I built 2 of these joined together, long wall facing due south., also on a deck base, with crushed stone heat store below. However, in an open area with no windbreaks. In 2 weeks, a wind storm took the walls and roof off of the steel base. The steel components failed, unfolded or bent, releasing the walls. The aluminum was fine. No extra panel clips, but did add 2 or 4 screws per panel into the cross supports. Not even a shingle out of place on any other building on the property. The wall column to base support is a weak point, and not easy to beef up. Must have a windbreak. Very few salvageable pieces. I did reinforce the end walls over the doors, very weak spot there. I was able to splice the two units together with some strip flashing, and put collar ties in where the back walls would be, left all open inside for 24 feet.
@southernhomesteadtransformatio Жыл бұрын
It definitely will not hold up without reinforcements....a d I knew the metal base was a very bad design 🤔
@ronaldwilliams162 Жыл бұрын
@@southernhomesteadtransformatio I had looked at several videos, and took some of those modifications as good ideas, some added little to no value, but no one ever mentioned the base. I thought it looked a little flimsy, the point load of the clips, but assumed that since everything else was highly engineered, this too was OK. It was highly engineered, both the clips and the channel base hit their elastic yield point simultaneously, that was no coincidence, just not strong enough. Once the windward door corner yielded, the rest of them followed, same failure, clip opening and channel edge bending up.

This greenhouse was bought 2.5 years ago. I am a construction guy and put it up reinforced with 2x4 on the inside and extra screws in every panel. I did that because everyone was having a problem keeping them up. Well the wind never blew the building down but the doors came off the hinges with every storm...even after trying to secure it closed. The big problem was that after 2.5 years, all of the roof panels begin to crumble...and with a little wind they would crack and bust, then fly off. I called harbor freight and they said they could sale me panels for 41 dollars a piece. That times 12 is almost 500 dollars....I bought the green house on sale for 600. The panels will only last another couple of years and then it will be the same thing all over again. Please, please, don't waste your time with this. If I knew this about the roof I would have never bought it.

I saw on another video someone left a comment that you can get breathable polycarbonate tape, that would work best for the bottoms as it still allows for pressure fluctuations when the temperature changes and it allows for any condensate to drain out effectively. I mean unless you fill it with an inert gas or something you're still going to have condensation if you seal both ends so you want it to be able to breathe on the bottom but you don't want spiders and bugs and stuff to get in, so the breathable polycarbonate tape seems like a good option for the bottoms.

Silicone everybody loves it, if you put the silicone in one end and let it cure go to Wally world and get you a couple of hypodermic needles from the pharmacy are about 50 cents a piece, or they might give them to you and give you a strange look. Anyway after the one end is cured put the hypodermic needle punch through the cured end, and you can pull a vacuum on it as you're putting the silicone in the other end.or at least it will vent the pressure as you put in the silicone in. remove the needle after you're finished installing the uncared silicone.

I’m a single woman. How much do you think it would cost me to hire someone to build mine like this? I want to be fair but not get ripped off either.
@southernhomesteadtransformatio3 жыл бұрын
Lorri, it is not a quick process to assemble it properly....I joked that I wouldn't build this for a customer for 10k......a fair rate would be 2k for the time it takes. I would try to find someone who is familiar with it and definitely have them watch this video first and maybe a few others....best of luck!....if you have other questions let me know.

what a horrible waste of water! why didn't you plan to use it to water plants with or backup storage for rain water collection??? you're going to need to water inside your greenhouse . water is also a good heat sink.

I have more than enough water...we don't live in the desert 🤣

all those trees around the greenhouse thank him.

looks like you could have done a better job building your own from scratch rather than going with the china junk, might have been even cheaper

An idea for your roof top vents, go to homepower.com in the home power magazine you can buy from manufacturers automatic gas charged mechanical apparatuses that will automatically open and close your vents according to the heat ambient temperature during the hot day they will open up, At night they will pull down shut and they are strong do not force them or you will break them 'their gas charged'. They are one of many many renewable energy products made for the R.E. industry and my greenhouse.☀️ Also have a small P.V. system and a inverter and backup system to run my drip irrigation. But most things run on pure regulated D.C. Aquarium pumps run on A.C./D.C. transformers but I can toss them and go straight D.C. don't forget the LED lights can't go anywhere without finding some of them and they are some great ones out there a great addition to a small P.V. system. Bring on the ☀️
