Filmed November 1st 2024. It's nice to be back 'home' with one of my more typical videos like this one where it's mostly my normal subscribers watching. My previous video has mostly non-subscribers watching, and I would guess most of those non-subscribers are angry 20 something 9mm fanboys. They don't behave like normal gun people, because they aren't gun people at all. I don't know what they are but they aren't normal lol.

@@exothermal.sprocket I'm gonna be honest, this all started in 2018 when people non stop started coming to my channel which probably had 5,000 subs at the time, and telling me that 9mm rivals .357 Magnum. Over and over and over for a couple months. Come to find out, MAC made a video called "9mm rivals .357 Magnum and spanks the .38 Special" or something to that effect, so his people were coming over and going on and on about it on my channel. I didn't even own a single 9mm pistol at the time when this was happening. So I bought a 9mm pistol and was like hold my beer, and started doing a ton of 9mm VS .357 Mag and 9mm VS .38 Special videos, granted in my 4" 686 VS 4" Security 9. In many of the videos, even .38 Special+P seemed to do better than 9mm, and .357 Mag made the 9mm look like child's play. These people freaked out completely, looking for any and every excuse to call me out, example "you used 125 gr .38 Special and 124 gr 9mm NOT FAIR!! Should have used 125 gr with both!!!" or "a 4 inch revolver isn't fair to compare to a 4 inch pistol because the chamber is included in a semi auto, you need a 3 inch revolver!" There's dozens of things they would complain about. So my response was to then buy my Taurus 605 2" barrel .357 Magnum snub and compare .357 Magnum from the snub to 9mm from the 4" Security 9, giving the 9mm pistol an advantage of barrel travel. In every video the .357 Magnum smoked the 9mm, and these 9mm fanboys would freak out more, looking for anything and everything to pick on about how I 'unfairly made the 9mm look bad'. I realized back then how funny it was that these people (9mm fanboys) don't actually want the truth, they want MAC style truth where he shot PMC Starfire .357 Mag from a snub VS Gold Dot 9mm+P from a subcompact pistol and that PMC .357 Magnum sucked. Since then I do realize this crowd will show up angry to my 9mm videos with a title that suggests it's not the best cartridge in the world, and that motivates me because it's so funny. Attention is views, and views is a little money to make more content. With entertainment there's no such thing as bad advertisement.

Great video. Excellent work. 10mm is a wonderful round with potential. You are correct stating that 10mm autos have reliability issues. Manufactures are finding it very hard to engineer a semi-auto platform. The answer I most received from gun companies was that; the loadings and pressures for 10mm are all over the scale going from almost 9mm/.38 performance to unbelievable high end power range with specialty ammo producers and they cannot produce a single platform to cover this. I personally know with a 10mm semi-auto you must modify, shoot, modify and shoot. If not, buy a revolver!

As Sam mentioned ; This 10mm would be in the neighborhood of a " Dual Purpose " load . Penetrate enough for Deer , but * Not Totally Rediclous * for ( human ) Defense . At least in the context to a hard cast 10mm . This 180gr .357 performed exactly how I expected. With a long 180 gr bullet , loaded to SAAMI COL , at 35K pressure Cap , it gives up too much energy and momentum compared to a good 158gr load . If you're handloading for a strong gun with a long cylinder , to be able to properly seat a 173 Keith , or LBT LFN 187 gr , using the Traditional Pressure Level ( the one expressed in CUP ) things would be better .

Yep, you can fire .40 s&w rounds out of a 10mm revolver. It is really no different than firing .38 spcl out of a .357 mag revolver. To my knowledge, it is unsafe to fire a .40 S&W out of a 10mm semi-auto pistol because it headspaces at the mouth of the case.

I like the larger, wider hammer on your 10mm revolver, Sam. Looks like the type I have on my M646 .40 S&W L frame. Easy to reach with the thumb since the angle is better, too. I have 500 custom cast hard lead alloy .357 bullets weighing 175 grains in the Keith SWC style. They are similar to the old Lyman 173 gr LSWC (357424 I believe) that was too long to load in .357 mag brass unless you crimped over the front drive band. This bullet is a tiny bit shorter on the nose and a tiny bit longer on the shank so it loads perfectly in either .357 mag brass or .38 spcl brass and still keeps the heavier weight. I only punch paper with it using 00 gr AAC #9 for a very comfortable to shoot load with excellent accuracy. But, I'll bet it would be an excellent hunting bullet for deer or black bear when loaded up to 1200 fps. Probably punch right through a deer. BTW, have you tried .40 S&W in your 10mm moon clips? Seems like it should work just fine.

