This video recaps how to construct a shear force diagram (SFD) and bending moment diagram (BMD) using the graphical method. This is done for a shaft which is loaded with point forces only.

Do you use scale when drawing the shear force diagram? eg. how to draw 371N up?

I don't think so. But for horizontal forces it would be axial loads so you should search for axial load diagrams. It's pretty much the same thing. :)

Where is the maximum bending moment point will be based on the bending moment diagram?

I believe in the BMD the solution to (129.85+11)*0.5 should equal 70.425 Nm instead. The error then carries to the last solution not ending back at 0.

I now realise it's calculated 129.85+(11*0.5), so please forget my above comment.

I think my solution is good - it's just that you have got the brackets incorrect in yours. Should be 129.85+(11*0.5) rather than (129.85+11)*0.5).

what if the force goes up but it negative sign? From where do we start left or right?

Hi Sarah, in your previous video you mentioned that moments need to be considered differently i.e. clockwise = positive moment, anti-clockwise = negative moment. How come the moments for the fixed joints on A and D have not been considered?

It's because they aren't fixed joints - they're treated as roller joints. The question also states that A and D only exert vertical forces.

I need help regarding a question. I want design shaft for shredding / metal crushing machine. can you tell me how to make free body diagram for that. because you know the shaft is hexagon shape and loaded with many cutting blades in shaft.

The principles are exactly the same - it doesn't matter whether it is gears and bearings or anything else. You just need to quantify the forces and moments, then follow the process in the videos.
