+Wendy Domino Nah that teacher isn't mean.. That kid is in 5th grade and it is his own decision to not get lunch if all he has to do is do his work. People pay tax money for kids to go to school and learn so they can get an education and keep society moving forward, not to sit around most likely playing in class and then cry when they don't get food. I'd rather my kid learn his lesson from not doing his work by not eating 1 meal out of his day than to get held back and go through that year again. You guys act like that 1 meal is going to kill him....

Layla LaDouceur No, I don't. The kid was told if he did the work he could eat. At that point, it is his decision on whether or not he eats. He can do the work and eat, or not do it and not eat. At that point, it is the kid that is holding himself back, not the teacher. If the kid did the work and the teacher didn't let him eat, then it is the teachers fault.

When I was in the 6th and 7th grade, my teacher assistant would throw out my lunch, and would regularly deny me lunch if I "didn't eat correctly". I am special needs, and that was unacceptable. My mom asked me why I would scarf down my dinner, and I told her why. Teacher was fired the next day.

I 100% agree with this man. I guaruntee you, that teacher was "personally offended" by the boy being "overweight" and decided he could stand to miss a few meals. Maybe his blood sugar was spiking without breakfast, how does she know? I used to teach elementary school. I started seeing the schools hiring these new teachers with smug judgemental attitudes towards their students for things like being overweight, poorly dressed kids, and began taking authority over kids they deemed to be needing punishment by denial of food, recess, bathroom breaks. I had students who had to go to the bathroom often because of health issues, and/or prescriptions they were taking to treat health issues like diabetics, undiagnosed diabetics! But, this teacher denied that man's son food for breakfast - food that is there at school for the children to eat. It gets tossed out - if uneaten or unused. This teacher's attitude sucks. If I was that student's parent, I would sue the school district. That's what we the people need to do, sue these smug people with elitist attitudes, like our out of control federal government spending trillions without the permission of we the tax payers, giving billions away to other countries!! Any company that mistreats or singles-out certain individuals to punish or to treat worse than others, should be sued.

Clinton K I'm not talking about breaking the law., I was more focussed on morality which isn't always the same as legal perspective. Legally, maybe she can do that but morally, you can't deny someone a meal. Like, maybe they are super poor. Biologically speaking, some of the high in fat conent foods are cheap and expensive foods are typically the healthier food options. So maybe the dad is a big guy because he always buys unhealthy as a result of finances. I was speaking from a place of - don't eff up a child's development perspective as opposed to a legal one.

Around the last 10 minutes they all convinced me to get something to eat so I went with about 6 minutes left on the clock to eat. The lady appeared at that time and yelled at me in front of everybody. Obviously as a nine year old who never got in trouble before, I was scared and cried of humiliation/embarrassment for being yelled in front of the entire cafeteria. I remember in 4th grade, my teacher had gotten sick of kids constantly asking to go to the bathroom, when they were just doing it to get out of class, and she made mandated bathroom breaks and if we didn’t use the bathroom at those breaks, and had to go at another time, we weren’t allowed to go. I can remember going into the lunch room after being denied a bathroom break and I sat at lunch unable to eat and I cried and sobbed because my stomach and bladder hurt so badly from not being allowed to use the bathroom. My teacher finally saw that and realized that I really did have to use the restroom, and she finally let me go. That day I just happened to need to use the bathroom at a different time then the “designated breaks”, it was horrible. Teachers should not restrict bathroom breaks and food. I know from experience that some kids abuse those privileges, but then those rules and punishments, punish those kids who aren’t doing any wrong.

Well if your child has low blood sugar im sure you would let the teachers and school nurse know. If there’s a health reason she would have let him go to second breakfast. I think the father should have fed his child or dropped him early for first breakfast. Or explained to the school that it’s crucial his son eats while at school. Because he may not afford food. Communication with adults is important because children do lie to get out of things. And many kids throw the food away because they weren’t really hungry