Second ammo was the Speer Gold Dot - 1,109 FPS average from the 5" M&P, I got 1,106 FPS from the 610. Third ammo was the Federal HST - 1,081 FPS average from the 5" M&P, I got 1,128 FPS from the 610. Another great vid and review. I love my 10mm but really, the .357 Mag and 10mm are so close that it only depends on the exact loading/platform that determines the actual superiority. Both are 'enough' to do just about anything you need to do with a handgun. Both will stop a charging grizzly bear if applied accurately to the bear's skull (not that I want to see any grizzly bear dispatched if not absolutely necessary) and both will stop a human predator even more decisively.

Great test Sam! The problem, as I see it, with the 610 is it's on an N frame. The 10mm may compare favorably with a .357 but the N frame is really better suited to the .44 Mag, .41 Mag and .45 Colt. All of those rounds, competently loaded will outperform the 10mm. That doesn't necessarily mean the 10mm isn't a great revolver round. But there are better performing hunting rounds in the same platform. Having said that the 10mm in an N frame is probably a better antipersonnel gun due to the moon clips, reduce recoil and faster recovery times of hot loaded ammo. I've never shot a 610 but have lusted after them since they were introduced. One of these days...
@GunSam
@GunSam Ай бұрын
Recoil of the model 610 is fantastic. The 686 .357 Mag is average for recoil, my model 69 .44 Mag is terrible for recoil. The 610 recoils like a .45 ACP 1911, and that's the honest truth. It often surprises me how I shoot some ammo that equates to 650 ft lbs energy or more, and all I feel is a .45 ACP recoil. My brain always has trouble making sense of it.

@@GunSam I've had a few N frames but the only one that has stayed is my Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. I carry level 2 .45 Colt loads in that but will move up to my Redhawk if I want to shoot Ruger Only loads in a DA. I've always wanted a Mountain Gun in .41 Magnum but I would probably load it with loads that would be very close to your hot 10mm loads. To me those loads were more what gun writers and LEO's were wishing for when they were asking Smith for a .41 Magnum. I would really like to have a model 69 but I would treat it like it was a .44 Special.

Sam, do you have to use Moon clips in that revolver it might sound like a crazy question, but I was told that you had to. Just curious.
@GunSam
@GunSam Ай бұрын
No, not unless you are shooting .40 S&W that will not headspace on the case mouth correctly. The 10mm headspaces on the case mouth and shoots fine with no moon clip. The only issue without using a moon clip with 10mm ammo is that the extractor won't push out the empties. Generally they will fall out if you invert the revolver, or they pluck out easy too. The moon clip just makes unloading and reloading easier. I often shoot it with no moon clip.

Very informative, thanks. For the 357 a longer barrel will be more appropriate for 180gr, at least 6" for that weight. Will be interesting to see the velocity and terminal performance gains between the 357 and 10mm with longer "hunting length" barrels 6-8" for handguns or 16"+ for carbines. 357 will likely gain a lot more than the 10mm, which seems to be more optimized for shorter barrels (4-5")
@GunSam
@GunSam Ай бұрын
You actually gain very little velocity from 4" to 6" with 180 gr, you will gain a little more with 158 gr and even more than that with 125 gr. Going 4" to 6" bumps a normal 180 gr up maybe 20 FPS. Now if it's hot hot ammo like Buffalo Bore 180 gr you might see 100 FPS more in a 6", but stuff like Remington 180 gr there's very little change

.357 Mag got neutered by the introduction of lightweight snub nose revolvers with weak cylinders (sometimes made of titanium) and subsequent lowering of SAAMI pressure limit for these (down to 35000 psi). I mean use the 10mm bullets the same way .357 and .429 are used for 357mag/38spl and 44mag/44spl. We could make a 40mag/40 special to give us power/pressure range from a soft .40s&w up to 10 mm "+p". Since ammo manufacturers are already making the bullets and they're getting more popular, they might be more willing to try it out. The case design seems the tricky part. 1st how/where to source the cases. Then how much re-tooling it would take to make them. That might give manufacturers pause.

