It's absolutely about when stores become profitable. Most stores are "in the red" until the day after Thanksgiving brings a lot of buyers looking for a good deal. Stores are incentivized to make a good chunk of their sales in the days after the holiday because shoppers/buyers expect it. "Black Friday" is all about profitability.

Just to clarify an important point: free drink refills in the United States generally refers to SOFT drinks in either a fast food or fine dining restaurant. Please do not go crazy ordering refills on alcohol in any bar, pub, or restaurant, because you may get a shock when you receive your bill.

I had typed up pretty much the same thing (including 'just to clarify' part, then I saw your post) only thing to add is it started with coffee (not Starbucks coffee, but real coffee) and added soda/tea later. Even things like Lemonade / orange juice don't usually qualify for the refill policy.

About the Garbage Disposal: The waste material goes into the sewage system, not just the waste water system. So there isn't anything that wouldn't already be going into the water table. Plus sewage is extremely processed to be as clean as possible. Our biggest problem in the states is really industrial and agricultural usage. Those two cause a butt ton of issues with toxins or increased ph levels in the water.

Yes; I live on the Great Miami (which is in Ohio, thanks) aquifer. We are quite familiar with the issue. One of the biggest challenges is when someone changes the oil in their car, then dumps the old oil in the sewer.

The red solo cup makes me laugh. That really is not a staple in our culture. Although you may see them in many movies, the only time we would use them is if we are hosting a very large party or if we are having a cookout with a keg of beer or if non-alcoholic beverages are being served out of 2 litre bottles. Personally, I may go to one event a year where I might find red solo cups.

In Germany, we have an extra bio-waste garbage can for food waste, plant material, etc.: Organic waste is usually recycled in two different ways: either in a composting plant, where it decomposes into humus, or in a biogas plant, where the waste first ferments and biogas is produced. The rest, which has not turned into gas, is composted into humus. Many have their own compost pile in the garden. All these food scraps they do not increase the rat problem, just a question?

@@arnodobler1096 When food waste is buried under a few inches/cm of finished compost, the smells which attract vermin are absorbed by the cover material and do not escape. So rat problems should be minimal. I've had a compost pile for 30 years in a known rat infested area and have never seen rats in the compost.

Correction on meaning of Black Friday. So many things are purchased on this one day, businesses who's books may be in the negative (Red ink), switch to a positive balance (Black ink). This is often misunderstood in the US as well.

The "black" in Black Friday does not come from death/violence. It is an economic term meaning the company's balance book starts showing a profit, going from "in the red" or negative to "in the black" or positive balance.

The misunderstanding of the name Black Friday is one of my pet peeves! It has nothing to do with accidents! It refers to the fact that most stores don't make a profit until that day in the year, meaning they are now "in the black" as far as their books, as opposed to being "in the red" or in a deficit.

Solo brand cups took over so much of the market because of their high quality. Compared to other plastic cups they almost never break unintentionally. I went to college with a member of the family that created the product and owned the company for many years and learned a lot about them from him. I believe I recall hearing that the reason they are not commonly sold in other countries is because they are not made from a plastic that is easily recycled. I think they are all #6s, and in most places only plastic types 1-5 are recycled.

​@@bigscarysteve At one time there was some truth to this but over last 5 to 6 decades as Norway has expanded it global identity beyond being known primarily as a fishing and maritime culture. For centuries prior the end of WW-2 that was their major income source along with timber but that's changed greatly since the end of WW2 where they become major oil and other business providers so the Norwegians economy has become a really world powerhouse along with their global reach. Flags are a sign of pride but not to showoff but to show their happiness.

Those reasons are why we tolerate the horrid winter weather. This Canadian lived in California for 10 years and was approved for permanent residence . But I returned to Canada for family matters. Though I only live here in Vancouver. Where the climate is less extreme. If we did not have Vancouver I would have stayed in California. My point is that you cannot judge a book by its cover. A closer look at the USA and Canada you would find a lot of differences.

Black Friday has definitely changed over the last 20 years. It used to be only day after Thanksgiving now it seems there are sales all the time. It's much tamer in person now, it used to be a madhouse and potentially dangerous. It was fun when I was younger, but no way now.

