing in and out of it will get old fast.

I didn't like it was all clear glass windows.Seams like it would get really hot in full sun.I have not seen any yet.But on someone else's vlog of his cat he built a full bath off the salon which I like allot.I would like to see a factory full bath like he's got.

I want lounging areas in a cockpit.. So that both people can lie down while undereay/ and lie down on a nightwatch(lazy nightwatch). Did the lounge in the saloon convert easily to beds? Do these designers just assume people on these cats are always sitting and sipping cocktails. What about the couple on long passages? Horizontal spaces required haha.

Gotta niggle on the term cheap, that word indicates a lack of fit, finish or guality of materials. None of those guality s were indicated in yer vid Thanks for the tour.
