In this episode of 10th Scale Garage, we take a look at the brand that everyone loves to hate, Traxxas. We explore the history of firsts, from the bandit and the Nitro Hawk, all the way up to the current controversy of the Sledge and Arrma Kraton. Are they really hobby grade? Are they only meant for beginners? What's with all the upgrade parts? Are they worth your money? We even tale a look at their boats like the Spartan and M41 widebody. Heck, we even touch on their shortly lived Drone, the Aton. Am I wrong about Traxxas? Do they deserve their reputation? Let me know!

No, not so much in my book, trax ass is just a garbage company. They flood the market with crap, (garbage electronics, brittle plastics, gimick over substance) They are as proprietory as they can be, they are sue happy. (They own the word MAXX? I think not.) There cars are good enough to move for a battery, but I've never seen one win anything but drag racing one time. Garbage company selling mediocre junk. That's why I won't even think about a trax ass.

I own several of each brand: Arrma, Traxxas, Redcat, Tamiya, & Kyosho to name a few, and I even own some ZD Racing RCs; ALL of them put miles of smiles on my face for different reasons and I love, break, and repair all my cars. They ALL make great cars, and they ALL make some junk vehicles. Go with whatever YOU can afford and makes YOU happy, but don't listen to the haters. All of that said.... 33 years in the hobby. Wrote for a major publication, hosted multiple events, ran a hobby shop owned nearly every single brand out there. I've seen and watched the evolution of traxxas since the fiero and trx10 bullet. I've raced competitive with the blue Eagle ls2, the trx 1, and srt. I've raced a slash, I've beat the daylights out of nearly every single model. Availability of parts is a huge attraction, as is the 30 model memory with the tqi. There's good and bad in everything, in every hobby. Traxxas outweighs the bad with good by a huge margin. Huge.

It’s not really hard to get parts for anything made today with the internet. I live in Portland Oregon we have Tammie’s hobbies a huge hobby shop. I wouldn’t go there for parts. It’s all on the web with the best prices, free shipping delivered to your doorstep in 4-5 days. “Parts availability” doesn’t go that far when you can get anything on the web. Traxxas is for kids since they left racing in 94-95 when they couldn’t beat associated and losi. Traxxas are plastic hobby grade toys. Nothing bad about that. They’re just not a racing brand so racing guys will speak poorly of them. Traxxas has their place and that’s a great place, rtr easy entry and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Started in my late 40's in the hobby and was directed to a 2wd Slash and never regretted it. Pretty rugged and fairly customizable and upgradable easily. I have a TA RC10B4.2 and have put some Traxxas parts on it because I like them better than the TA parts. IDK I like being able to get parts easily and are available. My problem with Traxxas is the whole thing about the lawsuits against other brands like HPI and Arrma. They were just trying to bankrupt their competitors rather than just making better products and becoming the top brand in a fair way. They are just big bullies in the industry and I won't buy their products for that reason. Having said that I do still have a Slash that I bought before I knew what they were like but it's had so many mods that it's only about 30% Traxxas now anyway!

As far as a product line, I think there are some good models, I have a UDR that I'm pretty happy with. But as a company, it's chock full of the same proprietary, litigious, corporate bullshit as Horizon Hobby (which is killing many legendary brands all on it's own) But honestly, social media has just killed most of the joy right out of this hobby, and I'm a 38 year veteran. Marketing, sales, promotion, is all done on KZbin, Facebook, or Instagram, and it 's all about the clicks, and everybody is a fucking expert. I'd say a big reason people dislike Traxxas is them suing other RC companies like HPI and arrma (particularly when it's over patents that shouldn't have been granted to traxxas in the first place). It became obvious that traxxas didn't want to compete but instead use their size to muscle the competition out of the room. If you've been in the hobby for a while you can see the results of their actions by the lack of brand diversity you see at your local hobby shop, and compare it to how it was around 10 years ago. And in some cases it's directly impacted people who own cars made by the companies who got sued. I mean, I'm not going to say that the reason I can't easily get parts for my HPI car is all traxxas fault (HPI had their own issues before then), but they sure didn't help.

