The violence in Dorchester and Roxbury has been tough for many years, streets beefing with other streets in close proximity. Crazy how many people lost to the violence. Just a 15 mins car ride away from the historical sites, and Newbury st and all that there is another world people outside of MA often don’t know it exist, some of the most diverse zip codes in the entire USA. Good food, good people, but unfortunately plagued by violence in some spots. Crazy though that Gentrification is taking hold now in a lot of those spots.

I grew up in a tiny town with under 1000 population, but shit was like a gang war every night. Gun shots, murders, deaths. I saw my first body at 7 years old, dude was propped against a street sign with a cig in his lips trying to make him look alive but he had a bullet hole in his neck and a jacket thrown over him to hide the blood. I saw three homeless men arguing and two proceeded to stab to death the other whom they claimed stole from them. A kid I went to school with thought he was a jackboy until he tried a robbery where he blew his own foot off with a sawed off 12 gauge trying to pull it out his waistband. I saw and heard so much shit living there and none of it ever made the papers or news channels. Ever.

The brain damage that comes from structural poverty and the systemic violence that comes with it, especially the gun violence unique to the US. University Psychiatric Scientist Joan Luby and others in her field have repeatedly found that structural poverty and traumatic violence cause accelerated aging, brain damage, and other profound physiological changes on the cellular level as early as in the womb (in cases where the mother is subjected to poverty and trauma). This type of brain damage leads to the type of violence we observe and the inability to properly respect human life. Also the places you mentioned have less gun violence because they have less access to guns. You force a bunch of people into the violence of structural poverty then put guns everywhere and you get what we see here in the states.
