I have owned a 300 Ultra Mag since 2005... it's a Remington Sendero... I have a muzzle break and it's a piece of cake to shoot...my 10-year-old grandson shoots it off of a lead sled and shoots it very well.. Ive shot 18 elk with this gun and they just fall over dead when the gun goes off...yes it's that good...lol... best load I found was Reloders 25 96 grains ...Nosler accubond 180 grains...great load...thanks for the post

I've been watching you guys for 4 years. You've accompanied me on many long road trips for work and many hours of simply killing time. Love every minute of the podcast, and have learnt an absolute ton. I haven't laughed this hard at one of the episodes as I did this one with the "intervention." Cheers from Canada. I hope to have a beer with all of you one day.

Love my 300 RUM! I load 175gr Barnes LRX @ 3320fps in a factory Rem 700 AWR. Comfort is relative, you can’t pay attention to the recoil if you’re focused on executing the shot!
@mikedebear
@mikedebear 10 ай бұрын
One benefit of all that recoil inducing gas pressure is the efficiency of a muzzle brake. We installed a LOT of brakes on bolt guns in our shop, and as a Weatherby repair shop we had plenty of first hand experience with the 30-378- with and without a brake. The 30-378 and the 300 RUM were both pussycats with a brake; just try to avoid firing them from an overhead covered position or your sinuses would curse you. The recoil was comparable to a .308 and we shot them all day long without complaint. Love those heavy 30's

I own a 300RUM I bought new in December of 2000. Remington 700 Sendero.26" stainless barrel. I can attest to it's recoil. If I'm going to shoot more than 5rds, I strap on my PAST recoil pad. I thought $36.00 a box of 20 in 2001 was excessive. Today it's more like $90.00 a box for the 180gr Scirocco. Very powerful round. The ending had me laughing me ass off on your guys piling "intervention" on Mark. So funny when he left the set with a death hold on the papers he had printed up for the podcast. Long live the 300RUM

It’s no different than any other time, just more marketing. Just don’t run out and buy things. If something is still around after a decade, probably a pretty good round. Where did all the Remington SAUM’s go? Or the WSSM cartridge’s go? If you like your RUM, be a RUM guy. I don’t hate innovation, I don’t hate marketing, but I don’t care for sheep that regurgitate nonsense created by marketing teams. I respect your RUM. 🍻

.300rum is my fav caliber(although .454 casull is closing the gap lol). My Rem 700 long range with a $400 Arken scope hits steel at a mile at Thunder Valley. The Ultradyne Apollo Max brake brings the recoil down to less than a .308. Joy to shoot all day long, just let the barrel cool after 2 or 3 rounds 😉👍

The 300 remington ULTRA magnum is not in the same category as a the 30noz and 300prc. The 300prc and 30noz have around the same case capacity. The 300rum is about 10-15% larger. I personally love my 338 rum running 185gr barnes tsx and ttsx using the same load and shoots the same size groups. About a month or two ago I finished building a 6.5-300 rum. It's definitely a hotrod and fun to reload for. So far I've developed loads for 127lrx and 130 eld-m. But I am also trying some heavier ones like the 153gr A-max. To be honest I prefer to shoot light for caliber bullets, I've just never been a fan of heavy for caliber bullets. I guess prefer the higher velocities, but I guess everyone has preferences. Hope everyone is having successful hunting seasons and staying safe out there.

@@colearmstrong2450 Have you ever used a Terminator muzzle break on any rifle? It allows you to focus on the shot instead of the recoil. I set it in a Magpul stock and made a 220SMK/H1000 load for it. I need to revisit the caliber and make a 155 and 175 load for it but man... does it burn a bunch of powder just making a ladder test 🤣. The ammo price sucks for 300 rum. It's at least a $100 a box. $5 or more a round. Being that Federal, Berger, and Hornaday all make 300prc ammo at $60 a box, much better off with a 300prc. Not to mention I see more rifles chambered in 300prc over the 300 rum now. Ammo cost I think is its biggest problem, it's an awesome, awesome cartridge

I bought a Remington Sendero .300 RUM at a local sporting goods store going out of business for $500. I was planning on going out west Elk hunting. I am 6'2 and 220 pounds and athletic. I loaded 180 Nosler Partition and shot a deer at 100 yards in the heart and it blew out a section the size of a bowling ball, too much for deer IMO. I was shooting close to 100 grains of RL 25, this thing kiched like a mule from a 12 pound rifle. I could never get a tag to hunt out west so I traded it for a S&W MP10 (.308) and I am very happy. don't miss the .300 RUM ever. I do like my 7MM Rem Mag.