I do agree about the batteries, I haven’t upgraded the battery yet because I know when I go brushless im gonna use a different connector. When I was a kid, I watched traxxas videos and dreamed about an rc car. As soon as I turned 10, my parents bought me an hpi bullet flux. I think I’ve never been so happy, it was beautiful, and fast. Sadly, it was not as durable as what I thought. I think that during the 10 years I’ve owned it, it went through 10 diffs, and the same amount of a arms… As a teen, I barely had no money to fix these things, and parts were so hard to find and expensive. 2 years ago, for my 18th birthday, I bought myself a slash ultimate while visiting Texas with my parents. The difference with the hpi Just shocked me, being able to find cheap parts anywhere, being stronger than the hpi with metal parts and not having disposable diffs… for me traxxas is the perfect balance of performance and durability, and when you compare what you spend in spare parts in other brands, the price is not that high, but that’s just from my point of view.

I think the reason Traxxas has a bad name is because they have a long history. In the past especially with their nitro vehicles they made them to very substandard standards. And then they would nickel and dime you to death to get the parts fixed. Or they were put in junk parts in the vehicle knowing that you have to go out and buy the upgraded parts or go broke buying the same parts over and over and over and over again. And then also they didn’t perform well or anything. They didn’t have the best bashers they didn’t have racers that were worth a darn. That said I think the newest generation of Traxxas are the best They have ever been.

I have had all the main, and obscure Rc’s throughout my years and to be totally honest, Traxxas is my “go to” Rc these days. I know how companies work, and as you said the ecosystem of Traxxas is very similar to Apple, people want a plug and play life, somewhere you can get parts for all their ‘toys’ and I get it, I really do. I am 66 this year and for the past 40 of them I have been in and out of the hobby in some form or another, it gets into your blood, and i keep coming back to it, and the easiest way for me is Traxxas … I have a couple of other brands, but getting parts when they break, is not easy. As an avid electronics worker, the properietarity of it all is frown worthy. Personally, I rewired and re-soldered most of the connections on my decade old stampede so I could run my own custom electronics in it. The Traxxas Titan 12t is the pinnacle of planned obsolescence . It’s just an RS-550S with worse thermal properties (so that it wears out faster) and is extremely inefficient.

Traxxas got big by being the first company to main stream ready to run RC‘s. The problem is they still make the same garbage they did when they originally came out. I bought a Traxxas sledgestill the same garbage quality as the original T-max I had 15 years ago. For the price you think they could’ve at least thrown a decent set of electronics I haven’t used a controller with this much delay since I was running a.m. radios in the 80s. Servo ridiculously slow and underpowered which doesn’t make a difference because it’s bolted into a plastic case so if you change it it just flexes the battery tray it’s bolted to. Bottom line they just make trash and have some of the worst electronics on the market. I really did try to like Traxxas mainly just because they’re one of the only companies that hasn’t sold out to Horizon. But The fit and finish quality of the plastic and metal is just garbage it’s right on the same line with WL toys actually I take that back even some of their shit is built better.

However their electronics are pretty tame and not up to scratch even if they are pretty feature rich. Bought a 2nd hand Traxxas Slash for my son to learn to race. In our second year of racing with myself racing the adult class using the same truck, Its had some mods since I got it and a gradual rebuild front to rear over the time. Best fun we have together and it doesn't matter what brand car you have, they all look the same on their roof.

Great vid, I'm subbed now and I'm a Traxxas fan boy. TBH, the ease of use and customer support/parts availability (if needed) is amazing. I'm also the type that if I had an arrma, I'm buying those batteries and charger. I get people's points, but that's why we have options, nobody is forcing anyone to choose just one. Sadly it remind me of the comic book movie fandom, LOL!

We went to a Traxxas dealer just to see what they had. My dad has a 12 year old RedCat nitro buggy that hasn't been run in like 11 years (sister ran over his radio). They guy who works at Traxxas picked the parts we needed, and told us how to set it up. Boy oh boy, seeing them old servos move was something to see. Can't wait to slap a glow plug in it and get some fuel in that car. I wonder how many more Traxxas parts we can put on that old RedCat. 😅

I own a lot of Arma and one Traxxas. The Traxxas is biult very well and I've hardly had to do anything to it. The Arma's keep me pretty busy but the better I get at driving them the more its about performance upgrades and maintenance than constant repair. I think both brands are very good. These two companies definitely seem to take different approaches to design with makes the hobby more diverse. I personally really enjoy driving both brands.

I had a big gap in my RC days from the early 90’s to around 2001. Saw a guy running a RC monster truck across a parking lot and the damn thing shifted gears! So, I had to go see. Obviously, it was a T-max and I was hooked again. I used to frown upon RTR style RC. If you couldn’t build it, you didn’t deserve to play. However, I think it’s great Traxxas has gotten so many people into the hobby.

