A very thought provoking analysis as always. My family moved from Multan to India after the partition. Even though I haven't been to Multan, I still feel a connection to the land. The hardships that the common man had to face just for the elite to get an ideological win is atrocious to say the least. Coexistence had been a staple in the Indian subcontinent till the British gave us a parting gift in the form of intolerance and hatred. I might be considered naive to think that there is still hope for peace and collaboration between the two nations, but these are my two cents. Happy republic day, Pakistan!

Nations do not fall from heaven they are created by human craftsmanship and ownership. However, the major constituent of nationhood is the regionalism itself, no force on earth can bend a Balochi to proclaim himself a Pakistani, unless he himself considers the same. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a conducive environment, in general, to acculturate the people of different regions into a single entity. Unfortunately, this has been a distant dream in Pakistan and it seems nothing would change. Diverse cultures in a country may provide an attractive portrait to the international audience, however, the diversity of cultures has in-built fault lines which require a regular repair of autonomy, without which, the state may wither away.

As far as the two nation theory is concerned, i support two nation theory and i have experienced it myself. I am doing phd from Norway and in my university most of my Indian colleagues are hindus. They also agree that minority specially muslims suffer alot in India. I am thankful to Sir Syed ahmed khan and quaid e azam for giving us a country where atleast we can breathe and pray without any fear. I also think that more rights should be given to minorities so that they don’t feel like unwelcome guests in Pakistan. Thank you

The basis of nationhood can't be only language, only religion or only ethnicity. Its a perfect blend of such factors such that it is exclusive to the people of that nation. That blend which makes them feel special/unique when they compare themselves to the people of other countries.

I think nationhood is a sense of homogeneity can be based on anything from culture, language, race, religion, geography, values. and within one nation still can be sub-groups which still feel connected through a sentiment.

On basis of two nation theory we got our country and then to defend it we maintained a strong military which took over country several times, Kashmir remained bt wars as well as a Bangladesh took place. Had we not opted for two nation theory the defence of minorities would still be on the shoulders of lawyers, politicians and intellextuals. Maybe we would have created more Iqbals and Jinnahs bt we created Sikander mirza, Ayub, ZiaulHaq, Yahya, Musharaf. One can point to conditon of minorities in India but wht have we done in our country to remove the injustices occuring to the poor. Only difference is that in a combined India we would be having a different reason for the oppression and injustice. This question of whether we took the right decision or not would be irrelevant if we had improved upon it further and Created a country worthy of the dream sawn by our forefathers. The fact that it is still being asked tells us something else.

I like to point out that One Unit principle was the basis of the Constitution of 1956. West Pakistan and East Pakistan just the two provinces were formed and recognized by the political parties. At the time of martial law of October 7th Pakistan was consists of two units. One another point is that Mr Jawahar Lal Nehroo at the beginning of his career in politics as a young politician was the personal secretary of Mr A K Fazal ul Haq.

To achieve Pakistan, concept of Two Nation theory was vital. Because, we can clearly see now, what would have happened to all the muslims in a BJP Hindutva led and RSS inspired India. But at the time conception of Pakistan, the two nation theory concept fulfilled its purpose i.e. of acheiving Pakistan, therefore, at the very moment, the forefathers should have taken a clear policy of an inclusive progressive but islamic state, that protects the fundamental rights of all its citizens regardless of class, creed, color and religion that Quaid e Azam did. But, unfortunately, majority of the leaders of newly acquired Pakistan could not agree on this important concept. The friction between the provinces started to increase while at the same time tolerance, inclusiveness, power sharing, decentralization and cohesiveness was on decline that cost us Bangla Desh.

Salam Sir! In my opinion, democracy is a system in which majority rules the minority. If a majority's way of life, that is religion, is dictated by their completely polar different religious beliefs such as Hindus who believe in almost 72 millions gods compared to Muslims with 1 God, the result would be the situation that is currently prevailing in India where harrassment of Muslims is commonplace without any punishment. Pakistan is fraught with with many serious problems but they all are more or less solvable whereas if Muslims were ruled by a majority of Hindus it would have been a horrible spectre and would have resulted in endless cycle of slavery most certainly

Ashir sb ! One nation theory is only applicable to those countries where different segments of society are treated equally, where no sense of superiority is in the brains of most of majority. Where law is equal for everyone not written but in application. Otherwise your women ,your property, your daily activities are under the control of majority. Only if you are being realised of this fact is enough for raising sense of insecurity and considering yourself a separate nation.

Although I strongly believe in inclusivity, i still think that having a separate country was the sane option. In the same breath, i also support the creation of Bangladesh. It was a relation which was bound to fail. On the other hand i am a strong proponent of diversity and support inclusivity in all parts of our lives. For me nationhood is taking care of each other, a secular govt who acts as service provider to ALL its country men. A society which celebrates each other, cherishes each other and stands with each other at the time of need.

For me, nationhood (Qaomiyat) means the association with the people of a country and belongingness to that land. I also believe that I would be a national of a country if and only if I own its people and its every single bit. for me, religion, color, language, etc. are wrong parameters to justify the definition of nation. according to my concept of nationalism, if a person doesn't own his people and country, he can be a resident of that country but he can never be a national of that country

In my opinion, the basis of Nationhood varies with time, place and other circumstances. However, for me in present world the most powerful binding force for people is similar culture and ideology not really religion. In contrast to it, history has proven religion too as a binding force for masses like at the time of Beloved Holy Prophet (PBUH).

It was so explosive that fire is still on today with no end expected. It proves one thing beyond any doubts that it was wrong. It should not have been done. Two nation theory is base of Pakistan structure but after it when legislators are dominant on Pakistan by Punjabi ethnicity all other provinces suffering badly.

Nation is a bunch of people who think themselves as same people, their sense of oneness draws from many factors that are common in them such as language, religion, geography, race, colour etc. Bangalis considered themselves more distance from Hindus and cosied up with Western provinces to form pakistan. But after independence they felt their own nationalism separate from Pakistan due to "Language, Geography, race and even colour" differences. The common-religion-bond was not able to hold together two parts. Another thing is that Two Nation Theory was primarily based on religion but other factor bore on too, such as geography, language race and colour. Pakistan movement was a movement for safeguarding interests of a large minority in general and Muslims in particular. As Ashir said, we Pakistanis have swerved from the very principled stance, on which Pakistan owed its birth. Minorities in Pak should be safest in South Asia so we can truly achieve the principle of Pakistan. Principled stance also would never allow for Pakistan to dither or slack on Kashmir issue.
