For those of you thinking the seller got robbed, remember that everything is worth exactly whatever someone else is willing to pay for it. Alex bought this collection when no one else would. And Alex is going to have to put in the work now to re-sell these books. Until Alex sells them, these books only have inherent value. It’s going to cost money to store them, sort them, grade them, etc. The previous owner probably didn’t have the money to do any of that. If they did, maybe they could have reached out to some other buyers and gotten a better price. But as it stood, it was occupying a storage locker that carries a cost, and they could have gotten damaged. Before, the comic books were costing them money every month. Now, they’re saving that monthly rental fee, and they have $10,000 in their bank account. These books are rare and valuable, but only in a very specific market. Comic book collecting itself is pretty niche, and these are a narrow sub-genre. They’re almost more valuable to cowboy/western collectors to comic book collectors. It’s like sci-fi books or horror books or romance books. It’s not Spider-man and it’s not Batman so someone out there is interested, but it’s not 10 someones or 100 someones. Alex has an avenue for advertising this collection to buyers that most other people don’t have. Already, in a matter of days, more people know that these books are for sale than in months of the old seller trying to off-load them. That’s because of Alex’s investment.

No way did Alex take advantage. He was reluctant to buy at all because it was risky for him to spend a lot when he has financials commitments. He made his offer not knowing just how valuable the collection was. The seller had the right to reject the offer if they weren't happy with it. Both parties are happy with the sale.

Here's a bit of trivia you might not know. First, I was a huge Louis L' amour fan (1975 +) had all the paperbacks. After he past, his family put out collections of unpublished pieces & things he written under different names. The one thing he'd never admit to when alive is being the writer of "Hopalong Cassidy". Only after his passing was the series credited to him.

Elsa Cisneros I only meant it in the context of being weary of others. Alex and his family are amazing, wonderful people but sadly there are also people willing to take advantage of a situation. Garage doors are not the most secure barriers out there. I would think even popping the boxes in the house (short term) would be better - which admit he has done with the more high end 1st editions 💛. I just want the best for him and the whole family.

All those binders full of covers are incredibly valuable to other collectors. You've already hit gold, but for many people who are trying to collect golden age books they are far more likely to find coverless copies. When you have the skill to marry the cover to a naked book, they present far better. Not to mention getting a qualified label is still better than getting an incomplete on a slabbed book. If I lived closer I'd be camped out on your doorstep. Great find.

Great idea for him to sell those on too. But why would you be camped out in front of his garage? To read the comics or buy some? Email him or call his shop if you want to buy any of them he'll ship it to you. Just asking as I thought it amusing.

The movie adaptation of "The Squaw Man" was the FIRST feature film shot in Hollywood. Shot by Cecil B. DeMille in 1913. Right when the first movie studio was built in Hollywood itself. (There were some movies being made prior to that in Los Angeles, starting around 1909, but in downtown, not Hollywood, and I believe they were all short subjects.)

I think there's no doubt about that you'll get your money back, and then some! Yeah, it might take some time, but you already got $2000 back, so the last $8000 shouldn't take too long, especially not taken the rarity and condition of many of the comics in mind + all the movie posters, which I would expect to be quite valuable too. I think it's safe to say that you hit the jackpot with this one!

I hope the gentleman got all his joy from collecting because at $1 a comic when you think of buying them, storage at home and then storage fees at a locker for at least 3 months (if not years?) and then stress of not being able to find buyers and then settling for less than half just shows you can’t count on a collection increasing in value. It will be interesting to see if there is a big market for comic books or if they’ll just end up at auction sold in lots. That comic book stores weren’t interested seems weird unless the market is dying. I think Alex will make a profit due to all his leg work though.

Having an entire run of a comic greatly enhances their value, be sure to mention that when you send them off! But you probably know that.

People, mostly my dad, used to say, see you in the funny pages!

That was a common expression in the United States in the World War II generation. "See you in the funny papers" or 'funny pages' depending on where you lived. But that was referring not to comic books, but the comic section of the newspaper.

Such a cool collection of comics! Nice that you showed the comic book website! Going to look up my comics at some point, got heaps mainly late 80s and early to mid 90s I think, before it got too expensive to collect!