I know Traxxas has done the lawsuit stuff and all that, but to me the most onerous thing is their requiring hobbyshops to have "Traxxas-Only" stores if they sell stuff online too. Apparently Traxxas doesn't like it if people compete with their own online sales, so if hobbyshops sell more than a certain amount and don't have a Traxxas-only store, Traxxas will stop giving them stuff with their holdbacks or whatever for better pricing. As a result, the closest hobby shop to my house is Traxxas-only. I went in there to see if I could get a traxxas to EC5 adapter and they said, "well, we're not allowed to sell those here, you'd have to go to our other location. However, you can pay me 5 dollars and I will go solder one together from 'repair parts' in the back."

My bandit vxl runs exclusively on $20 M12 Milwaukee drill batteries. It runs roughly the same speed as when it's on my buddy's lipo, if not faster. Battery gets hot, but it's a $20 battery. I've been using them for less than a year so I cannot speak for longevity, but they give me a decent run time. I just cut the cable from my old battery, crimped some simple connectors on it, and stuck them into the M12. The 12v is a little high for the speed controller, but I have not noticed any issues. I originally tried a 18v ryobi with a voltage step down buck converter, and it worked, but was not getting the speeds I wanted.

So my 1st RC as a kid was a Tyco Rebound. Was indestructible for a 90's RC. So for me I love durability and runtime. Now as a adult I figure there is a plethora of information and just sheer amount of RC's nowadays. Decided to try a $15 walmart RC to dip the toe. Impressed with a cheap 18th scale that I wish was 4WD I started searching and learning hobby grade RC's and just RC stuff in general to get up to speed. Defiantly overwhelming options and I usually come to a conclusion of "this looks nice but I can't find exactly what I want". Feel like I have to build my own from scratch to get my desired looks, durability, and runtime. I hate seeing Traxxas everywhere and I hate how some people go out of way to break RC's like they think it's normal and say "oh yeah, that broke easy"....no shit...you sent it 20 feet in the air and landed on concrete or 20+ mph into a hard object, lol. Thanks for this video. I've noticed It's hard to find metal stuff for RC's, like parts and frames, for different scales and different models, it's usually locked to a brand or model which sucks. All this just makes me wish for my own 3D printer and a metal shop lol.

It's a brand loyalty thing where everybody feels like they need to pick a side and always hate the other guys. It's the same thing we see with full size vehicles, Ford vs GM vs Mopar. The inflated prices, proprietary hardware are pretty bad though. This hobby is new for me, so I do appreciate how easy it is for me to replace parts on my TRX4 and Rustler 4x4 VXL. But I do think I will eventually branch out to Arma and some of the others. Even thinking about Axial for a small crawler. Respect to those that build theirs from scratch, but that's not for me.

I have also recently bought a few cheaper 1/10 scales Like RGT for when company comes over. I just throw a battery in my TRX-4 and run it. Two out of the three Chinese rigs have broken parts that I ether can’t buy or I would have to frig around buying the replacement parts directly from over seas. The broken parts were not because of visitors killing them. It was just inferior materials or design. I should of bought a second Traxxas and kept on smiling!! Traxxas do have their quirks. But on the whole they hold up. And as you said the parts aren’t hard to get. Traxxas is hated because they are envied.

So i have something to say.... I am a grown as 39 year old man with 2 kids (Girl 19, son 16) My daughter and i collect weapons, and i struggled connecting with my son (magic, yugio, etc.) I remembered that my grandfather always bought me RC cars, and trucks when he came back from a trip. Now these are the ones with the controller on a cable... So nothing like now. I bought a super cheap 16th scale basher truck on amazon, and had a good time. Then i saw adds and whatnot for traxxas. After about 3 weeks or so i went and got a 2wd slash. I kept hearing about all the shock caps and other issues.. But im happy to report that i have had no issues, and run it daily. (i dont bash it though) I took my son to my local BMX track and we let it rip.... I can attest that we both fell in love and now we both have 2 traxxas trucks. We are looking into drift cars next, which is how i ended up here, but let me tell you Thank you Traxxas, you saved my relationship with my son. (at least for now) every night we are outside having a great time. We dont use any of the traxxas chargers or batteries, cause, yeah, no, not paying that much. But i do agree, its nice to know that when something does break, i can go to a local store, and get what i need. .... Cool video. Thanks.

