You don't have to arm the track to record the automation! not arming the track has the advantage that you don't mess with the midi that ist already recorded.

Automating the frequency knob to do high or low cuts to accent important parts. The hardest part I'm dealing with is ALL the channels are important, but I'm finding the ability to minimize the audio traffic jam by automating vol, freqs, etc as the song moves along so it has discoverable sprinkles of sound as the beat carries us to the lasers. I sent my first GOOD song to a friend who played it in his trailer park, they all got out and bounced w it. Love hearing YOUR tips helping my sound get better.

Hi Will, great video! I'm on Bitwig Studio... with - of course - different automation capabilites, but... you make your videos almost always "generic" enough to be applied in other DAW's with ease - which is great. The interesting part is in powerful automation capable DAW's the really almost endless possibilites of automation (even in combination with modulation). And when almost any modulated parameter also can be modulated, things become quickly "overwhelming", making it sometimes useful to begin on a "minimalistic" basis and make as little (but effective) as possible automation (and modulation, too). Anyway it makes sense to find out "manually" the influence of changing parameters inside instruments and effects (especially when one use a new device, or after a device had a major update)... and then imagine the automation effect inside the track... And you're right, because often "less is more" regarding elements inside a track. If one uses automation effectively, this makes a lot of movement, acoustic variety... all in all it makes a track keep the interest of the listener alive (and is always fun to listen to).

@@EDMTips first of all thanks for getting back to me! im actually in the music industry for many years already and have released some tracks and an album here and there from time to time, i had some long time off afterwards while i had to move to another country, priorities, technical issues and impossible to move and setup studio again. so now im coming back and i feel more educated more experianced and focused on what i want to achieve. im a huge fan of reading and watching new stuff and informations, i also love watching other people's approach and way of working. there is always new things to learn. what i think would be great topic to cover is compare and explain the sound quality using Ableton's instruments or Vsts. of course ableton's instruments are a much CPU saver compare to Vst but what about the end product and sound quality ( before mastering). Also would be nice to see creating some of the future leading sound these days (Afterlife) and more of melodic techno ( 124/126bpm). :)