@@CaptainFrost32 I can remember in the late 1970's that the TV news started repeating the anecdote that the day after Thanksgiving was the biggest shopping day of the year. I remember being surprised by that, as everyone I knew just spent the day at home, recovering from all the overeating on Thanksgiving. Turns out, that claim was a complete fabrication at the time. I also remember in 1989, I went with a buddy of mine to see the insane shopping on Black Friday at the local mall. We were disappointed, as the place was completely dead. The anecdote still hadn't come true. Then 20 or 30 years ago, some businesses started offering insane deals on Black Friday, and the anecdote started becoming a reality. That isn't to say that the Christmas shopping season in general wasn't the busiest time of the year for retail--it was, at least as far back as the 1930's. That's what prompted Franklin Roosevelt to change the date of Thanksgiving in 1939. But Black Friday? Nah, that wasn't a thing until the 1990's, at least.

As in most of the year, a business could be working at a loss, or "in the red". Black Friday sales are typically their best sales of the year, putting them back in the black (profits).

Somebody already explained the true source of the term "Black Friday". Solo cups now come in various colors. I am partial to blue. I don't put large chunks of food down the garbage like they often show. Usually, it's just a few little bits of meat, crumbs, and vegetables that are too much of a pain to scrape off.

A garbage disposer might be great, if one has city sewers. IMO, it's stupid if one has a septic system, which costs $350-$500 to get pumped, so why fill it up with food scraps?

Most food waste in Europe now goes in the compostables bin, if one doesn't have a compost heap at home, it is turned into a slurry to produce Biogas, the residue is used and sold to farmers as fertiliser.

Garbage Disposals grind the food up and it goes out with other waste water. Either it will go out to the sewer where a waste treatment plant will process the waste or it will go to a septic tank where bacteria will breakdown the waste. They actually say you should limit what you put down your sink when you have a septic tank to keep it in good working order.

Hey Diane, not every home in the US has a garbage disposal. If you have an electric dish washer, it drains out into a garbage disposal so any extra food that may have been on your dishes pass through the garbage disposal. Large pieces of food don’t pass through and you can turn on the disposal to grind it up and let it pass through into the sewer along with the rest of the waste water. This is why the garbage disposal is always on the side of the sink near the dishwasher. Have a great week! :-)

It was called that because, historically, it wasn't until the revenue from sales on that day that most companies started to turn a profit, going from their accounts owing debts (being "in the red"), to having positive revenue (being "in the black").

A couple of things. First, Black Friday became a big shopping event which occurred the day after Thanksgiving in the USA to kick off the Christmas holiday shopping season. It was rather convenient because Thanksgiving happens on the fourth Thursday in November and is a huge holiday on par with Christmas and Easter. Most other countries don't celebrate any version of Thanksgiving though some do and others have an equivalent harvest holiday but not on par with the American Thanksgiving holiday. For instance, Canada celebrates Thanksgiving but it occurs in the second week of October and is celebrated on a Monday, and they treat it like Decoration Day in Europe, Memorial Day in the USA, or Labor Day in the USA. An important holiday, but not nearly as big as we make it here in America. Second, college sports, particularly American style football and basketball, are hugely popular in America, and among the larger universities they function as a quasi semi-pro sports league. Also, many of our public universities have upwards of 20,000 students or more enrolled each year, with the largest university (The Ohio State University) having 65,000 students. Most colleges and universities in Europe have a fraction of the students that American universities have. Also, with traditional football being the most popular sport in Europe, and with the collection of football leagues that also include relegation, anyone pursuing a football career would likely go to their local club and not need to play any sport in college. The same happens on a lesser scale with basketball. In fact, the NBA recruits most of its players from colleges in America, but in recent years they have created a minor league called the G League for kids who couldn't or didn't want to go to college, and they are recruiting heavily from overseas. In fact, some of the best players currently in the NBA came from outside the USA (Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic).

I think something else that *could* contribute to the College Sports fandom in the US v. many (but obviously not all) other countries is the size of the US. While there are around 30 or so major league professional teams in the various leagues such as the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA, mostly concentrated in the biggest cities, there are about 130 college football teams in the FBS (what used to be known as Division 1-A, the top division of college football). And last I heard, over 300 college basketball teams in Division 1. So cities such as Austin, Texas, or states like Nebraska and Alabama, can have a "major" team or two to support, whereas they may be hundreds of miles away from the nearest professional team.

Stuff going down the garbage disposal does not go straight to the ocean or lake, it goes into septic tanks or sewer systems along with everything else that does into septic systems or sewer systems ( like poo ), it all gets treated before it heads to the ocean or lakes !

"Red Solo Cup" is just a plastic party cup to us. Solo is a company like Kleenex or Band-Aid. They aren't just red, they are almost always available in red, white, blue and often in green. The only time we'd use them is the same time we'd use paper plates.

