ITS ETCHED IN MY BONES I sat for hours as kid as this went on the TV had nothing else, the radio had nothing else...we used to ha e respect for our government and the POTUS was number 1...the truth is quite horrible but best we learn.

I may catch flack for this.. but I absolutely love the speed and tempo that the US Military band is playing this piece to. It’s perfect for marching, and really makes it an “American Version” that stands out from the slow style tempo the British Military play to.

I had the exact same thoughts. I don't really know which one I prefer. They both have their "place" I guess.

I love both versions; both portray unimaginable grief, but focus differently on the impact of the deceased. When I hear this, I think of the power that was stripped from the incumbent President, and how much of a shame it was, though when I hear the British version I feel it more reflects on HM's life.

I don’t think it’s a musical choice. I believe in American state funeral processions they march at the normal quick time (100 beats per minute) whereas if you listened to what the officers were calling on the day of Her late Majesty’s funeral procession, they were at slow march which by my count is 75 bpm.

maybe thats why its actually called the funeral "march"

Completely agree! I adored the marches for the late great HM QEII funeral, but can't help but think of what perfection it would have been if they played this version of Chopin. For me, the two versions simply don't compare.

Until 1959, the official manual for US Army executions (DA PAM 27-4) included a requirement for a live band to play this march as part of the proceedings.

This happened eight days before my tenth birthday - a vividly horrifying recollection. This brings it all back. What a waste! One thing I have always been amazed at is the one sailor trailing the coffin, carrying the flag the entire way. That must have taken spectacular will power and strength.

Although I did not then know it was composed by Chopin, I was familiar with the tune of the "Funeral March" from cartoons where it was used to mock the imminent demise of some cartoon character. The first time I heard it used in an actual funeral was on November 25, 1963 (I was 15 years old) when it was a prominent feature of JFK's televised funeral procession. I would never again regard it with comic overtones.

This is the biggest deference between US and British marching bands. British marching tempo is traditionally slower; US field band tempo sounds odd to those more accustomed to an old world March tempo.
