one thing I appreciate about mastodon is that some of their riffs are relatively simple while others are not, but the way they combine them then is just songwriting mastery. whether that is the old stuff or their newer, love it all. I mean a song like more than i could chew is relatively heavy but has a way more melancholic vibe than the old stuff from "remission" which is more frantic crazy energy. some other songs I kinda had forgotten (shame on me) like circle of cysquatch also have incredible heavy riffs, yet I feel I never really heard or appreciated them as much. brb, gonna listen to Blood Mountain again, probably a record I did a little dirty since it was my least favorite from the "elements" records, but still the discography is obviously pretty stellar. my award would probably also go to intro from march of the fire ants, but also trainwreck is great, burning man, heck almost everything from remission, then we have the iconic blood and thunder, iron tusk, also stuff like more than I could chew is almost doom, really cool song too.

Hell yeah! I love that riff, when Scott comes in to sing. Brann hammering on the toms just gives it more depth. Awesome pick!

The song is heavy…then you get there and it gets HEAVVVVY

The Last Baron had some pretty heavy moments too, well done gentlemen

He does, "Chuggy," so well. "Blood & Thunder", got me through a seriously suicidal part of my life back in 2009, and I will never forget it.

Mastodon are the riff lords of the universe. All hail their splendor!

Every single one of their songs have masterful riffs. I find the riffs on Colony of Birchmen to be quite under appreciated. Needless to say how incredible Brann's drumming ties everything together so perfectly.

So many great riffs, but Brent is like, “yeah whatever that’s a good one too i’ll go with that”😂

Brent really nailed it, and Battle At Sea is a great example of how Brann makes a simple riff sound like pure armageddon. Love this band.

The fact that they had to leave The Czar, Aqua Dementia, Fire Ants, Last Baron, High Road (and many others) out of the list says how gifted those guys are.

I had the pleasure of meeting both of them in 2017! I attended Bill's guitar lesson! Cool dudes! Love 'em!

Mastodon are my favorite band of all time. I would agree with the majority of this list and am very glad Circle of Cysquatch and Hand of Stone are getting the respect they deserve here. Wish Aqua Dementia's second to last riff (the repeating one) made it in here over Blood and Thunder's ending riff though. the main riff of High Road is also absurdly heavy.

Always loved how incredible that endin Seabeast riff is

Love every single riff on this video. I'd love to hear them do a lead sections in harmony and no rhythm track and Troy playing a Gezzer Butler inspired type bass line because they have done everything else and done it well. Mastodon has refreshed my love for metal. They are a breath of fresh air in a fart filled elevator.

One of my favourite mastodon riffs is the opening to peace and tranquility, that song is on another level

Honestly there are so many to choose from but for me I've always seen Island as a incredibly heavy song and riff maybe because of the high energy of the song contributes to that, also maybe the wolf is loose

It’s so awesome to see Bill rocking a Line 6 Helix. I just wish I knew effects he had in that preset

The ending riff of the ATHF movie song is literally one of the best riffs I've ever heard.

When "Mother Puncher"'s verse riff came in at 3, I was like, "...so the opening riff is number 1, right?" 🤣 Good interview, I love these guys!