I had to come back just to comment.. I've always wanted to own a 300 RUM, well that has since changed. I recently did load development for my boss/brother in-law for his Remington 700 woodstocked, no muzzle break, and hardly much of a recoil pad.. From the first to the last shot, 30 rounds total. It was not really enjoyable 🤣I had to man tf up and try my hardest to not flinch. A hefty dose of Hodgdon US869 sitting under HBN Coated Nosler 180gr E-Tips coming out of the 26" barrel at 3,280fps! The load ought to kill an elk out to 900yd! I'm glad I found a one hole .6" load and that I won't have to do that again! haha the 40rd should last him a few hunting seasons. Also 300 RUM demands insane amounts of money for factory loads, especially right now.

The “7 em em” and everything else. Then my cousin got a 7 mm ultra mag. Or in my mind, the ULTRA MAG. (Big booming God like voice.) my cousin was a thin guy, thin and wiry, perhaps scrawny, you could say. Hunted a couple seasons with the ULTRA MAG, and then was back to the .270. Dad still packs that “7 em em” everywhere, and I settled on the 30-06. Point? Hell there ain’t no point. I just like that story.

I have not printed out anything for work for several years now, however I think the situation of your podcast where you may need to access information quickly does justify it. And I know there have been episodes where Mark's printouts have added to the conversation because he had a fact ready at hand. Noah, I have a true pre 64 model 70 (1952 receiver) with a 24" unknown maker 338 06 barrel in an unknown maker synthetic stock and put a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 - i traded for the gun the way it sits sans the scope. With my reloads (nosler 210 part, fed 210 primer, 58grs of imr 4350), the gun is moa or less and absolutely hammers PA and NY whitetails. I use it as my dual use gun (deer and bear) but have not used the 338 06 on a bear yet. Easily have over 3 dozen deer with the gun. Reason i say dual use is in PA we have, in some areas, concurrent deer and bear season. Rather than shooting deer with a 375 weatherby or shooting bear with a (say) 257 roberts, the 338 06 with the 210 part easily downs whitetails and i have no doubt would bring down a big bear - in northeast PA the largest taken was like 860lbs (not saying a 338 06 was used, but if i had an 800+ lb bear in front of me, id have no issues using the 338 06). Great cartride. Highly recommended. Good luck.

I’ve got a 338/06 Ackley Improved, killed a few deer with it and it is a hammer! The beauty of the cartridge is that all the common bullets work great in it because they were initially designed for the win mag and weatherby. I primarily use the Speer 200gr hot core and find it to be excellent at 2800ish fps. The hot core aspect of it makes it a lightly bonded bull so it stays together and gives complete penetration on deer and it’s aerodynamic enough to make the longer ranges doable… Wonderful round and I have no regrets about choosing it 👍

Jim absolutely won the podcast when he questioned the "efficiency" paradigm. If you know what the cartridge does and you know what you're doing, BC means nothing. "this cartridge drops 50" vs. this cartridge drops 60"" means nothing when you're dialing in anyway. At that point, all that matters is energy.

It’s “supposed” to be a subsonic round suitable for hunting big game because of its “rotational” energy created by its 1 in 3 twist. I don’t really understand this as it still at subsonic speeds so that it can be suppressed. While the gel tests look awesome I figured I’d request the Vortex experts might be able to explain this if indeed there’s anything to it. Thanks!

Lads I've had a Rem 700 LH stainless laminated in 300 RUM. Plain-Jane KDF styled muzzle brake on the 26" barrel. Best load for my hunting in Northern Alberta is a 180 grain Accubond (BC .500) over 95.0 grains of Reloader 25 and Fed 215 primer. My old Chrony said 3350fps and my new MagnetoSpeed confirms 3340-3355. This load has been dropping big bucks and moose for over 2 decades. I started out with Remington factory loads of 180 grain Swift Sciroccos. That bullet is amazing for bang-flops and if I could've got some I'd have used them in my handloads. The lightest I've loaded were Barnes 130 grain TTSXs at 3700+ fps!

I have never had a feeding problem. Make sure all rounds are pushed to the back of the magazine box and the belts are on top of each other. On a Weatherby Mark V, make sure you do not lose any of the shims that go under front trigger guards. That will change feeding angle.