I've heard that New Zealand has garbage disposals too. And the outflow from them doesn't go straight out to the watershed; it goes to the sewage treatment facility along with the, um, other waste.

I don't know whether New Zealand has garbage disposals or not, but I do know that it is the only other country besides America that allows doctors and lawyers to advertise. Such advertising has only been legal in America since the 1980's, and I think it started in New Zealand around the same time--but in America, it's a provision of state law, so there are 50 different dates when it became legal here. I imagine it was just one single date in New Zealand.

Garbage disposals don't go straight out to sea. They go into the sewer along with the waste water or "grey water" which is also where the water from your shower goes. It gets filtered out through several processes, but it's essentially going the same place your toilet is, not the same place your drinking water comes from.

Instead, the drink fountains are kept behind the counter so that only employees have access to them. If you want a refill, then you must purchase a new drink.

It wasn’t that long ago that attorney ads were banned on American TV. Garbage disposals will send the ground up food into the sewer system, or septic system (if you have a well), but they don’t flush straight out to the sea. It goes to a local/regional sewage treatment plant, where it is filtered out. Our Environmental Protection Agency would have a field day writing citations and fining companies and homeowners if that did happen.

US college athletes previously were allowed to receive scholarships, but not much more. Just this year, the US Supreme Court ruled that the athletes did have rights to license (or withhold) usage of their names, images, and likenesses for commercial purposes. Free refills: It depends upon the type of drink (and restaurant policy). Refills of coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks are generally available; not so for alcoholic drinks or specialty drinks. Black Friday is named that because it was traditionally a day that retailers would see their summer deficits (red ink) turn into profits (black ink) as all the Christmas sales (yay consumerism!) kicked off the day after Thanksgiving. It's become less of a big deal since the early-00s after arseholes made it such a dangerous and disgusting display of greed and gluttony, at the expense of the very retailers the day was supposed to help. Now the deals start earlier and earlier every year.

I'm glad someone here can remember when Black Friday wasn't a thing. I can remember it being asserted as being a thing as far back as the late 1970's on the TV news--but it wasn't in reality. They could've used some fact-checkers back then. I ventured out on Black Friday in 1989 to see this phenomenon--which didn't exist yet. I went to my local mall, and it was deader than a doornail. It only became a reality about 20 years ago--around the same time that internet shopping was also becoming a thing.

Garbage disposal waste goes into the sewer and is processed along with the poo and other things that are flushed down the toilet or go down a sink drain it definitely does not go straight out to the ocean (River, lake, etc).

It's called Black Friday because it is the one day when businesses are expected to make a profit. If a company is "in the black," it means it is making a profit. If a company is "in the red," it is losing money. This goes back to when paper ledger sheets were used. Assets were written in black ink. Liabilities were written in red ink.

In other words, 11 months of revenue are needed to pay all operating expenses and the final month of revenue is all profits. (Many Americans think this explanation is a load of crap.)

40 years ago, they didn't have prescription drug or lawyer ads in the USA. Rules changed to allow them sometime in the 1980's. Most people don't think, that it's a good thing, and if we had to do it over, we wouldn't allow it. There's likely a myriad of reasons, but I'd need to sit down & think about it to come up with a list.

The ads for medicines came about from legal rulings about informed consent, as blind trust in the pharmaceuticals and doctors has had consequences. The ads for lawyers often are specific in trying to get a large enough client list for class action lawsuits before cutoff dates. Also, a lot of personal injury lawyers want visibility to potential clients instead of being a line on a index (whether the traditional Yellow Pages, yelp website, or other databases).

Actually, I have seen numerous people on KZbin in other countries such as England that are starting to use garbage disposals. Also, Black Friday derives from the concept that businesses operate at a financial loss, or are “in the red,” until the day after Thanksgiving when massive sales finally allow them to turn a profit, or put them “in the black."

My dad was an attorney, and he was really angry when the law changed to allow lawyers to advertise, because he thought it was unethical and tacky. Most people feel the same way regarding the advertising of prescription drugs. But unfortunately, our representatives in our capital have sold their souls to the pharmaceutical companies, and consequently, royally damaged our economy. IF you want to know how someone ended up homeless or on food stamps, or living out of their car, or mentally ill or addicted to drugs due to living on the street, much of the time it's because of medical expenses. Spray Cheese is very uncommon here in New York -- you can occasionally find it in cheap convenience stores. But it really isn't that popular (here). So I was absolutely shocked when I moved to Ohio, and when I asked for a tuna melt with any cheese other than Swiss (cuz I don't care for it), I was handed a can of spray cheese to go with my tuna on slice of toast. It's very rare to see anyone flying a flag here. Sometimes someone might bring out their flag for veterans day or something like that. And government buildings, of course, will usually have flags. To have one on your home is more of a Republican/conservative thing, in which case it's kind of bragging or used to shame others. I think most liberals would do away with a lot of the ceremonial/symbolic crap, because it's too often used in an antagonistic way.