Ima add a bit more, I have a 1/16 model that started life as the Kyle Bush Toyota Nascar Truck then got converted to the Mustang Boss 302 and now has been converted to a slash since the mustang body is falling apart due to it being used and abused as well as it being old. Almost all of the parts on the damn thing are the original parts and it's still running strong including the parts I cant replace due to them being retired. So far I've only had to replace a servo, spur gear, and the receiver and transmitter and that's just due to me owning for years. I recently got a TRX-4M and its stupid fun and I'm not really a crawler person. I've got 2 Tamiya's and one of them is about as old as the 1/16 traxxas i have and I've only broken the steering on it and I'm surprised that they still make parts for it.

I just got back into the RC world after being out of it for over 20 yrs. I started in my teens back in the 80s when you had to build them yourself. I had the Super Champ ( had a rear mono shock and would always rollover) , grasshopper, Blackfoot, Clod Buster ( I loved this 4wd & 4ws ). Fast forward to this yr, I bought a 4x4 Rustler VXL in Feb and a Maxx V2 in May. I can not believe the difference and how far they have came. My Rustler is fun and fast as hell but I usually brake something every time I take it out. The Maxx on the other hand, I literally beat the shit out of it, like jump into trees at 55mph, off the roof of the house, head ons with other RC cars and just cosmetic stuff. The only thing I did crack on the Maxx was a front bulk head when the tire bead came off the rim and I slammed into a box filled with concrete. Surprisingly it still ran, it was just making a rubbing grinding noise. I do use other 4s batteries then Traxxas and I do charge them with my Traxxas charger and it still runs great and even longer run time. My RC cars from back in the day would never be able to handle what the RC cars of today can.

ON RTR @7:00 - If you've ever driven your 1/10 scale ANYTHING in anger, or truly bashed it - maybe fully submerged it in the river, whatever - you've got to get in there and disassemble EVERYTHING. It should be part of the process to learn your UBER EXPENSIVE electronics and toys, part of the responsibility for anyone old enough to run a real R/C. I specifically bought higher-end stuff for my family and young nephews to help them learn complex mechanical systems and microelectronic basics.

I gotta agree with you. I've never had a traxxas, or an arrma. They are the most expensive rc's on the market, typically, and I'm not rich enough for that. But I do love my rc's. Simply because I use and test them, they break, I figure out why, I upgrade or optimize that fault in some way, and then I test again. Eventually, you end up with an rc rig that is dialed in for what you do with it. I wanted a 4s beast. I looked at my options. I saw the price tags. I cringed a bit. But then I found a smaller company, still US based (not for any reason other than I am in the US, so I want parts that will be here sooner rather than later), and bought their 4s rig. Now I paid about 60% of the cost of the traxxas and arrma alternatives. I then spent the other 40% of that cost on hop-ups and upgrades, spares, batteries, and other doodads. I'm grateful I did that, because I'm getting a head start on the experience of doing all this work to my rig. I've dialed it in so much better than it was when I got it, and still have a few parts left to install and upgrade. That is why I chose the brand I went with for my 4s beast, and, for the record, my price comparisons were for 3s traxxas and 3s arrma options. I do not regret it. So dont insult blindly, dont make blanket statements about who is superior and who just sucks, because at the end of the day, if you work on your own rigs, it doesn't actually matter what brands you are using. It matters that you did the work to optimize your own machine, and it will perform better than the RTR thing you bought in the beginning. Thanks for this video. I know I'm late to this video party, but because of this video, I subscribed. Keep up the objective work!!

But that marketing budget isn't going to pay for itself. But they do have a lot of 1st and they do make good product so at leas there's that. The "new Sport" had already been discontinued, but I could still get factory replacement parts for it because Traxxas has great parts availability. Dude, Traxxas has earned their reputation as one of the best companies in RC! Let's be honest there are plenty of things to be critical about but nice to see you present "the other side of the coin". I think the biggest criticism of Traxxas though is their Corporate policies, especially their 'litigious tendencies' (they like to sue people 🙄). Protecting your intellectual property is one thing but these guys are ridiculous. I have to say though, this criticism that the Sledge is a clone of the Kraton is total bullshit! The Truggy design has been around for years so, if the Sledge is guilty of copyright infringements, then so is just about every 1/8 scale truggy. I mean, there is only so much you can do with this design. And the differences between the two is enough that saying the Traxxas is a clone is just not true (trying to be nice here, lol). It's more of a love/hate thing for me. Traxxas makes awesome looking, innovative models that do cost alot, but the real money for traxxas is in upgrades, they put out must have models, and after you pay for that they come out with must have upgrades to make it better. Why not just have that shit from the start and charge accordingly? That's what I hate. Traxxas batteries are so bad they should be illegal, but again, they come out with an exclusive easy to use system that makes it worth it for some people, definitely not me. At some point, I'll probably join the "Basher's Paradox" club with one RC and see what I think about that kind of play, but for now, I'm sticking with a more financially sound approach! :) I haven't been in the hobby long enough to know which aspects of it that I prefer yet!