I had a friend in middle school who was diabetic and the school took away the entire lunch she brought from home. All because there was a candy bar, in case her blood sugar dropped. The school didn't even allow her to have her insulin on school grounds, not even in the nurses office. They considered anything, other than Tylenol, a illegal substance or an healthy lunch. (Despite only selling fried, greasy foods and ice cream) We had a class together after lunch, so I snuck my fun-size candy in my pocket. When she asked to go to the nurse, I was asked to follow so "she doesn't leave the school". She collapsed and I just barely caught her. I snuck the candy in her mouth, whispered, "eat this and hold on" and booked it as fast as one piggybacking a fellow teen could. An ambulance was called and her blood sugar was so low, she could've died. I was told that bit of sugar I gave her was the only thing that kept her. The school demanded she tell them who gave her the "drugs" and she refused. Their excuse to them nearly killing her was, "she got her fix somehow". Many lawsuits came on them for other reasons, but she didn't even tell her parents until we graduated that I was the one who gave her the candy. They thanked me for saving her and all I said was, "it was just a feeling I had that she'd need it." I didn't understand diabetes and still kinda don't. All I knew was her blood sugar was going to be low and I knew that I would be called to "walk" her to the nurse. If she didn't eat something, something bad would happen. I didn't think she could die, but that was a very sobering experience, knowing you may have saved someone by doing something as tiny as giving them some candy.

Just like to point out,,,,,there have been some exceptionally great teachers that I have met while I was at school and also when my kids were at school. When my daughter was old enough to help out and be it the teacher's aide, the teacher started bringing breakfast for her and my daughter while she worked. She bonded with this teacher and after many years she still has contact with this teacher. Those are the teachers that should be recognized especially when the student in their adult life remember the teachers that made a difference. Those are the teachers that I deeply respect.

Why are they comparing it to recess? You stress that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but deny him a chance to eat it. I don't get it, I really don't. Like yeah he's missing one assignment but c'mon.

You can’t deny any child food. It won’t benefit them: 1. They will be starving and won’t focus on anything but their hunger 2. They probably will fall asleep because of lack of energy

Let me get this straight. Did the man not give his child breakfast at home? No? Why not? Also is the service of any meal contingent on finishing schoolwork? For everybody? Or just this child? This man will not be satisfied with no answers.

Schools have breakfast programs for kids who do not get breakfast to eat (some eat there because of family income and he doesnt need to disclose that). I don't think denying children access to food is acceptable punishment. Take away recess time or something, not food.

Some parents have to go to work early. Not having the time to feed their children breakfast. Because they have to leave home before they are able to do so. Be it both parents are a single parent. This very well could have easily been the case for this father. He may very well be a single parent , nothing was said about that. So we don't know the situation there. It's a fact of life now days of some parents having to leave for work before their able to feed their children breakfast. I know this takes place due to some class mates of my own daughters when she was in school this was taken place then. Nor were their parents poor. They just both had to be at work earlier which prevented them from doing so and wasn't able to do what most parents do , fix breakfast for their children. With some parents this is a fact both parents having to work and having to leave before they could feed their children breakfast. Some have no choice in the matter if they want to support their families. This is a fact of what's taking place and has been for awhile now. I know because my daughter is now 28 years old with children of her own . Were she was in grade school when this took place. I've seen it first hand. So please don't judge this father without having all the information into the situation. This breakfast isn't just for poor children either it's actually a program for all of kids . Due to some parents having to be at work early. It's part of a program put in place because kids were doing without breakfast not just the poor. Yes it was started saying it was for the poor. Because no one wanted it known that even parents who could afford food for their children their children was going to school without breakfast. So it was placed on the poor people to keep it from being know even parents better off , children was dealing with the same thing. If you don think so , will I've to spoken with parents first hand. Who were not poor dealing with this same thing. They were embarrassed about the matter. So once again things like this program was said to be designed for the poor .To protect the better off family's from such embarrassment as not having time to make this own children breakfast in the morning sending their children to school without breakfast due to their work hours. It's a government game that's being played. So again you don't know all the facts please don't judge this father. You don't know his situation.

P.S. My daughter also went to a private school. A private school cost money. Yet they had this same program there as well . Were these parents could afford breakfast for their children same as I could. So no this program isn't just for the poor it's for all the kids . For it was taken place also in private schools as well. .

My child was getting on a bus at 6 am to get to school by 8am. He's Special Needs so he didn't always immediately have an appetite. Stop trying to find fault with the parent. Those breakfasts are paid with TAXPAYER MONEY, and if Dad works, he's paid fir his kid to have breakfast at school if he chooses.

Initially i was assuming that the teacher took away the kid's meal from him but it turned out that the dad is upset that the school didn't feed his kid when in fact it is his responsibility to feed his child. It is not the school's and society's responsibility to do so. It's the dad's primary responsibility to feed his kid at home before coming to school. Second chance breakfast is only there as a privilege. IF the dad took the time to feed his kid and into making sure that the kid completed his work, then it wouldn't have been an issue. Entitlement is such a disease these days.