"General water waste" - i.e. sewage as opposed to runoff/storm water. This is the same system as handles the water from your toilet and, in a way, the ground up food is simply a less processed version of what you're flushing normally.

What's funny is that American cheese in a can is allowed to be called cheese, but the actual slice of "cheese" for which it is named cannot be called cheese because it doesn't contain enough cheese, meaning the slices contain less cheese than the canned cheese. I'll add to the garbage disposal that most people don't use them. When they get clogged it can be a headache that turns into an expensive nightmare if you can't fix it yourself. Most people (that I know) just throw the food scraps in the trash, we don't use the garbage disposal even though it's in (almost) every home.

@@m.r.6264 Another aspect of it is that the use of garbage disposals came before most city trash collection districts had recycling/composting programs. You put food scraps in the disposal and ground them to a sludge that would go down the drain, because the only other option was to put them in the trash where they'd rot and stink up the place quickly, if you didn't take them outside to the main trashcan. Nowadays, composting food waste is common/widespread enough that a lot of city trash departments have regular pickups of organic materials. The city then composts them, which saves on landfill disposal fees; the compost is used for parks and city plantings, and is often available free/cheap to households for gardening. My city supplies three different plastic trash bins: A recycling bin with separate compartments for glass/plastic on one side and paper/cardboard on the other, a landfill bin for non-recyclable trash, and a much larger bin for compostable organic waste (lawn cuttings, leaves, small-diameter twigs/branches/vines, biodegradable food waste). on collection day, three different trucks come by, one to empty each type of bin. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a sharp downturn in garbage disposal sales in communities that have instituted collection of organic waste for composting. Why buy a garbage-eating gadget that you have to maintain, if the city will just haul the garbage away and say they're doing something useful with it?

Actually, Solo cups actually come in a variety of colors. Red is by FAR the most common and popular, but blue is probably second place, followed by yellow. Other colors, including green, clear, and even black exist as well. But red is king.

Black Friday isn't a big deal in the U.S. anymore. Craziness is much rarer anymore because of larger stock availability and longer holiday sale periods. Spray cheese may be found at most grocery stores, but I've only had it a couple times in my whole life. Garbage disposals are more common globally now.

Before retirement I worked Maintenance for an Apartment complex. You do not want a Disposal. It is the number one cause for stopped up sinks. Also based on the models he was showing the first on was discontinued about 15 years ago. It was easy to install. We were authorized to remove a disposal completely if it went out because of the sink stoppage problem.

for college sports - the players receive scholarships and recently they have been allowed to receive NIL money (name, image, likeness) meaning that the player can make endorsement money from companies to promote their products. players don't make salaries off their sport, however, some players' NIL deals can be six or seven figures depending on how popular they are.

BLACK Friday is actually the day when stores that are unprofitable for the year (in the red) become profitable (in the black), because in accounting terms red denotes a loss while black denotes a profit. I grew up in the country. No sewage system, no garbage pick-up. It either was used for compost, feeding pigs, or burnt up in the burn barrel. Pigs are better than disposals, they will eat anything, and later you have ham, pork, and bacon.

Disposals reduce the dependence on landfills and the slurry joins the sewage for treatment. Not sure what he was on about "filtering it out." The largest cost is really water, not energy; they are environmentally friendly and more sanitary than food refuse.

Two comments: 1) College sports. Not a fan of the whole college sports system. They are basically a way to exploit young people (who by the rules) do not make any money out of it other than tuition, housing and a small stipend. The colleges themselves make millions of dollars, while a good fraction of the players are used for four years and discarded, often without a useful degree or perhaps no degree at all. The colleges offer "secret" classes that satisfy the academic rules for the players but are usually kindergarten easy. A few students do make it to professional teams, a few do manage to get proper degrees, but these are very much the exceptions. 2) Free refills. The restaurants are giving away something that costs then practically nothing. They charge you, oh, $2 for a large soda that consists of maybe 4 cents of the syrup and a penny for the fizzy water. They can give this to you for free all day because they've already made a big profit no matter how much you drink.
