In this video I am touring a Moxie 37 Island Hopper and it's an astoundingly unique catamaran. From the forward cockpit to the light displacement and galley-down design, this boat puts sailing performance first, and interior volume second. It's a breath of fresh air amongst all of the condo catamarans on the market. This is a boat that is designed for people that truly love sailing.
Designed and built by Uwe Jaspersen, you can tell that she resembles a smaller gunboat with the forward cockpit which is no surprise since Uwe worked on gunboats as well during his career.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

Looks like she would be a blast to daysail, or even week long trips, but not what I would want to cruse long term with that layout. No protected salon would get old quick. Being in an isinglass tent would be no fun outside the tropics, and it looks like very little ventilation below. But it does look like a lot of fun to blast around the bay!

Builders name is pronounced Uvee’ and I believe only one or two were ever made. I sailed the boat quit a bit and really enjoyed it. Boat is great for performance day sailing and short term cruising in tropical waters. Settees both fold flat to create two day beds which are great for sleeping at night as well. As I recall there is no connecting bar between the rudders. As a result a traditional autopilot will not work. I think you would have to use the helm mount auto pilot which is less than ideal. Boat is not a live aboard cruiser.

I share your appreciation of this design. I tried to find more about it and it looks like there may only be THAT one in the US. But there was another one listed elswhere and it had clear plastic folding doors on the cockpit access circle. I think I would plan a way to drop that anchor from the cockpit also. It is so close to the helm. You can do everything else from there! It is nice but I would call it spartan. I'm unsure how they could value it at a quarter of a million dollars! I guess it must be in the carbon fiber spars and deck. I'm not sure I could justify even $150K for one that small, but I do like the smaller size. All the write-ups talked about its great speed but I couldn't find anyone that would say what that was. Finally a magazine review quoted the builder with a top speed in the high teens! So THAT could cut down your travel times considerably! I wonder what they cost in South Africa?

I had the chance to sail in one of these a few years back. They're really fun but SPARTAN. I would compare the living area with a 30' monohull. I was assuming a Catalina 27 at the time and this felt about the same size below decks. They come with Lombardi 20ho diesels, which are a nightmare to source parts for so many have been swapped out for heavier more conventional diesels. I know Randy loved the forward cockpit and you can single hand from there, controlling all sails and the dagger boards BUT, and it's a huge drawback (and probably why forward helms didn't catch on) with the headsail up, you're totally blind. You cannot see ahead.

You probably either love this boat or not so much. You give up the salon for the forward helm and rely on the cockpit for your living space. Works fine for daysailing and perhaps overnights, but longer cruises would find it lacking I think. If you have young kids with you, it may present some challenges. But, for the right person, kind of a cool boat.

This looks like a hell of a lot of fun for day sailing and short Bahamas island hopping! Man, to be under 30 again. Not a good choice for long term cruising - especially not if you’re older with a family to accommodate aboard. Let’s call this the “teardrop trailer of sub-40-ft cruising catamarans.”

Nice job Jordan. I agree the forward helm is unique and would be fun for a day sail. Looks a bit damp for long hauls or heavy weather. If you want fast, you can expect to get wet, so it's a compromise in comfort to get the speed. I didn't see the year built, but it looks like almost new condition.

I would disagree that the price is right. I have looked at hundreds if not 000s of catamarans and you can definitely find "condo cats" that would perform just as well or better in the 250k price range. That said this is the most unique cockpit and helmstation layout I have seen and I personally love the forward view it provides as well as the ability while at the helm to easily see and communicate with guest. I would definitely consider this layout with a bit more length because it appears it is definitely lacking built in storage spaces. Thanks fpr the vid! I'm always excited to learn about the lesser known vessels out there!

This boat is incredible. Too bad is this isn't your 'cup of tea' the design and performance plus lower maintenance is exactly what I'm looking for. Yes the 249K isn't easy to swallow but for a turn key machine? It seems right. What I see for less are OLD slow dogs that needs major maintenance from day one. So far this is my favorite boat I have seen on this channel. Would love to see it sailing

The lack on the ability to make forward area weather tight from oncoming s4as would be of deep concern to me in a severe weather condition on the open ocean. Isingglass will not hold up to a few tons of water over the bow. It appears that the two places that would be water tight are the two hulls. Otherwise, anything in the cockpit/salon and helm would be right over the stern.

I look forward to you touring a Gemini 105M or 105MC as a comparison. While not as performance oriented, the Geminis make efficient use of a smaller boat. I hope you don't stumble on a Gemini Legacy as they made some design changes like fixed keels and hull mounted engines that lost some of the benefits of the 105M and 105MC, particularly low draft capability.

I really like the layout also. However, that forward helm station did not seem to have any protection from the weather. I saw something (clear plastic sheeting?) rolled at the front edge of the "roof" but didn't see where it could attach. ( just re-watched and now see how it works, I think lol ) The galley also seemed a little cramped, but may not be that bad in person. Overall I still like monohulls better.

I'm sure that thing is a rocket and a total blast to sail, but that is not a cruising boat. You could maybe get away with light coastal cruising where you only sail for a day or two at a time, but this is the kind of boat where the provisioning alone for a major crossing is going to wreck its performance, ignoring the fact that there is nowhere to store said provisioning. And for long term cruising that is going to include unavoidable foul weather sailing, that forward helm would be a nightmare. Having that forward helm open to the cockpit would likewise make the cockpit less appealing in foul weather. So, a great daysailer/occasional weekender/potentially a rare week long trip boat, but a cruiser it is not.

Minimalist Catamaran, would be easy to maintain and clean, lack of windows is a good thing in my opinion (as long as their are no bugs), lack of wood is welcome (less maintenance down the road). Price seems pretty expensive for what you get, but, we did not get to see what kind of batteries and how many. Did it have air conditioning ?

@FlesHBoX
@FlesHBoX 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, for what they are asking for this, you could probably find an 1190 on the used market for not much more, and the 1190 is going to offer so much more versatility for actual cruising. You would be sacrificing some performance since this boat is undoubtedly lighter than the 1190. But if you only planned to daysail or weekend warrior your boat, this would be an amazing option.

LOL Catamarans I love the style and benefits of a cat however two small hulls instead of one big one doesn't really reconcile the quadruple average price. And make no mistake they are all junk the structures are absolutely lucky they float. I have seen some really scary construction leave it there. Then there is the rig with a wide stance making it quick and easy to fold the boat in two getting it through some inland waterways or canals. The relative torque needed to tweek the hull structure in 90% of production Cats? is south of what it takes to open some pickle jars.. Wheres my checkbook ! Dont get me wrong I love those boats but with very very few notable exceptions they have construction quality similar to that of an RV rather than an ocean going yacht .
