You too can prevent muzzy misfires. Guns that load from the front can be inherently finicky and susceptible to environmental factors centerfire rifles shrug off with indifference. That’s part of the reason you generally get a special season. It’s simply harder. Equal parts challenge and frustration, getting your muzzleloader to go bang no matter what takes extra thought and care. And even with that thought and care, “stuff” happens. Mark Boardman and Ryan Muckenhirn chat through ways to ensure your muzzleloader performs optimally in the moment of truth.

The PH of your water is tremendously important, electrolyte and mineral supplements are also essential if you drink R.O. filterd water or distilled water. I find it interesting.

I also load cold and stay cold. My inline stays in the trunk till it gets shot. Which is either at a deer or at the end of the hinting week. My fllintlocks are loaded and unloaded every day. And I reprime much more often.

I'd like a podcast on water supplements, but I suppose I'd also like a cartridge talk on the 7.5 Swiss.

Great advice on the firing pin. Mine was so bad from shooting T7 and I had no idea it should be cleaned every time. It was really corroded. The one on my CVA can be taken out with a screwdriver.

Just a pinch of black horn 209 in my coffee every morning keeps my body fired up and less tentative to having miss fires through out the day. Lol

You talked about 209 and Percussion Primers, what ever became of the old Top Hat Muzzle Loader Primers ? I haven't seen them advertised in many years. I'll stick to my Real Black Powder, it's pretty much a must for anybody with a Flintlock also. Years ago Hunters used to take small kiddie balloons to protect the muzzle ,we also used them in the Army back in the 1970's with the M16 to keep the rain out.

@vortexnation have you guys done a 10 min talk or podcast on hunting packs and which you prefer? Whether it's a day pack or multiday, of you haven't would that be something you would consider?

Kuiu has my vote, I've had really good experience with my packs from them. Ranging from day pack for turkey and whitetail, run and gun archery/rifle hunts for saddle/still/ tracking/ground blind hunting opportunities in Michigan to full blown multi day back country rifle and archery elk/mule deer hunts in the rugged terrain of Idaho, loaded with camp and meat.... Never had a let down with hundreds of miles and thousands of pounds put on them.

10:44 We have 2 muzzy seasons here in VA. My rifle will stay "cold" during those times, but I put inside for the 2 weeks of rifle in-between. Our falls have had above average temps lately, too. I've been using BH209 in a Triumph for a few seasons now. This past year, I was unloading the gun by firing on the last day...primer pop, primer pop, etc x 5. I couldn't believe it, so I pulled the breech at the truck, believing that the flash hole was clogged. To my surprise, the powder had gotten wet, I mean dripping wet. Flash hole was obviously clogged now because I just fired 6 primers down it. Would thermo cycling have caused this degree of condesation? I had a thought my 2 or 4 yr old had tossed their sippy cup on it, and it leaked as the gun was on the rear seat floorboard. As stated, this is how I normally store my loaded muzzy during fall and have only ever had a missfire from #11 caps before I got into 209s. Post script. 2 days prior, I had an opportunity at a buck that had been eluding me lately. I guess divine providence saved him and my sanity that day if I had had a misfire. Thanks, guys. I absolutely love these podcasts!

Talk about flintlocks. The skilled hunters use those instead of the modern black powder rifles that shoot 200 plus yards.

How about things non hunters dont know that hunters take for granted. Like do you put the deer on the hood and clean it at home, or field dress it. How do you carry the animal? Stuff like that. Im an inspiring hunter but besides birds I haven’t hunted.
