Ls3 Simplicity Best bang for your buck Proven for years
@johnsteil92458 жыл бұрын
I agree for the time being. The LS has been around for far longer than the Coyote and I think that helps the LS with the 'bang for the buck' aspect. Spending 1/3 of available cash for a used Coyote block possibly took up a lot of what 'could have been'. Only time will tell how much potential the Coyote has.

The Ford 5L is a good motor if you have the money and room but from a practical point of view the LS wins hands down. I'm a builder and have done a half dozen LS engines for friends dropping them into various vehicles, mostly swaps and there are literally millions of them out there. When you can go to the junk yard for $500 and buy a good used engine with harness, clean it up, bolt in a few go fast goodies for another $500, do a harness upgrade, reflash and install a high pressure fuel pump and Corvette fuel filter/regulator for another $500, exhaust, mounts, cooling and misc. for $500, you've swapped in a modern, fuel injected, 350-400 hp engine with tons of performance and driveability for less than $2500 all in and all fun. You can't buy a Coyote for less than 5 Grand that I've seen and I have a friend that did swap one into a '67 Mustang, major problems with size and the expense involved. A good motor just not for the masses ..............

HP/CI is a stupid measurement. Consider that the coyote will be running at a higher rpm, flowing more air, when it makes it's peak power in comparison to the slower turning LS. If you're flowing more air, you're also burning more fuel. Even though the Coyote has a smaller displacement, it is likely using that displacement less efficiently than the LS. If you really want to compare volumetric efficiency, compare. HP/(CI*RPM) not HP/CI. A more useful measurement is which makes more horsepower per lb? I could put a 19L cummins in my car that makes 700hp, but it wouldn't do me any good since it weighs 2 tons.

You took a 5.0 out of a f-150 and compared it to an engine that has a extra 1.2L of displacement, picked conditions that favored the L's engine and crowned it the winner. So, um....WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T YOU USE THE 6.2 THAT CAME IN THE F-150? I mean seriously, wtf is this? It's up 1.2 liters of displacement, of course its gonna make more power and torque. 6.2 sohc "takeout"= $2-2.7k. You paid 3k for a 5.0 truck engine? This is complete bullshit. Compare shit equally. What's wrong with people now and days? That's the thing though, you could've just re-ringed the Ford 6.2 and had custom cams ground and came out waaaaayyyy cheaper, but- then ford would've won something, and we can't have that now can we?
@ND4SPDspecV8 жыл бұрын
I can't believe I'm standing up for the ford motor buuuuuttttttt.... the coyote may be down 1.2L of displacement but it also has twice as many valves and four times as many cam shafts as the LS3 and revs a solid 1k rpm higher. The 5.0 is what ford put in their muscle car, the LS3 is what Chevy put in theirs. Stock for stock in those applications they're within 10hp of each other. Sounds like dramatic butt hurt ford fan boy excuses to me

Artchred tape measure size. The LS3 has quite a bit more displacement. What is it...376 cubic inches or so?? No question the LS3 will put down more power. The old saying still stands...no replacement for displacement”. However I have a F150 truck with the 5.0 coyote that puts down 380lbs of torque at 4200rpm STOCK. I find it odd they increased the torque by 10-15 pounds over stock with 10k dollars LOL. I’m no Ford fan boy...drove Chevy my entire life and my F150 is my first Ford...still got my Silverado. But something stinks about their final results. They made good torque improvement in the LS ( no surprise) but only 15 more pounds on the Ford ????
@177SCmaro6 жыл бұрын
JohnnyRebKy Don't judge the 5.0 too harshly. You have to keep in mind it's a modern, high flow, high efficiency 4 valve engine out of the box. That means it's difficult to improve on. At 380lb/ft of torque from just 5L that's 78lb/ft per liter. The LS3 at 425lb/ft of torque from 6.2L is 68.6lb/ft per liter. If the 5.0 was as large as the LS3 it would be making over 480lb/ft of torque out of the box, before any improvement.

This may be a silly question but here goes anyways. What does power per cubic inch or power per litre have to do with anything when it comes to going faster? I can see power per pound of the engine but what does the internal dimensions have to do with anything? Externally, physically, the small block chevy is smaller and lighter, a metric that equates to going faster on the race track (less weight=profit), not how much power it makes for the internal displacement of the engine. I've just always wondered that.

