10MM VELOCITIES OUT OF A CARBINE VS A PISTOL

I tested the velocities out of a Roni G2-10 10mm Glock 20 with a 16 inch barrel versus a Glock G20. I used a chronograph and tested two rounds each of Civil Defense 60gr, Underwood Xtreme Defender 115gr and Barnes VorTX 155 gr. There was a huge increase in the Civil Defense and a moderate increase in the Xtreme Defender. Marginal in the Barnes.

These were the worst possible loads to compare. You should have been trying some heavier rounds with slower burning powders. These solid copper bullets (which are huge and reduce case capacity), with fast burning powders see no real gains in longer barrels. A 155-200gr bullet with a good slow burning powder like AA#9 or 800-X would gain 400-600fps.

I've thought about getting a carbine to pair with either my 9mm or 10mm. 2800 is about what you would get with a 5.56 carbine so that is impressive but civil defense is some super pricey ammo. Thanks for the video. It's got me thinking pretty hard. I was really hoping to see higher velocities with the more traditional weight bullets. Underwood is great stuff, also pricey as hell.

casey b for home defense if that would be the intention for a pistol round and even for concealed carry most people do not need to shoot past even 50 yards at anything. Ballistics at longer ranges is only for competition, military users and or perhaps some law enforcement departments as well.
@rbm6184
@rbm6184 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidescobar5366 A PCC should shoot accurately at least 100 yards. Longer barrel better muzzle velocity. A magnum pistol round does even better. Ballistics at longer ranges is also for hunting as well as defense. If a PCC won't shoot accurately with enough muzzle velocity at least 100 yards its no good to me. I will stick with my milsurp GM Inland .30 Carbine. I can shoot it accurately and with plenty of muzzle velocity out to 150 to 200 yards. Try that with any new modern PCC. They need to chamber a new modern PCC in .30 Carbine.

The lightweight hyper velocity boutique loadings aside, The Barnes 155gr load coincided with most of the other Chrony data on KZbin that indicates standard weight factory loaded 10mm has little to no ballistic advantage over similar .40sw loads.. Winchesters Ranger 155gr clocked in at +1100fps in TN9outdoors tests. Chrony testing indicates the only way to access the power of 10mm is to either buy boutique brands or roll your own. Otherwise its a glorified 40.

It's been a long time since I chrono'd factory 10mmAuto. The "standard" factory load for it in the 90's was a 170grTC at 1300fps. 180gr@1250fps. 200gr@1150fps(og Black Talon). Plinking loads tended to be lighter, I think the CCI Blazer was 200gr@1050 and Federal Eagle was 180gr at 1150fps. Those loads, I guess, got weenied down to recoil more like 40S&W as they probably sell better.
@davidbarbee1276

Yeah, you can find a particular loading to justify your opinion, but I shoot loads which are in the 640 to 700 ft.lbs energy range. Good for protection on the trails, especially with cast lead fn , like buffalo bore. There’s not a single .40 that even comes close, but there are leadings from almost every manufacturer who get to at least the mid 600’s. But sure, it’s not for everyone. But I don’t mind and I have thick heavy hands. The recoil doesn’t bother me.

My decades of experience with ammunition is it is necessary to use cartridges best suited for the firearm being tested. Using same ammo for rifle and pistols is a big mistake. Factory or home made cartridges for carbines are going to need much slower burning powders than that for sidearms with much shorter barrels. Please consider retesting with optimal ammo for different barrel lengths.

I am confused as I learn this stuff. For self defense, a ballistic gel test is used to determine the cavities produced within a 15 inch penetration. From those videos, it appears to me, that the heavier grain (but slower) expanding bullets do more damage in the ballistic gel with respect to the 10mm. I think the carbine would be awesome, but using a 220 grain bullet and pushing it to higher velocities than the pistol. Would like to see ballistic gel test on that.
@texasbeast239
@texasbeast239 6 жыл бұрын
I think you have it totally right. The light, fragmenting rounds lose momentum and break up in a very short distance if they meet with any resistance at all. And the light, non-frag rounds just overpenetrate like infamous 9mm's. Quality bonded JHP's still seem to be the way to go for defensive uses, because they hit the hardest, expand the most, and dump their energy completely in the bad guy. The fast, light, non-frag rounds might be great for hunting since they go through and through--ballistic gel, that is. The light, frag rounds are probably only good for making impressive, gimmicky video commercials.

@mattcaldwell9343
@mattcaldwell9343 3 жыл бұрын
@@texasbeast239 uuummm.... NO. Not even close there guy. A heavy bullet will ALWAYS have more penetration than lighter faster loads especially when using a hollow point. The faster the hollow point is pushed the larger the expansion meaning more energy dumped sooner and not enough weight to keep pushing through. Light and fast loads tend to UNDER penetrate because of this. And infamous 9mm over penetration? Do you have any clue whatsoever as to what you are spewing on about? Obviously not. The 9mm hollow point ammunition of today has been researched and developed FAR more than any other caliber on the market due to its popularity in all fields, military, civilian, law enforcement etc. Because of that the 9mm is now out performing ALL other standard service calibers in expansion, penetration standards, damage to tissue on and on and on. Go read the FBI reports and the justification for why they went back to the 9mm, go get some training, educate yourself and stop spewing bullshit you know nothing about.
@mattcaldwell9343
@mattcaldwell9343 3 жыл бұрын
@@texasbeast239 oh and as for FMJ rounds, the 9mm still has LESS penetration in real situations. I dont give 2 shits about a gel test you saw on KZbin once, there is a reason we use 9mm in combat. No its not the BS you heard your grandpa or someone on youtube say, its because combat has proven that in the real world, when a 9mm FMJ (because we are not allowed to use hollow points) passes through a HUMAN BODY not gel, it will continue down range LESS than larger heavier calibers thus creating less chance of innocent people being harmed (collateral damage/friendly fire). So again, please get some real education and shut up.

using the same weapons for the test could you do one with standard 10 mm loads that are made today versus standard 10 mm loads when it was Bren 10 and a Colt Delta Elite was the only thing you could buy to shoot 10 millimeter? I contend 10 mm now is downloaded so bad it's barely above the 40 cal. went before the pecking order was 44 Magnum 357 Magnum in 10 mm and depending on what you got 10 millimeter 357 hit switch it was up there with power and velocity thanks I enjoyed the video