I have a Redcat shredder and the back left driveshaft pops out all the time. Do you know of a fix for this?

Hating on stuff is what i did when I was a 10 - 12 year kid. Some people grow out of it early, some people just never grow out of it. I tend to stay away from those who are so loyal to a brand and hate on another for no reason other than they got on that same sinking ship. They tend to be a bunch of narcissists too. From my experience, they don't just act this way with RC cars. It's everything in life. Heaven forbid you to bring up politics with those people you won't make back home alive, lol. Subscribed. Great video. O'doyle rules!

I got a free 2wd slash and so far I got like 200 bucks in parts in it lol. I'm an arrma guy, so i think arrma is definitely easier to work on. Its not a bad vehicle, it's just a different learning curve. Defintely more frustrating so far haha. Currently trying to get the brushless motor I stuck in it to run cooler.

I own a Traxxas Slash 4x4, it's had a few parts broken, but I love it, love the experience, and love how easy it is to use. Good talk, yep, pretty much Apple in an rc car.

Great video! I am a Traxxas fan. My XMAXX is my number 1 favorite RC and I have put that truck through hell and back! I have no complaints with Traxxas. Parts for my E-Maxx are still available.

First time watching this channel and l felt the need to comment. I have many different makes of RC cars in my collection…..Arrma, Axial, HPI, HSP and Traxxas to name a few. All of them are fun to drive and all put a smile on my dial in different ways. I have an Arrma Talion that’s powered by a Traxxas XO-1 1650kv motor and it absolutely kicks ass. I’ve got both an Arrma Kraton and Talion with dual motors that l built myself that scare the crap out of me. I have a Traxxas Revo 3.3 and a Slayer Pro 3.3 that l purchased back in 2015 that to this day have never been started or even had nitro in the tank. My first electric car was HSP Planet that l bought l think in 2014 and it’s been an absolute tank, and still runs perfect to this day. I’ve had cars cartwheel into next week and broke nothing but another car roll a few times and I’d have a snapped wing or a broken shock. It’s just the nature of the hobby. Drive, break, repair, repeat.

As someone who's just getting into the hobby, ARRMA and Traxxas are 2 most popular, Losi and TA seem to be the underrated brands. I don't own any big brand RCs yet, but from what I'm seeing, ARRMA is the way to go for the most part. Most of what ARRMA makes as of right now seem like 5 star products overall, however, I don't see a lot of great Traxxas cars (electric) other than the Slash Ultimate, E-REVO 2.0, Maxx 2.0, XMAXX, XRT, and MAYBE the Sledge (Sledge has horrible motor mounting system and gearbox design). But other than those, most of their electric stuff seems like garbage. But I can't say the same about what I see from ARRMA and Losi. Am I wrong? I'm new, but I've done tons and tons of research on most electric RCs as of 2023. And these were my findings, and my unbiased observation. Don't get me wrong, Horizon Hobby stuff with Spektrum servos being shotty, ARRMA/Losi definitely isn't perfect, but seem much superior with most of their cars. (Electric stuff, I'm not interested in gas/nitro, so I haven't done that research) Edit: I don't plan on being brand religious. I believe if it's a good car, it's a good car. And even if it's not great, if it's the one that suits what you want it for and you love it, it's the best. For me, I'm looking into the ARRMA 3S Senton because it suits my location/terrain, looks awesome, and from what I've heard in my research, is one of the easiest to work on, most durable, and reliable cars on the market. But hey, maybe you'd prefer the Big Rock, Vorteks, maybe a Kraton, or hell, Traxxas Slash or something. It depends completely on your driving style, driving terrain, and environment. All I know, is that the ARRMA Senton seems to be the best for my wants and needs, so that's what I'm going to get over a Traxxas Slash or TA SC10, or Losi Tenacity. (And yeah, I like short course trucks lol. They are just so cool to watch in the dirt!)

Bought my first rc car 4 years ago. I specifically bought the slash 4x4. After researching, I realized I could find parts around every corner and an entire inventory of aftermarket parts. Couldn't be happier. Also I have never and don't own a traxxas charger or batteries.