LS Dyno Results have been posted --> www.lsxtv.com/tech-stories/engine/update-ls3-vs-coyote-budget-shootout-ls3-dyno-results-are-in/ We are sorry for how long this has taken. We had experienced some oil pressure issues which are NOW resolved. But we were on the dyno and had the issue, had to rebuild the engine and then reschedule the dyno session.
@Laviathan507 жыл бұрын
For HP/Cu.In. the Coyote will win imo. The LS is popular for swaps because: 1.) it has greater displacement in a smaller package (Due to having 1 single cam) so you can shove it in a Miata 2.) Its un-complicated due to using dated tech (i.e. pushrod) 3.) its cheap. The Coyote is: A) Much More Efficient due to its DOHC, and VVT ( this is why the motor is bigger) B) Superior technology B) is much more stout outta the box I think of it like comparing Turbo's to P.D. Superchargers. The Turbo, like the coyote, is: A) Much more efficient B) Can make a lot more power P.D. Superchargers are: A) Cheaper B) Less Complex C) Smaller packaging (Easier to install)

Back then, GM, Ford and Mopar all had great big blocks but I'd have to give the edge to Mopar with big blocks. They had so many great muscle cars and motors - especially the 426 Hemi. +angelo howard Who cares what it displaces. The only measure of a performance engine is power, reliability, weight, cost and physical size. One engine is a stuck as a high winding DOHC with a limited displacement, the other is a large displacement engine stuck with two valves and push rods. Frankly, inside that budget I don't know why the LS isn't at least 7 liters if they really want to make the coyote pay for having a limited displacement.
@andrewfarrell43126 жыл бұрын
The 5.0 Ford v/s 6.2 Chevy is absolutely fair,in my opinion. An engine is basically a large air pump. The 6.2 may have a larger displacement, but it is an OHV/pushrod engine. The amount of air &fuel it can move efficiently is limited by the RPM range,and only having 2 valves per cylinder. The Ford can turn alot more Rpms and is much more efficient throughout the rpm range,especially tword the top end, due to the dohc/4valve design. That being said, I am a Chevrolet man,through and through. Always have been,and probably,always will. But the coyote is one hell of an engine. It makes an impressive amount of power,is versatile, and efficient. But when it comes to building a hod rod,resto mod, or any kind of engine swap, the LS will always be the more practical option. You can build the LS,and slap on some sort of forced induction or nitrous,and still have a smaller budget,and easier build

Hey if you bought a new block for the LS you should have done the same for the ford, even though it would have put you over budget. Was wondering if you were going to drop the compression in both motors, mount a couple of turbos and watch the little LS really outshine the coyote.

GM LS7 7.0 v8, 90 degree bank angle, pushrod single cam in block valve train 16 valves, 11:1 compression ratio, 206KG 505 hp @6300 rpm, 470 ft lb @ 4800 rpm, plenum intake manifold, basically log headers, no variable valve timing. S85 power&torque:weight ratio, (2.113 HP/KG, 1.6 ft lb/KG) LS7 power&torque:weight ratio (2.45 HP/KG, 2.28 ft lb/KG The Ls7 outdoes the s85 is nearly everything and has FAR less technology. Now let's see what happens when the ls7 actually comes with more technology, Mazzanti Evantra's variant, 701 hp at 6600 rpm and a maximum torque of 848 Nm at 4500 rpm, woe that's overkill, and still has the 11:1 compression ratio and still more room to improve. Smaller, lighter, more torque, lower CoG, better power band and still more room for improvement through aftermarket parts. I'll warn you not to argue because I can literally write a research paper on this subject and already have valid evidence proof, sources for this argument readily bookmarked.

Joe Robertson Used but machined = REFURBISHED... Not new... FUCKTARD. Modified and New do NOT have the same definition. Do they not teach that sort of shit where you live. There's no material added to replace what was removed during the machining process, so now components aren't the same size, shape, thickness etc. compared to how they were designed and stresses act different accordingly.
@BnMGarage8 жыл бұрын
2 valve vs 4 valves, pushrod vs DOHC, the coyote has the superior more advanced design. So it does make sense to compare the 2. and the machined block has 2 extra cubes. That helps with power, not much but definitely won't put it below stock.
@scottthompson2928 жыл бұрын
Stephen Ayeni I hope this doesn't come across too aggro (I have a tendency to seem angry when I'm not) but the more efficient heads of the coyote can still stuff only so much air into the cylinders. All that technology won't put 25% more air in so how is it a fair comparison to put the coyote against a motor that has 25% more displacement? As you can probably guess it takes about 145 cubes for the LS3 to overcome the superior design of the coyote. Notice how they didn't go for the LS2 even though it has the same displacement as the LS3? My biggest issue is how the coyote was handicapped with a piss poor budget. The LS engines have been around for ages and has a massive aftermarket following so there's loads of cheap parts on offer. Compare this to the relatively new coyote, and there's not as many aftermarket options as yet (more are coming...) Add to this the fact you need 2x more valves and springs, 4x more camshafts, a much longer timing belt with loads more pulleys etc. and $10k evaporates rather fast. At the end of the day I can see no reason to blow $10k on rebuilding these motors when there are crate motors out there for far less money.

They wasted all that money on rebuilding the Coyote when they could have just boosted it! Your LS POS needs all the Forged internals to be boosted...LOSS goes to GM. You see the Coyote already had all the forged internals from the factory, they designed this test to make sure the Coyote lost. Rebuilt the Coyote where it never needed it! The truck block is not an advantage...it makes 70 HP less from the factory...again rigged test!!!! Now lets talk Windsor 351...The real competitor to the LS cause the LS was designed by duplicating what the Windsor is. Even port Spacing, Timing, main caps and firing order. LOSS = GM. cant do shit without stealing it from another manufacturer!
