The EVM12L, G12-65, and ‘88 Vintage 30 are all standouts to my ear. With my surprise favorite being the G12-65. Some that I didn’t like at all with just the close mic sounded much better to me when mixed with the room mic, something I would not have expected. (The G12H100 was one of those to the maximum.) Fantastic playing! Great riff (I mean since you’re playing it like 10,000 times you might as well have fun!) 😁 Thanks for this!

That 1989 G12-75 had such a great balance of tone. Nice chunky bottom with no flab, strongest mids for my ears. Great video. The only thing missing from videos like these is adjustment for each speaker to compensate for the changing EQ. I get that the idea is to show the differences between the speakers, but the G12T-75 for example is very scooped in this video but it allows you to crank your mids more which really suits some amps.

Hi Johan! I am a proud owner of an old Park cabinet, probably from the late 70's. It has those G12-65 Celestions inside and with my 2204 JMP head they sound Killer. Just as in your demo they have a very pronounced, broad mid and not too sharp highs. It's very good combo for the Marshall amp which can be bright in highgain territory. I found actually the G1280 to be very pleasant also! It is a bit on the sharp side but in a good way and probably could do thrash and other heavier styles as well :) Keep on rocking! Cheers from Poland!

I liked the tone but I'm not sure if it would get lost in a mix. In forums, you can't tell much about the players that are posting.
@TheProgGuy
@TheProgGuy Жыл бұрын
@@qua7771 it absolutely gets lost in the mix, you're right. On it's own, it's great, but once you start adding other instruments into the mix, the fullness is too much. It's got a nice low and low mid response, but that is primarily where the bass occupies it's frequency spectrum. from 100-1.5khz is where a bass will usually sit, and a guitar will usually sit between 250-4khz. The T75 does not have that upper mids (above 1.5khz) like a good majority of the other speakers do. It's mid focus battles with the bass and vocals (in a metal/modern hard rock situation). Since in the comparison it follows the V30, it's clear why that has been the go to speaker for years.
@qua7771
@qua7771 Жыл бұрын
@@TheProgGuy I've been on a tone chasing journey for over 40yrs, and I feel like I have finally reached my destination. I haven't been able to commit to a band, and gig out much due to the whole day job thing. Mostly jam sessions, and recording for me. When I got a T-75 cab, it immediately didn't work out for me. I felt like I had to keep cranking it, and there was a blandness. I went with V-30's for a while but they didn't fit my playing, until I mixed them with H-75's in the same cab, which to me sounds amazing for classic rock, southern rock etc... Not so much for metal IMO. All V-30's are good for metal, but can get strident with lower gain. The rig I use most has all M-25's. with a modified 2 Ch Ceriatone KK (wired '68 JCM 800/ hot 2204). This rig is versatile, but unforgiving.
@giacomoneri1782
@giacomoneri1782 6 ай бұрын
@@qua7771 The T-75 combined with the M-70 sounds pretty decent. They complement each other, the M-70 puts in those boxy lower mids and articulation the T-75 lacks, the T-75 provides the low end and the highs.
@qua7771

This is still a very useful video. I used Keith Merrow's 12 pickups in 2012 and 15 pickups in 2015 videos to pick my Seymour Duncans, and I love them. Nicely done. :-) Which speaker did you settle on for most usage, or have you added others to this? I do wish it was easier to pick out speakers from recordings, but the cabinets they're in make such a difference (along with the vintage of each and the impedance) that it's just to give you something to expect when testing stuff on your own.

Hi Johan, really glad to see this vid (i'm a metal fan) and to see you have pick up a new V30 vs the Marshall one in your comparative ;). The only thing missing is a ...simple greenback G12M, as they were used a lot ! Retro voicing : G80, CL70, G65, G50 (i didn't know this last) Modern voicing : G12T75, V30 (All), G12K100 Unique : EVM 12L A bit of history : The G65 was the first celestion large cap speaker, made in order to increase and respond to volume demand in the beginning of the 80's. G70 : the next power evolution of the G-65 G12T-75 is a reworked version of the G-65, sonically different. It's with the V30, the standard for Marshall since a while. G80 : H magnet version of the G12-65 CL80 evolution of the G80 with a fiberglass cone, used in Mesa combos, labelled and revoiced black shadow. G12K100 : next power evolution of the G80 V30 are the only one in this comp to have small caps. EVM is a large cap, high fidelity speaker and was used in the first Mark I in replacement of the original Altec-Lansing 417-8H Series II. Just my 2 cents. Cheers !

Great A/B (C,D,E...) comparison Johan, thank you! I am piecing together my "dream" 4x12 Cab and I found (2) G12H-100s that I want to X with some v30s; my only concern is finding a decent pair of v30s that are affordable and not the new(er) imports. I've never heard that setup (2 V30s + 2 H-100s) in person, but judging by how each speaker sounds separately, and their respective freq. response/tone, I think it will be a killer combo!!! Deep and powerful bottom stage from the H100s and thickened mid and vibrant highs from the v 30s. The band I play in is pretty eclectic (i.e. eccentric), so I don't really stick to one "genre" - surf, punk, blues, melodic prog, stoner metal, whatever. I want a rig that will cover all the bases, being pushed by a Bugera TriRec 100w tube head, all Tung Sol tubes. What are your thoughts on this potential beast of a cab -- or do you have any alternative ideas (other than v30s) to compliment the (2) H-100s I'm putting there? Thanks again for the great vids, and Cheers!

The 2014 V30 will do it's thing plus sound like all the others with a little treble rolled off, making it far more versatile The G12 50 was a surprise..sounds good too. I would open the video with a quick demo of each speaker, say 4 seconds each, for a quick side by side, then do some longer demos. i would still keep them to 10 seconds or so.No need to go longer really. Overall great job..thanks very much ..you are thee historical Celestion demo resource.

This video made me buy today a circa 2004 4x12 loaded with G12H-100s ... I am likely to scavenge, since room for a 4 x 12 is nigh impossible to find in the house right now. Thanks Johan!

Thanks for demoing the G12H100's. I have some from the early 90's in my 2X12 cabs currently. 8 Ohms. They actually stack up pretty nicely in this video. I like the high end. Seems all the Chinese ones sound muddy, or is that just me?

Yeah the H100 is my favourite in this bunch. And the newer speakers sounds a bit more sterile. Not all are fully broken in but even after having done so they sound less spatially rich

+Johan Segeborn Sorry I meant G12-65's in general, not just my particular year. It's actually a Marshall branded 1977. Very rare. I picked them up for $75 bucks a piece in Toronto. I was unsure about these so I confirmed with Dr. Decibel. Thanks again for taking the time to put this video together.