@@buttercup8583 Still not understanding. 10mm "lite" is .40S&W. it's a slightly shorter case and runs lower power loads than 10mm. That's the same as 38 Special to .357mag and 44 Special to 44mag. There's also a 10mm magnum on the market that has a longer casing than 10mm auto.

@@exothermal.sprocket I was using American caliber designation to demonstrate that it would only be slightly smaller at .40 caliber than .41 caliber. Let's say I want to use the existing and increasingly popular 10mm bullets and load them to the power of .41 Magnum. A revolver case would need to be sources/developed for it. I would also consider using the same 10mm bullets in slightly shorter cases to create a special version, again in revolver cases. There would also be additional bullets constructed to take advantage of the fact that they're chambered for revolvers and the increased power. I have never heard of a "10 mm Magnum revolver" round, but that would assume I know all rounds. I know very little. If there is in fact a 10 mm magnum set up like a .41 magnum, I hope that gains popularity.

@@buttercup8583 We're mixing rimmed vs. rimless cartridges in our discussion, probably why the confusion either way. 10mm as a standardized cartridge holds less capacity than the .357mag as a standardized cartridge. If you want more power than 10mm cartridge, there's a 10mm magnum cartridge, being longer than the standard 10mm cartridge. I don't know of any semi-autos chambered for 10mm magnum however. To load a 10mm cartridge to the power of 41 magnum, that is simply not possible without grenading a firearm. A full pressure .357magnum is more powerful than a full pressure 10mm. To take 10mm and load it far higher than even .357magnum is not possible. As far as .40 caliber (not cartridge) is concerned, there's been a couple of historical rimmed cartridges for revolvers, those being .38-40 (.44-40 necked down to .40 caliber), .41 Short Colt and .41 Long Colt (neither are made anymore, both are nearly .40 caliber despite the name). For whatever reason, most rimmed revolver cartridges have either been .357 caliber or .41 caliber (41 Remington Magnum). If you want rimless semi-auto cartridges, you have .40 S&W cartridge, 10mm, cartridge, and 10mm magnum cartridge. Wikipedia is a good source of these things, simply refer to "list of handgun cartridges".

Geez. That particular 357 round is below expansion threshold. Maybe it would expand if it was fired out of an 18" carbine who knows. Come on Remingtonm, do not print the words MAGNUM or HIGH TEMINAL PERFORMANCE anywhere on that box of 357's 😂 And I bet they were fairly expensive to boot. Oh well save the brass, thanks for the demonstration.

Those SJLHPs don't seem to work as well as SJLSP. The 100 gr Federal soft points expand to be indistinguishable from GDHP of the same weight.

If you are talking like .327 Federal Magnum, yeah those soft points basically are hollow points that are lead-filled in the middle. Most likely the 85 gr Hydrashok filled to weigh 100 gr. The .32 Hydrashok is more like a Gold Dot in construction than a normal Hydrashok.

I'm disappointed in the 357 magnum 180 gr. Maybe it would do well in a rifle but in a 4'' barrel it's just not impressive. I've never seen an unfired bullet that is rounded in the rear when I've reloaded ammo or when I've disassembled loaded factory rounds. Maybe something happened in the gun or gel that's unique to this particular bullet. The 10mm did very well IMO

Almost every 180 gr .357 Magnum hollow point performs like this one, they tend to not reach 500 ft lbs energy because the case capacity for powder is limited. Now Buffalo Bore 180 gr is a different story.
@frankbrowning328
@frankbrowning328 Ай бұрын
@@GunSam Yes, agreed. There is the ability to push it fast enough and have a bullet the expands properly but not from most sources with Buffalo Bore being a good loading in 180 gr. It would be interesting to see if these (and others of similar velocity in 180 gr) perform well in a 16-20'' rifle.

Why aren’t you using Underwood or Buffalo Bore ammo for the test? You are leaving so much performance on the table. 100-150 fps on the Underwood 200gr for 10mm is a quick example. Remington ammo is a poor choice lately…

It's a "moderate" pressure load. There's TONS of that stuff from the big brands. If you want hot 180gr, you got to go to Buffalo Bore, DoubleTap, Grizzly. Underwood doesn't do as well in some rimmed cartridges for whatever reason. Guy tested the 180gr Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman in 6-inch GP100 and averaged mid 900 ft-lb range. Their jacketed XTP load won't be quite as high due to increased bore friction.