One thing you have to remember, if it wasn't for the inefficient cartridges before, you wouldn't have the efficient cartridges we have now. In all reality, they are the forefathers of what we have today. They were the reason to make a better cartridge. They were the example to improve upon but boy can I can't wait to build my 28 nosler 😂

Popular youtubers have built a custom ultra long range rifle in 30-378. He had a 31" barrel He has an incredibly consistent 250gr A-Tip load that leaves that long barrel at just over 3200fps. B.C. is 0.878. It carries 4000 ftl/bs too 500 yards... It's an incredle rig.! Been trying to convince him to work up a load for a 110gr, or even the 130gr Barnes TTSX.... I really want to see a "legitimate big game rifle exceed 4000 fps with a hunting load" then I wanna see a 220gr RN pushed over 3300fps for closer shots. Let's get the 378 based cartridges on here and sing their praise

The PRC stuff RUM etc is fascinating. super SUPER excited to hear a 10min on the upcoming 7mm PRC. Edited: sorry I am one of those big wheel guys however plenty of purpose. In Norther CA you need to defeat all the gates to reach the better areas. legalities are irrelevant when a company like SPI owns all of the land, questionable acquired from the train days.

The RUM doesn't have a belt, but it does have a rebated rim, and one could argue the rebated rim causes more feeding problems than a belt. I get that the belt isn't useful, and that it adds a step or two to the reloading process, but I think when you consider the amount of use we have gotten from belted cases, the record speaks for itself. The 7mm Rem Mag and the .300 Win Mag remain among our most popular cartridges, and for good reason, they are incredibly useful. I think if a belted cases offers the performance you are looking for, use it. I won't be giving up my 7mm Rem Mag any time soon, despite more modern beltless cases that offer similar performance, because the 7mm Rem Mag is still the most popular, the easiest to find ammo and components for, and logistics matter when we are in an ammo crunch. The belt thing gets overplayed.

Another awesome episode. And, again, Mark gets roasted. But we need Mark. Otherwise, we would have too many trees. I have been reading a book entitled "Hunter's Guide to Long Range Shooting." The author goes through the history of rifles and also includes the development of the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum. Each round has a use. .300 RUM is not the most efficient of rounds. But it sends a lot of energy at impact at a long distance. And it recoils a lot on the shooter to get it there. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If you want the largest affordable production round, this would be it. But you can do just as well with the .300 Win Mag. Or even the .300 WSM, which is doing quite well at 1,000 yards or less. Check out Rogee Productions. These guys in New Zealand are shooting a Savage 110 Ultralite .300 WSM from hillside to hillside, hunting on public land. And plenty of people have even hunted long range with .30-06. Others like the 7 Rem Mag.

I’ve owned a 300 RUM since 1999. Long range work it’s very difficult to beat. To beat it your basically getting into 338 Lupa. Or 338 RUM and more punishment by far to the shooter.

I bought my first 300 RUM around 2000. It was a stainless 700 sporter, in plastic stock with a Limbsaver pad. Everyone warned me I would be blown into oblivion, shooting the Remington max power 180 load. I grimaced squeezing the first shot off, and bang! The grimace changed to a huge grin! What recoil? About like my 300 mag, plus, it shot sub moa at 100! I just don't understand guys who declare the 300 RUM kicks too hard?

When I got into hunting I bought a 270 my friend bought a 300 mag. I would fire a box he would fire 3 rounds...but it isn't because of the recoil. Years later another friend gets into hunting. He goes down the same rabbit hole. Has to be a 300 mag. So he gets a sendero 300 mag. Tried getting it on the paper at 100 yards. On the paper. Something is wrong with the gun. No nothing it wrong with the gun it's your flinching. You see, something I have learned from being a man and a hunter, ex military and law enforcement of 25 years now...most people are full of shit. Especially hunters, ex military and law enforcement officers. Most people can't shoot like they say they can and most people with magnums can't shoot. There are some...but it's the analogy of the jacked truck all the accesories tail gaiting you with high beams on and you pull in the same place and a slack shoulder little guy gets out of it.

Own both a 300 RUM (M700) & 300 WM (M70). The rum is a way better shooter. Have killed elk & moose with it, taking it to shoot bison this fall. Is 300 RUM “inefficient”? Yep. I load 94g of powder in that cartridge compared to 74.0g for the 300WM for only a 200FPS velocity boost. Know what? I’m not shooting matches with it, i don’t care much about the higher recoil. Have yet to mind recoil that much when shooting at game.

I would love this also. I currently load for my 416 Taylor Improved and the 416 Remington. Both rifles are very accurate. I only have whitetails to hunt, occasionally a chance at a pig. I load the lighter bullets to higher speeds. 416 Taylor I run a 300 gr tsx at 2640 fps, and the 416 Remington I load 340 woodleigh pp at 2668 fps. Expansion has been excellent on whitetail with both loads. Also used the 350 Speer mag tip when I first got the Taylor at 2610 fps and that was a hammer on deer mainly because it was pretty soft for a 416 bullet.
