11 days building a dugout shelter, bush cabin, solo overnight, Autumn - Winter

Many times I have been asked how long it takes to build these dugouts. This was my first shelter in the woods and it took me 11 days to build. If you count the breaks between visits, too, it must have been two months. You have to take into account the speed of the work and the distance of the location. I never rush and enjoy the moment.
I never finished the dugout because of the difficult situation in the country. I hope you will be able to relax and rest. Enjoy watching it all.

Why did you decide to not use thick mud on the roof? Was there no moss near by? Those are what l see most witha layer of dirt between. Good to see other's ideas tho.

The thick mud that could be used on the roof is clay. I don't have any, just sand.

Good question! From other "bushcrafters" I have heard that it is to conserve the tree and make it more resistant against humidity and rotting. So they remain more solid for a much longer time. When in the ground, they can never fully dry - other than when above ground so rotting is a much higher risk when buried.

Well I enjoyed the show but I never did see The Dugout. I saw a nice-looking cabin.. but just because you made it yourself does not make it a dugout. A dugout is where you digging a hole 8 to 10 ft deep how you build a house in that hole and then you cover it up with dirt. Leaving only a door and a smoke stack and maybe a window or 2 sticking out and visible. I really wish some of you people could learn the proper definition of words before you go using them.!
